So....20 years ago I was fortunate enough to be asked to write something for the annual Passendale Peace Concert, about my grandfathers, who had both endured the carnage of the third battle of Ypres, the Passendale campaign of 1917. The resulting song suite "Gentle Men" was very well received, & something of a "personal best" in terms of my achievements as a songwriter. I think I had always afterwards considered writing something similar about my father's generation, the generation that grew up in the poverty & exhaustion of 30s Britain, that fought not only against fascism, but also to transform society with the Welfare State. But I was never sure where or when to make a start. Then in February, I found myself unexpectedly in Grove Park, Chiswick, opposite the school where my dad had worked as teacher. i started planning out songs on the train afterwards, & then later, in Paris in April, I suddenly started writing, & the writing immediately started both to gather momentum & all sorts of unexpected possibilities. Initially i wanted to get the album out to provide a voice in the run-up to the next general election in 2020. Then Mrs May suddenly announced that the next election was going to be in June....
Now the album is going to be coming out next year, the centenary of the Armistice & the 70th birthday of the NHS.
& this is where your sponsorship becomes very important! With this Kickstarter i am trying to raise the money to record these songs with as much care & attention & creativity as i can, because ... well, i think these songs deserve that, & certainly the generation that built the Welfare State deserve our thanks & respect. There will very likely be a later campaign to fund the manufacture of the CD too, & any money raised over the target will certainly help with further developments.
Plus it is an opportunity to produce Words & Chords 2 - a second songbook, & it will be very good to have your perspectives on which songs ought to be included, & your reasons why.
Enough for now. Thanks for reading this & hope you feel able to pledge towards this project.
