This Kickstarter project is to fund the double CD release of a solo live performance, voice, guitar + spoken word, of my song suite about my grandfathers and the first world war, Gentle Men. Gentle Men was originally a commission for the 1997 Passendale Peace Concert - both my grandads endured that particularly appalling and pointless slaughter - and was recorded with the performance cast of English & Belgian musicians. The double CD actually sold, & time passed, & in performances later in England the song suite grew new songs, & then in 2003 of course we embarked upon another pointless military adventure. I was lucky enough to be able to record a new revised version in 2013 - Roy Bailey again sang both grandfathers songs, and Barb Jungr was the female voice. It's a beautiful work. It has led to more performances, some with Roy, & some with John Forrester & Jenny Carr, and some solo performances too. All these versions also have spoken word narration between songs, linking songs but also providing historical context. In May this year, Roy & I were supposed to perform this in Wigan Parish Church. Unfortunately, Roy couldn't make it. Ian Cleverdon, the sound engineer, recorded the concert & both he & David Cartlidge, the concert promoter, thought the performance and the recording were worthy of releasing as a CD. People who had attended both the full cast CD launch & this concert also thought that this complements the original CD, & that being a solo performance, me singing about my grandfthaerrs & telling their stories, added to the intensity of the evening.

So - we're releasing it - official release date will be close to November 11th, 2015, to remind people it wasn't all over by Christmas...

Risks and challenges

the obvious risk is, with no extra rewards, i won't get enough money! but i sort of worked out that 70 people helped fund the last Kickstarter project - & I think everyone was happy with that - so i hope they might be kind enough to support this one too,,,
