About this project
If you've ever been on the brink and had the thought: If I could just marry my best friend and move to a deserted island, life would be SO MUCH easier ... This project is for you!
Can’t/Won’t is the story of two young women (April and Cooper) with such a casual intimacy and love that they teeter on the brink of romance and co-dependence. After finding out that Cooper (Annapurna Sriram) is leaving for the summer, April (Clea DeCrane) realizes she doesn't just love her best friend... She needs her. She's lost without her - and has invested so much into their relationship over the last few years that along the way, she might have cut off other blossoming relationships. And so, on the night of Cooper's surprise birthday party, we watch these best friends face what their particular kind of love means to each of them - and how that will affect their future.
Because we’re new filmmakers, we wanted to hire and surround ourselves with an experienced and professional cast and crew. By hiring an experienced Director of Photography, G&E team, line producers, and actors, we're ensuring that our 8 minute short is made with integrity and real craft so that we stay true to our artistic vision.
Our 12K budget covers pre-production costs and 3 full days of shooting. With equipment rentals, locations and permits, a full cast and crew (all being compensated, fed, and taken care of by Union rules), we know we're setting our sights high! But we wouldn't want to do it any other way. It's incredibly important to us as a team that we compensate our fellow artists for their time and effort. We're hoping to some day support ourselves solely as working artists and we want to help everyone in our field come closer to this dream as well.
Why this film?
A decade ago, we wouldn’t be making this film. Not because we couldn’t, but because we might not have thought it was a story people would find worth telling. But following in the footsteps of our idols like Ilana and Abbi of Broad City, Jill Soloway and the team of Transparent, Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner of Girls, Jenji Kohan and the team of Orange is the New Black … we know there’s an audience out there who appreciates complex and wildly contradictory female characters and want to get to know them and hear their stories. We've got an entirely female writer/director/producer team on this short, and hugely diverse cast AND crew - which we believe only aids us to make a piece that will resonate with audiences on a universal level.
Our film will leave you with the question: who is the person I look for at the end of the night? And what do I really want from the friends and relationships in my life?
THANK YOU so much for supporting this project. If you've even made it this far, THANK YOU! We need all the support we can get - and that doesn't just mean financially. If anything about Can't/Won't speaks to you, feel free to share this video or reach out to us. We'd love nothing more than to connect with you.
We CAN'T/WON'T do this without you.

Risks and challenges
Producing your own work is never easy. As young filmmakers, we're learning quickly just how much effort, love, and critical thinking goes into the pre-production process. As we finalize our script, cast and crew, locations, etc ... we understand just how much is ever-changing, and that the real skill comes into play when inevitable changes and challenges happen leading up and during filming.
It is a must to be adaptable and creative on set, and we trust our incredible core team of players on this project to do just that. We know there will be unforeseeable last minute shifts, (i.e. weather, location, equipment) but we're doing the work now to have our people and budget in place to handle these issues with grace.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
