About

“Jag Parmar tackles the subject of “dowry” head on. This eye-opening film delivers a bold yet compassionate portrayal of the issue and presents it in a very Canadian context.” - Syerah Virani, Editor-in-Chief & CEO, MyBindi.com

'The Timing of “Dowry” is extremely relevant both locally and internationally.'  Award-winning Composer, Vikas Kohli of FatLabs.

What is a Dowry?

Centuries ago, families would provide the daughter that’s getting married with some valuables like gold and money in case something unfortunate should happen to her husband. So, she can still provide for herself and her children.

Today, the practice of dowry is against the law in India yet it’s a growing underground business all over the world where dowry is now being demanded by grooms and their families.

SYNOPSIS:

An underprivileged, South Asian family has a wedding to plan for one of the two sisters. It’s a stressful business, when the the family does not have enough dowry. The two sisters, Gia and Mausam have been anticipating Mausam’s wedding for as long as they can remember. The sisters are far closer than Gia would like. While her sister moves onto the next phase of her life, Gia knows they will never be going their separate ways. Gia is bound to a wheelchair and she knows she will always be the root of the family’s worries. This worry heightens when Gia falls in-love and also demands a dowry.

The feud begins between the two sisters over an already insufficient dowry. Gia is faced with the scorn of not only her sister but also her grandmother who has deemed her to be the family burden. Her only teetering support is her mother. What no one realizes is that she does not want marital bliss at the expense of her sister. The dowry, meant for Mausam remains incomplete. While feeling alienated by everyone other than her fiancé and the little support her mother, Sakshi is able to offer, Gia’s means of securing some independence takes on a new meaning. She decides to take the little money she earns as a music teacher to secure her sister’s dowry.

The wedding plans continue and the rituals begin. Gia and Mausam get ready for the big day. Both spend the entire morning adorning from head to toe.  They come down the aisle, being given away by their uncle. The weddings happen without a hitch and the brides anticipate their wedding night. Gia and her husband have their first blissful moments of marriage together. She is all the while unaware that Mausam’s dowry was still not enough.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

It’s been four years on this journey and with as little as $10, it will bring me just a little closer to the finale. I can almost see it! The cast, crew and post production team have all come on board believing that this story will take you on a journey of your own. It may make you pause, maybe give you a chill, or simply leave you thinking…

Risks and challenges

The obstacles begin right when the words come out of your mouth, ‘let’s make a movie!’ You've done your research and written a sound script. The edits are endless and continue even throughout the course of the shoot. Your script evolves and you can hardly keep up as you start to devise a plan to make the story come to life. The tally begins of sets required, crew needed and cast to walk in the shoes of the characters you so carefully created. The list continues with many other resources that include equipment rentals and pounding the pavement looking for people who can offer you anything, for free!

The budget is done and you realize that the final figure is far more than all public sources of funding combined. This means you may not even qualify for some of the sources. Here is where you’re bartering with faith. If you can make people have faith in you and believe in your story then this may come in exchange for money or in-kind support. After you’ve preached as loud as you can that this is a movie worth making and better yet, watching, you’ve got yourself a small team of cast and crew that come on board for minimal pay and taking on multiple roles and titles. What you know is a five week shoot, becomes three. A ten hour day is now sixteen.

The shoot is done, you've just managed to scrape enough together to pay your cast and crew. The Post Production team is now on stand-by. Two months have gone by, while they wait for a green light to start an assembly edit. This green light will go on once we have the funds for editing, sound mixing, original music, color grading, graphics, digital conversions and marketing. The proud moments are yet to come. We still have to pay for film festivals that include press kits and distribution.
