About

Official poster of the project!
Official poster of the project!

The idea came after watching Rogue One, I loved the film so much, but was so frustrated to not have seen more of Vader... Especially after a certain scene that blew everybody's minds!

I never wanted to shoot any Star Wars fan films, I always felt that to shoot something credible from that universe I'd need a lot of money, costumes are expensive, cgi are expensive and time consuming, if the film involves any fight scenes you need to take time preparing the choreographies etc etc... But after watching Rogue One I couldn't help it,  it was growing on me, so I thought that I'd shoot just a teaser, just a simple and very short teaser, something less consuming than a full fan film, a teaser showing what a Darth Vader movie could look like if tomorow Lucasfilm was releasing a "Darth Vader a Star Wars story" movie. My teaser is centered right after Revenge of the Sith, in a period of time where Vader was the most vulnerable in my opinion, dealing with the recent traumas of losing his wife and body. I spent all January 2017 working on it, thinking I could shoot it with a small crew, quickly (on Feb 11th) and release it out of the blue on the internet. A professional make up artist (Melanie Rathelot) started working on Vader's scars, I asked around who could help with the equipment (for free) etc...The thing is, days flew by and I quickly realized that, if I wanted to make it right, a Star Wars fan film was far more demanding, time and money consuming than anything I ever shot! Then the main person that was supposed to help me during the shoot with the equipment felt sick, the shoot was getting closer, I had spent a lot of money, the sets were not finished, reality caught up... Feeling very frustrated and disappointed I had no choice but to push back the shoot... I then made a poster (the one on this page), edited a teaser (also on this page) made of 80% of sounds (since obviously I have no footage yet) and ended up here, on Kickstarter! To make it right!

Our goal!

But now, can I come here and ask for money to shoot a teaser? JUST a teaser? That seems a little weak... So my plan is to shoot a trailer that will contain some exclusive shots + a short fan film centered on Vader. make something as credible as possible, renting a screen accurate Vader suit, some suits of other new characters will be created, we have a professional pyrotechnist artist already on board for one of the main scene involving a lot of fire at night, we plan to shoot it on professional equipment, the goal is to release a teaser that will hopefully give people the feeling they would get if tomorow Lucasfilm was making a Darth Vader movie and was releasing a teaser for it.

How are we going to use the money?

Rent of the Darth Vader suit for the weekend $300 (283€)

Give a little remuneration to three persons that will help carrying the equipment around and set up the lights (night shoots involve a lot of heavy lamps especially for what I have in mind) $350 (331€)

Craft service including a small remuneration to the people that will feed our actors during these long hours (especially the ones at night) $110 (104€)

Props and costumes $550 (520€)

Equipment $550 (520€)

Hire a CGI artist (knowing that with this, he'll still be way underpaid) $500 (473€)

Sound Mix $150 (141€)

Make up $150 (141€)

$250 (236€) to help finish one of the sets.

Extra money $150 (141€) (we never know, film shoots are full of surprises).

+ Kickstarter's percentage

NOW, one can dream, but if this campaign would go beyond what we're asking, that would mean better costumes, better CGI and extras (more shots on Coruscant, Mustafar?), better film sets, better equipment (with more money we could shoot on a better camera, using better lenses, hell can you imagine if we could shoot anamorphic?! ... or shoot it on Film...), it would also mean a scene with more stormtroopers! More production value!

Some of the crew! So far...

So I thought I'd talk about the other people working on this first, but since I'll be the one directing all this, I guess it could be useful and spare you some time to first hear about me and what I do, so as said in the "About You" section, I'm a French filmmaker, I've never went to any film schools, I've learnt all I know practicing, making short films, meeting other artists and watching movies, here's below the teaser for my latest short-film (The Monster) and my director's reel, you can also see more of my work on my website at www.damienkazan.com

Teaser of The Monster :

My Director's Reel :

Ben Phillip, a friend of mines who is 6ft3 (1m92cm) and has been working out and lifting weights his whole life, he will wear the Darth Vader suit, I know Vader is about 6'7.5" (2m02), but with the boots, helmet and maybe the help of some height increase insoles, I know he'll absolutely pull off the costume.

Pierre Santino, is another actor, he's also our main pirotechnist artist, I can't tell you what role he'll play to not spoil our project (an original character) but you can already tell how charismatic he is on these pictures that I took of him!

Anthony Sevins is a talented actor and voice impersonator who will record some lines of famous characters (as the ones of the Emperor from the teaser!) Check out how talented he is in the Youtube video below! :

Tatiana ViséeTatiana is a talented young actress with whom I've worked before, to me she has that "Star Wars woman" vibe, look at this picture of her, there's something very Skywalker-ish to her. She perfectly fits in next to the real women of Star Wars (look at the comparison below)

Melanie Rathelot is our professional make up artist! She's been working on film sets for years and specialized into S.F.X, here's her website if you'd like to see more of her work.

Mathieu Laparade and Matteo Kazan These two kids, are my two little brothers in real life, I've done a bunch of short films with them, and they'll also appear in it, two young teenagers lost in a tormented galaxy.

Oh and Bonus, here are some Star Wars tributes/trailers I put together (also available on Vimeo and my website www.damienkazan.com  :

Risks and challenges

This is obviously a risky project, we're dealing with Star Wars! If something's not credible, if a costume is not right there's an army of fan right around the corner ready to point it out, but this is why I'm here typing these words, because I want to make it right...

Then besides this, we have the usual risks of all film shoots, what if someone cancels, what if something goes wrong on set (hey Episode IV and I had their entire Tatooine sets destroyed by storms...) but I've made a lot of short-films, some with bigger crews, some with smallers, I've had all kind of problems on them (broken noses, broken ankles, unwanted rain, armed cops arriving in the middle of a gun fight scene with blank bullets etc etc) and I've always managed to get all my shots by the end of the day and complete my films. To not complete a film is one of my worst nightmares, and I fight everytime for this not to happen. But let's not even think about this, let's make it happen and have faith that everything will run smoothly and release that trailer and short film around May/June!
