They laughed when Flutter picked up an iPad, but
when they saw him type….
Just kidding, horses can’t really type but they can
inspire imagination. Ever since I
was a little girl, I dreamed of magic horses, bright colors, wonder, and a
world filled full of incredible stories brought to life. All that and having my very own Pegasus. :-)
I got pretty close to a Pegasus with my colt,
Flutter. I think you’ll see what I mean.
Welcome to Flutter’s World! He rolls
balls, jumps tall logs in a single bound, does horse yoga with limited props,
hides behind trees (not well though), and attempts to outrun anything on four
legs or two. I love writing about his other
worldly adventures. He loves being
a star and hanging out with his best friend, Image.
This is Flutter at 3 days old. He was a funny guy even then!
After writing my first book, Magic Hoof School,
children kept asking me when it would be on the iPad. That got me thinking…
What If Kids Could Take My Stories And Be The Authors Themselves? How About A New Way Of Storytelling?
In a dream, my little black colt,
Flutter, galloped into my mind and told me the secret. He said to put the stories on an iPad App and let
kids transform any page they want, at any time they want. Give them the power to make the story
This Brings Me To Flutterbooks
Flutterbooks is all about freedom! Yes, freedom for children to change a book's storyline and become the author. Flutterbooks was born.
What Can Kids Do With Flutterbooks?
Kids can easily decide to change the direction of the story by changing a page (or many pages). The child will become the new author! Here’s what I want children to be able to do with any Flutterbooks story:
- Spin-off existing stories or create new adventures
- Add or delete characters and text
- Change backgrounds
- Move characters around
- Add anybody’s voice and text
- And (the best part) change the character’s face to show feelings!
Oh I forgot! You can share your story too.

Did I Start Flutterbooks?
When I was a second grade teacher, I was always
looking for ways to cultivate my students’ creativity. I discovered that my
stories were a writing springboard which got creative juices going and motivated
students to write. Students loved being able to use my text and characters to add
to their own creations. This way there was never a blank page staring at them
or a ‘what did you do over the summer break’ writing prompt. I found a co-creative
approach to be the best way for children to discover their own voices.
Forward to Today!
I came to Kickstarter and to all of you, because I need backers like you to help us with the cost of programming Flutterbooks. Together, we can make Flutterbooks a reality. I’ve
worked a year on the stories, artwork, and creating a demo. The programming is
expensive and we need $8,000 to do it. With your backing, Flutter will be leaping
across your iPad in no time.
In It For You?
Excellent question. Various reward options are available for different pledge amounts. Check out the right hand column for more information on the rewards available to you. You'll notice we have a special theme for every pledge level. There is one just waiting for you!

Are You New to Kickstarter?
If you're not familiar with Kickstarter and how it
works, here's a quick overview (or you can read the official
one, here). For the next 30 days, you'll be able to make pledges to help
support Flutterbooks, ranging from $9 to whatever you can afford. For your
pledge, you can select one of the reward packages—listed to the right. You can
always pledge more than the minimum to get the reward you want. Your credit
card or other account will not actually be charged at the time you make your
When the final deadline comes and we've reached our
goal, then everyone gets charged the amount they pledged at once, we get to work immediately mailing the rewards and the programmer will start coding Flutterbooks. Since the programming of the Flutterbooks App won't be complete until July, you will get your App reward then. If for some off reason we don't meet our goal, then the
whole thing is called off (Flutter would be sad). No one gets charged, no fees are applied,
everyone just keeps their money. So there's no risk to you to make a pledge. But remember, if we fail to meet the goal, then no one gets their rewards either. Which would be sad, because some of those rewards are pretty Flutterific, in my and Flutter's highly biased opinions.
