Mortalaxy is a turn based tactical RPG with exploring and crafting mechanics. The game explores physical, mental and social elements of wellbeing and how they interact through its unique story and gameplay.
In 2014, my game concept (originally called 'Planet Nutria’) was shortlisted to compete in the Games for Change Europe Awards. Only nine teams were shortlisted from 96 teams around the world (13 countries). Although I didn’t end up winning, that didn’t stop me from making my concept a reality.
What is a Mortalaxy?
Basically, it’s a metaphorical galaxy that represents wellbeing. The ‘Mortalaxy’ consists of three planets representing the three core pillars of wellbeing (physical, mental, and social). The first game I wish to develop (Mortalaxy Green) takes place on planet Nutrion, which represents physical wellbeing. The eventual goal is to develop a trilogy of games. The trilogy would explore the planets and the conflict between each of their factions (the next game would be Mortalaxy Blue, then Mortalaxy Red).
What is a Mortaling?
A Mortaling is a being that exists in a Mortalaxy. Each Mortaling personifies something from reality (could be an object, or even a theory). On planet Nutrion, most Mortalings personify food. Mortalings have unique powers based on what they personify. For example Alex the Apple Mortaling has powers such as Vitamin C Comet and Fibre Force Field.
Mortalaxy Green (Game 1) Story Outline
The main story follows the journey of Alex (Apple Mortaling) and his Natural Allies. Harnessing the power of vitamins (magic) and minerals (weapons), they set out to reclaim the world of Nutrion from the Artificial Faction of Waldon’s World.
There are three main mechanics to the game; exploration, cooking and battle.
Whilst exploring you can meet and recruit new party members, buy food and create meals. In the full game, characters from your party can also use their powers to solve puzzles and uncover hidden paths and secrets.
Similar to Minecraft’s crafting mechanic, you can create meals using the food you collect or buy while exploring. Meals are much more effective at restoring health and energy during battle. In the full game, some meals may also provide unique buffs or power up certain abilities during battle.
The game features a grid based and turn based battle system similar to RPGs like Fire Emblem. Unlike most RPG battle systems, each character can move, attack and use items each turn, making battles much more dynamic.
For most powers, the enemy simply has to be in range to execute it. However there are many other powers each character can unlock which can support and/or combo with other ally powers.
In the full game you can level up and upgrade party members with new powers and unlock Ultimate Powers using Skill Trees unique to each character.
For the demo and the Kickstarter trailer, I decided to use Royalty Free Music from PeriTune - http://peritune.com/. This was mainly due to time constraints. For the full game however, me and my brother will create the soundtrack ourselves. Below is a playlist of original tracks we have created already, and the type of music you should expect to hear in the final game.
I am the creator of Mortalaxy! I am responsible for pretty much everything besides background art and most of the music. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Games and Interactive Entertainment and worked in the e Learning industry for many years.
I have a particular interest in creating stories with scientific themes. This is because I personally believe science has a lot more excitement and wonder than myths or fairy tales. Ultimately I want to create games that have a positive influence on culture, and make the world a better place!
Cody is my twin brother! He is also professional illustrator and animator with a passion for drawing and storytelling. He also enjoys creating music and playing video games. Cody graduated from Griffith University with an honours degree in Animation. He has illustrated for three published children’s books. Cody will mainly help me with background art and music.

Enemy and NPC Design
Design both a Good Bacterian villager NPC and a Bad Bactrian enemy that players will battle against throughout the game! [LIMITED 5]

Because I will be the sole developer of this game, I will need two years to develop the game I envision, with my brother helping me part-time. The money raised will mostly go towards keeping a roof over my head whilst I develop the game for the next two years.
Below is a breakdown on what the money will be spent on.
If the project is over-funded, my brother and potentially others can help me full time. Having the extra help will give me extra time to add additional features and content to the game.
Risks and challenges
I am relatively new to game development, so it is understandable to question my ability to publish a full RPG game. However, that is why I set aside the past year of my life to program the core mechanics of the game and develop a playable demo.
