It's time for the epic Demonworld series to get some professional covers.
As it is, my self-published books are doing the equivalent of going to a classy bar wearing sweat pants and a garbage bag with holes poked in it for a shirt. It's hard to get noticed and be appreciated when the "aesthetic knob" is turned all the way down. But with professional covers we could have Demonworld hopping out of the back of a limo in some kind of custom-fitted Italian suit with cameras flashing and bodyguards (also in suits) checking the crowd and looking for danger. Imagine the aura of confidence, the glamour, the allure of authority - that's what a professional cover can give to a book.
I've done a lot of research on artists who make book covers. I picked 1500 as the target goal because the most affordable covers on the market (which still look fairly dynamite) cost 250 dollars. For 1500 we could put covers on the first six Demonworld books. That means covers for the five currently available at Amazon and the sixth which I'm working on now.
I've devoted my life to storytelling, and I've devoted a significant chunk of said life to telling the story of Demonworld. I'll devote everything I get toward making Demonworld look as slick and professional as possible.
More money will mean better covers from better artists. While 1500 may be enough to get covers that look like they fit in with your standard bookshelf fare (and thus seem approachable to potential readers), it would of course be ideal to have pieces created by real artists whose work stands out.
And if I get outstanding covers and still have funds left over, I'll either have covers made for future Demonworld books or place advertisements for the current books with their shiny new covers.
Risks and challenges
I'm sure I'm being optimistic in thinking that I can get six nice covers for 1500. Prices change, difficulties happen, curve-balls get thrown... we all know how these things go.
So if something happens and 250 dollars per cover is no longer possible, I'll just move up the pricing scale and have fewer covers made for the current budget. Even having professional covers for the first three books would make the entire series more appealing to a larger audience, which in turn would make it possible for me to fund even more covers on my own. If the reward amount is a lot, I might even dump it all into one amazing cover for the first book. In short: Let's keep our expectations fluid.
Also keep in mind that the dates listed in the rewards section are estimates. I always devote everything I have to Demonworld, but there's no way to guess an artist's schedule. I'll fill any orders as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
