About

There are plenty of good board games based on violent means to accomplish a goal: killing monsters to capture a castle, eliminating opponents to win a game.  Now, 55-65 years after the nonviolent protests of Montgomery, Greensboro, Nashville and scores of other cities across the United States, isn't it time we had some board games where players compete for goals using nonviolent methods?

Well, at SG Publishing, this is our first one, Lunchcounter Outcasts: the game of Nonviolent Campaigns, Undeserved Names, and Dazzling, Diner Entrées.  The game was designed by me, Jim Highland, and I also did the game graphics, except for the four character images, which were done by illustrator Artem Shukayev.

Most folks know that John Lewis, Diane Nash, Rev./Dr. King and so many others had a dream, a vision, for a better world of human relations.  Few people understand the methods they used and how they were meant to work with negotiations to draw people toward that dream.

In Lunchcounter Outcasts, players experience some of the strategy, excitement, and frustrations of coupling nonviolent protests with negotiations to overturn unjust laws.  They do so using deck-building (collecting cards), resource management, engine-building (cards that help you get more cards) and dice-rolling.

I know, I know; you're bad at rolling dice.  Don't worry.  Various game elements help you alter your dice rolls to achieve the goals of overturning unjust laws, and earning the points needed to win the game.

Check out the video below for an explanation of Game Play in Lunchcounter Outcasts:

This project came about as several aspects of my life came together.  I've worked as everything from a pizza delivery guy to a university professor; I've sold real estate and sliced meat and cheese at the local deli.  But I've always admired how ordinary, working people found the time and energy for nonviolent campaigns that were dangerous, but so important in the struggle for a better world.

While game elements parallel insights and methods of the US Civil Rights Movement, you do not need to be an expert in the Movement to play.  For instance, the five Breakfast card suites each represent a criterion Dr. King articulated regarding Unjust laws: Arrows: a law or practice the gives one group a false sense of superiority and another group a false sense of inferiority; Scales: a law or practice that goes against a person's conscience, morality, or the a law of God; Ballots: a law or practice that effectively denies certain people the opportunity to vote; Boots: a law or practice that puts down or burdens one group of people; and Traffic Lights: a law or practice that, on it's face, is Just, but is applied in an unjust manner, and so, is effectively Unjust.  Great insights, but you can just look at the card images and match them to what each Lunch card requires.  The game instructions have more explanations of how game elements parallel aspects of nonviolent campaigns, if you decide to find out more about it.

As a kid, growing up in Western PA (USA), I was always playing or making games: board games, card games, role-playing games, you name it.  Most were competitive and involved the theme of using force to win.  But as an adult, I wondered: how could a board game based on Nonviolent Campaigns be fun, strategic and competitive?  Well, after about two years; this is my first result.

The game has been playtested and demo-ed over the last 8 months in Western and Central Pennsylvania.  Thanks to everyone who has helped; especially: Games Unlimited (Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA), Six Feet Under Games (New Holland, PA), Tabletop Con (Sharon, PA), Bell's Comics and Cards Board Game Group (Grove City, PA), Save Against Fear Tabletop Gaming Convention (Harrisburg, PA), The Gaming Association of Southwestern PA (GASP), Pittsburgh Eurogames, Western PA Gaming, members of The Community of Reconciliation Church (Pittsburgh, PA) and other friends and family who have helped support and make the game what it is today.  More Demos are being scheduled in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, North Carolina and other places during the Kickstarter Campaign.

I want to be able to sell the game to folks everywhere who want a taste of the strategy and frustrations of using nonviolent protests and negotiations, coupled with the fun of a competitive board game.  To do that, I need your help with start up funds to get games produced to be sold wherever I can sell them.

In addition to offering copies of the game as incentive gifts, we are offering game-themed lyrics to 1950's songs, and game-themed T-Shirts, Engraved Root Beer Mugs, and Engraved Milkshake Glasses.

Risks and challenges

This is my first Kickstarter (the video is the best I can do on my budget; if I had more funds for a professional video, I wouldn't need your help on Kickstarter); but while I hope to do more down the road, I'm putting all of my time and energy into this one now. I've set a goal that will allow me to get some games made in bulk, taking advantage of lower, bulk pricing for game components that I will need to have made. Other components will be made with the help of a local printing company where I work. If you help me meet my pledge goal, I will be able to make and start selling games this year.

My experience with printers and artists has helped me move this project forward over the last two years, gaining advice on materials, ink colors, and the manufacturing and shipping process. My years selling real estate have given me practice in how to market and sell to customers. Also, my years of teaching have given me a solid understanding of the history and philosophy of the civil rights movement, so that I have been able to match various game elements to the methods of nonviolent campaigns.

Most importantly, I love playing board games, and have since I was a kid. I play in a number of groups in the Western PA area, and enjoy the friendship and good-natured fun that goes on when a group of people play games in which most of them will lose, but they love it anyway. It's always fun to joke about the jerk who won the game, isn't it?

It's been a lot of work already; play-testing the game in Central and Western PA, with friends and at various game stores, conventions, and gaming groups. But it's helped the game elements improve and evolve to where I'm ready to publish it for a wider group of people than I can with my current resources. I have set up a variety of incentive gifts and hope you will support this project at whatever level works best for you. Thanks!
