My new EP is titled We Know How This Thing Ends. It will be 6 original songs (possibly more depending how all this goes). If you got my last record, Unfettered, this is in many ways like "Unfettered 1.5," meaning it's honestly a very natural next step after what I explored with those songs. I'm still thinking a lot about death and suffering and "hard things," and I'm still finding hope and deep meaning in it all. In particular, most of the songs on this project were written just before and just after a good friend of mine died of leukemia. It was hard and confusing watching him and his young family suffer, but God taught me (and is still teaching me) a lot through it. So I wrote some songs. These are them.
Here's the deal on the budget. In the past, I've always kind of "under asked" in my campaigns (a combination of my own insecurity, pride, and just being really bad at details and math), but this time I've decided -- based upon the prompting of several fans and friends -- to ask for more. I want to over-pay everyone, and in addition, I want to use some money to create promo/marketing pieces as well. I'll start with some high-quality lyric videos, then maybe move on to some advertising stuff, some free concerts, etc... I'd love to reach more people with my music but that's extremely difficult without spending money. This increased budget will help me do that.
Oh, and I'm honestly just employing some "next level" help on this project. I've always had excellent, professional people on my projects, and this time is no exception. But now that I'm living in Nashville and working more closely with so many music professionals, the level of expertise and musicianship is just at an all-time high. And that costs a little more. But I think you'll be amazed at the results.
Risks and challenges
As with my last two projects, I don't anticipate a lot of risks or challenges, because I've already done most of the hard stuff. All the songs are written, and I'm about halfway done with the recording. I have all the relationships, connections and general "know-how" to finish the "musical" part of the project, just not all the funds.
At this point, since I've done most of the creative grunt work, I just need to complete the recording, then have it mixed, mastered, graphic-designed, packaged and marketed. I already have lots of those contacts (mixing and mastering engineers, designers, etc) and they already know what they're supposed to do. I just have to pay them to do it. I've done over a dozen records in my career, so I know how to do this. It's just tougher than it used to be to make any money selling music. Hence the campaign.
Obviously there are unforeseen things that always arise, but I'm fortunate to have a lot of friends and connections in my business who I can hire to get it done as long as the funding is available.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
