FreeSpace Tactics is a fast-paced miniatures game of space combat for 2-4 players set in the war-torn FreeSpace universe. Inspired by the intense dogfights of the FreeSpace video games, we have been testing and refining the gameplay of FreeSpace Tactics for more than a year to create a tactical and highly customizable experience beyond the traditional miniatures game.

FreeSpace is the classic series of space combat simulations first published by Interplay Entertainment Corp. in 1998. In the FreeSpace video games, players man the cockpits of fighters and bombers as pilots in the Great War between the human Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) and the Vasudans, an alien race. The appearance of the Shivans, a third, previously unknown, alien race upsets the balance of the GTA-Vasudan conflict, forcing old enemies to unite in the face of a common threat.
FreeSpace Tactics is an officially licensed miniatures game of competitive, ship-to-ship combat for 2-4 players set before the arrival of the Shivans, during the last days of the Great War.
Played on a 3’ by 3’ tabletop, players use decks of move cards to maneuver their ships, launch attacks, and avoid deadly collisions. Each of FreeSpace Tactic's six scenarios comes with set-up instructions, special rules, and victory conditions for a variety of game styles.
To begin, each player selects at least one ship and collects the corresponding move cards. But, rather than being limited to ships' base abilities, players also select pilots, granting them powerful Ace cards with unique abilities to be added to their decks of move cards.
Move cards add a new layer of strategy beyond typical miniatures warfare. At the start of each turn, players secretly pick one move card from their hands for each ship they are piloting, but key to outwitting your opponent is that each card has an initiative number. As players reveal their cards according to initiative, they utilize their cards' abilities to move their ships and attack any enemies within line of sight and range.
Of course, what would combat be without dice? Not only are dice rolled for damage to shields and hulls, including bonuses for hitting a ship's rear arc, but Ace cards and missile attacks can cause critical hits for special effects, including wounded pilots and jarring blows that remove cards from an opponent's deck.
Please note that components shown are prototypes. We have professional artists creating the final art, including 3-D renders of the ship miniatures, and we have a solid sense of the graphic design we are trying to achieve.
Would you like to know more? We will release the beta rulebook shortly. In the meantime, backers can ask questions in the comment section.
Pilot and Ace Pilot pledges include one copy of the FreeSpace Tactics Core Box.
This box is your entry into an entire hobby and comes with enough components for a 2-4 player game:
4 colored plastic ship miniatures
80 movement cards (1 5/8” x 2 ½”)
24 core move cards and 16 ace cards per faction
12 pilot cards (2 ½” x 3 ½”)
6 asteroid tiles
2 range rulers
Dice (6d6, 4d8, 2d10 and one missile die)
Damage, critical hit, shield and missile markers
The ship miniatures are provided unpainted, but different colored plastics will be used for each faction. Each mini comes with a flight stand and base that indicates the firing and movement arcs. To make painting and storage easier, the ships are removable from the flight stands.
The minis are scaled to each other (~1:540) and are around 2" in length (some ships are smaller and some are larger).
As we unlock certain stretch goals, we will produce new ships and increase the size of the FreeSpace Tactics universe!
We made prototypes of several different games and, while we enjoy FreeSpace Tactics the most, we also made a really fun card game, that we will detail in an upcoming update. Each backer will get print-and-play digital files for the card game shortly after the campaign concludes. We have other digital rewards planned as well.
We have big plans for FreeSpace Tactics, but they can't happen without your help. Once we fund, we would like to improve the core set and create expansions.
The first stretch goal adds one exclusive pilot per ship type to the Ace Pilot reward pack.
The second stretch goal unlocks the Bombers add-on, with one Athena and Osiris miniature, plus cards and markers.
The next stretch goal adds two exclusive ace cards per ship to the Ace Pilot reward pack.
The fourth stretch goal unlocks the Heavies ship add-on. Two more miniatures, one Medusa and one Seth, plus cards and markers.
More stretch goals are waiting to be unlocked!
All backers at the Ace Pilot level will receive exclusive pilot and ace cards with alternate art, showcasing your allegiance to FreeSpace Tactics. Future stretch goals may include other exclusives that will only be available in print by backing this campaign or by getting them directly from us at events (while supplies last). Most exclusives will be available in digital form at a later date.
Want more space combat goodness? In addition to any miniatures unlocked for purchase through stretch goals, you can choose add-ons from the list below. Just increase your base pledge to cover the cost. You can tell us what add-ons you selected after the campaign closes.
The asteroid pack adds six plastic asteroids with stands, plus a scenario book.
Like rolling big handfuls of dice? The dice pack adds a duplicate set of dice from the core set: Six d6s, four d8s, two d10s and one missile die.

Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter project, but not the first published board game for designer Chris Taylor. Collectively we have backed over a hundred games and know what we would like to see from a successful Kickstarter project.
Even though the core game rules are finished, we are still making tweaks. We need to balance ships, pilot abilities and ace cards, but we have a play testing plan in place to handle that.
We will be dealing with plastic miniatures. There are challenges associated with creating the molds. We plan on working with a company to help assist us with the miniatures.
There may be unexpected production and shipping delays. We can't guarantee we won't run into anything unexpected (otherwise, we could expect it and make contingency plans), but we do promise to keep you updated. To the extent possible, we will try to ship international packages at the start of the shipping process due to the longer transit times for those rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
