Own a nice bike with no kick stand? tired of leaning it against a wall? well next time, just drop it in a BikeCrib!
The BikeCrib concept was something I came up with about two years ago soon after purchasing my very first road bike! Being some what expensive, and way too pretty to leave locked up out in the garage, my new bike soon became part of the decor in the living room. Leaning against the wall one day,and then leaning against the back of the couch the next.
sound all too familiar?
Well soon after the 10th time discovering my bike had some how fallen over, I went out into my wood shop and built the first simple version of what is now the BikeCrib. While building a few others for some close friends,I figured, Hey! there may be a demand for this simple portable bike stand ! So one morning, I began to sketch out a few design concepts on an old envelope and then contacted a local patent attorney. While waiting for the patent to be filed,I got busy on improving the existing prototype into more than just a convenient device to keep a bike safe and upright. I would later design and incorporate a compartment at the back of the body as a place to keep bike tools and CO2 cartridges organized. As you can see in my video presentation, I have also built prototypes for both mountain bikes and children's bikes and plan to move forward on the production of both of these in the near future.
In early 2012, I began working with an industrial designer who is very experienced with the process of Injection moulding. We discussed both practical and ascetic design innovations as well as the different types of plastics best suited for this kind of product. It was very exciting for me later to have the finalized computer images 3-d laser printed into two solid functioning proto-types.(both are featured in the video presentation) One for a road bike and the other for a mountain bike. Now with the patent secured (as of 10/24/12) I am now ready to move into the next and most expensive phase of my project,,,injection molding. The BikeCrib will consist of two injection molded plastic parts, the body, and the tool kit door. The initial start up expense of building two molding tools for the production of the BikeCrib is what I will be raising the funds for. I hope to see my product available in the early summer of 2013!

Here's the latest updates on the BikeCrib!
The U.S patent was awarded to me back on October the 24th 2012, and before the end of the year I completed and tested the final prototype design.
I have also researched and contacted a few California based injection molding companies and discussed possible future contracts in the manufacturing of this design. The next step after that will be to manufacture the included mesh tool bag that will be attached to the inside of the door. I've recently contacted a local utility bag making company here in Los Angeles and they are very interested, but will need to see some solid demand numbers before getting started. I'm hoping over the next month and with a lot of backer support that number will become very apparent. Next on my list will be assembly and packaging and once again, based on my backer support, I have two companies both interested as soon as I need them.
As a television production director by profession, I'm quite used to the day to day pressures of having multiple important aspects of a project happening simultaneously.
Just get this far has been a very exciting experience for me and I now look forward to the many challenges that lie ahead in bringing this product to market.
