iPhone, IMAX, iWhatever. Shooting compelling video is more about the craft than it is about the camera.
We can make history (look and sound better).
Think of the images from 9/ll, Arab Spring, the Boston Marathon. Precious few of the people shooting video at the scenes of those events—bystanders or demonstrators— knew what they were doing with their cameras. But these images are lodged in the collective memory of our time. We deserve better.
VIDEO RULES will transform our videoscape by being a trusty guide for anyone with a camera in their pocket or purse – and, these days, that includes just about everybody. The book offers a different approach to looking at the world by demonstrating how to listen with a camera.
About that power in your pocket
New communication devices appear so often and proliferate so quickly that the task of understanding and mastering them challenges even the most media-savvy of us.
The convergence of the iPhone, iPad, YouTube and the internet is an imperfect storm, simultaneously launching us into uncharted futures while returning us to our tribal past—where we’re all artists, storytellers or performers. We have a new language to learn, one so powerful and universal that, for the first time in history, we can become intimately connected with anyone on the planet.
So if we want to take control of the videoscape before it takes control of us, we'd better learn how to speak—and, more importantly, listen—with a camera.
"Three years ago, 17% of internet traffic was video. Today it's 50%. In three years...we predict over 90% of internet content will be video." —David Hsieh, VP for Emerging Technologies, Cisco Systems
My book, VIDEO RULES, distills forty years of know-how—shooting news, documentaries, sports, business and entertainment—into a set of six basic principles: The Laws of Camerawork.
I illustrate not only how to shoot—in any situation—but, more importantly, how to think about how to shoot.
Whether you're a working professional, an aspiring filmmaker or the home/office paparazzi, the power of the medium—to inform, entertain, inspire—flows not from the camera but from the craft: fine-tuning a viewer's perceptions. So if you think of the camera not only as a microphone for your brain but also as the viewer's brain, you're ahead of the game.
I love to shoot. I've loved it so much and for so long that I want everybody to know how it feels to touch—even electrify—a viewer with compelling images and sound.
My intention for the book is the most ambitious I've ever imagined for a project: I want everyone who carries an iPhone or an iPad to have a copy of VIDEO RULES—the keys for unlocking the power of that wondrous toolset in their pocket or purse.
The 188 page book is written. The design and layout, awaiting a final round of minor corrections, are done. Next step: publish and distribute.
I need a team of backers who like to think Big. You'll be rewarded—with cool stuff – and with the knowledge that our teamwork will help make the planet's videoscape a realm of beauty, inspiration and clarity.
"Most of us could communicate better, articulate more clearly and understand more deeply if we knew the basic grammar, syntax and logic of video. What Dave Lent presents here is a straight and simple path to video literacy and, with lots of practice, video mastery."—David Marash, award-winning correspondent, ABC's Nightline

About the Rewards...
LIFE WITHOUT...Inside San Quentin
(The 58 minute film will stream for 30 days on a private YouTube channel for backers who pledge $10 or more)
Our cameras were the first to be permitted inside the walls America's most notorious and, in the fall of 1974, most violent prison—San Quentin. With unlimited access to the "Adjustment" Center, Death Row, cellblocks, exercise yards and guard towers, I was part of a team who co-produced and filmed the critically-acclaimed (and heavily-censored) PBS documentary INSIDE SAN QUENTIN, broadcast by WGBH Boston in 1979. LIFE WITHOUT is my version. I made it not only for the prisoners who shared—unflinchingly—the most intimate details of their broken lives, but also to honor the prisoner who died from a stab wound in front of my lens. Because the men of San Quentin didn't censor themselves for my camera, I felt compelled to make a film that would not look away from their ugly, disturbing, poetic truths.—DL

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Bring 'em on! While book printing and Kickstarter Rewards fulfillment are uncharted territory for me, I learned valuable lessons from the distributors of my documentary THE 5 KEYS TO MASTERY and my line of production accessories, most notably the SteadyBag. One lesson I learned over and over again is that things take as long as they take, and usually longer than anticipated. So to be prepared for unexpected delays, I've set printing and fulfillment deadlines where I can expect to meet them with confidence.
