On December 12, 2011, Captain Jim Peterson, leader of the legendary Tuna Guys, lost his life when his boat capsized off the coast of Oregon while fishing for crab.
With this art project, the Tuna Guy family wishes to create a memorial to our Captain, who gave so much of himself to us and the Burningman community, at which all those who have benefited by his generosity may express their sorrow over this loss and have a place to sit and contemplate how such a loss affects so many in the Burningman family while surrounded by the sounds and sights of the Playa.
If you know the Tuna Guys or have ever encountered the Tuna Guys on the Playa, partied with us or gorged yourself silly on fresh Pacific Tuna, then here's your chance to help us thank Jim for making it all happen for all those years. If you've enjoyed the company of those who Jim brought together or the "serenity" of Tuna Guys encampment or tore it up at the legendary Tuna Guys Monday Night Party or eaten your fill or had cocktails with us... NOW is the time to say "Thanks" to Cap'n Jim and his crew by making a donation and helping us build this fine tribute to him.
This project means everything to us as so many members of the Tuna Guy family are spread around the country and are unable to gather in one spot to mourn the loss of the Captain. BMORG said this; " The Tuna Guys are an iconic playa legend, part of the fabric of Black Rock City, and an enduring icon of Gifting at its best" in the Jackrabbit Speaks. We feel that it is only fitting that there is a place at Burningman 2012 specifically dedicated to the Captain for our friends and family to feel that they can pay final respects to a Burningman Icon.
We plan to build a boat in the desert, 30' long and 15' wide. The boat will be made from raw pine, recycled beetle kill and unpainted. As the boat burns away and collapses, a "surprise" will be unveiled as an impressive tribute to our lost Captain.
Our art project will serve as a "chill spot" and a place to sit and relax on the Playa during the event.Bring your markers and leave a message to the Tuna Guys and Cap'n Jim.
Tuna Guys "Think Big", so the better the donations, the better a show we can put on for all our friends at Burningman, so keep those donations coming even if we hit our goal. We promise not to disappoint.
All Donors get an invitation to the Monday Night Potluck Party at Tuna Camp (if we have one). Party with us til we get tired of you and send you home. A unique experience in hospitality not to be missed. All donors also get a "Thank You" card signed by real Tuna Guys and sent in the Mail from Gerlach (if they have a Post Office) or maybe from somewhere else....
