Our Goals

What we’re trying to achieve here at Paul Marli Games is build a large player base with our new trading card game. The purpose of this Kickstarter is to do just that and allow us to create Set 2.  We desire to keep creating more cards and helping others experience the world of Alaria.

WHAT SETS ALARIA TCG APART?

There are many concerns players have with Trading Card Games in general. After a year of prototyping, revising, and test playing, we are pleased to say that Alaria TCG does NOT suffer from ANY of these deficiencies. There are several factors that set us apart Including the following:

NOT pay-to-win!

EVERY single card has value!  You heard that right, EVERY single card. They all have their own role and purpose. Heard it before from other games eh?  Sure they can SAY that, but that still does not prevent others from avoiding certain cards because they’re regarded as “filler” cards.

Here’s the thing: when you have a system designed where playing your cards requires resources, if you play your resources well, then what do you think the player will focus on playing?  The “GOOD cards”! The “MOST powerful cards”!  There’s no reason to play any of the “weaker“ ones if you can fill your deck with all of the ”good” ones and have the resources to play them.  As long as a player fosters the relationship between RESOURCE and POWERFUL CARD, then there’s no use for a player to use anything else!  This enviroment brings up a most hated enemy: pay-to-win.

With Alaria TCG, the mechanics are designed where your resources ARE your smaller, “weaker” cards. You HAVE to have a balance between weak and powerful cards. Sure you can have a deck filled with all powerful Summons, however you will NOT win the game. Your ability to play your best cards is contingent on how you play the others.

The gameplay is also set up where even in late-game, the weaker cards still bring A LOT of value that the stronger ones do not.  You will find yourself choosing to still play them as the battles progress. It is wise to keep a good amount of weaker cards in your deck.

Another bonus we found in our test play is that because player decks aren’t overly saturated with powerful cards, the player does not get jaded by the fact that they do have powerful Summons.  What we mean by that is that because you do not have as many powerful cards as in other games, it causes you to really appreciate and “savor” what you DO have!

Rarities do NOT affect gameplay!

One problem many players have had with TCG games is the way the games do rarities. Some have even distained even having rarities, signing rarity off as bad game mechanics. In this we would disagree and also clarify.

What players seem to have an issue with is not the fact there are rarities, but what rarities do to the game. It is actually quite similar to the problems mentioned before about the pay-to-win format. We look at rarities in other games as COST and EFFECT where a certain card will have a cost and it’s effect is comparable to the cost it requires. When the distance between these two widens, this is where the problem occurs. If you have a card effect that severely outweighs the cost of a card, then that is where rarities are given; this is where you have “game-breaking” cards, cards that sometimes even gives your opponent a victory despite your efforts to play with skill.

To hit the nail on the head, the problem players have is that rarities AFFECT GAMEPLAY.

Alaria TCG does not suffer this. EVERY card, effect, cost-ratio, type of effect, in any combination is controlled by specific mathematical parameters. This ensures that there are no “one-card-armies”.  In fact, for the most part, you can technically call all the cards Common, if you would like, and it wouldn’t change anything. what rarities do is simply limit the availability of cards as the power AND cost goes up.

Also, along with the rarities, we have limited the amount you can actually have in each deck: Commons - 4 copies, Specials - 3 copies, Rare - 2 copies, Legendary - 1 copy, Godly - only one in a deck.  We have taken every precaution to make sure there are no gamebreaking cards.  Sure, other games restrict card amount in playable decks, but that is not enough. Rarities should have NO effect on gameplay at all, that is, IF you want a game where it is dependent on player skill other than “whose cards are better”.

The reason for rarities at all in Alaria TCG is not for gameplay, but for collectibility. THAT is what we feel rarities should be for. Many players, in many instances, like focusing more on collecting than just gameplay. We have accommodated for those by the way the cards are laid out but also in rarities.

Remember: rarities should affect collectibility, NOT gameplay.

Gameplay ACTUALLY Requires Strategy

In any trading card game one is subject by the chance of getting ”resource jipped” or being subject to “luck of the draw” situations.  Sometimes this may be due to players failing to build a deck smart, but a lot of instances it’s not the deck’s fault, but rather the draw. Is this a problem that trading Card Games are destined to always have?

We are happy to say, NO! Alaria TCG game mechanics prevents these problems in two ways First, before a battle begins, the pre-battle phase actually requires players to draw in such a way where they are ABLE to play. Because of this there will be no reason why a player should get “messed over” due to the draw.  Another method we implimented during the battle phase allows a player to be able to still gain resources to be able to push their own gameplay forward whilst not giving them an unfair advantage.  It is designed to offset any other issues with luck, thus boiling it down to SKILL.

One of the other great things about our Trading Card Game is that the game is set up into battles.  Players undergo multiple battles to defeat their opponent and win the game. What this does is allows for players to really play their deck to its fullest potential and demonstrate their skill. Let’s face it: sometimes, as seen in other games, a player just gets unfortunate, or their opponent gets a streak of good fortune and that seems to autopilot the rest of the game, and the player is fighting a constant uphill battle for the rest of the game, not due to their lack of skill. Not with us!

In each battle, players demonstrate their skills and strategy to get as many points as possible. Once a battle resolves, players prepare for the next battle, building off of their gameplay from the previous one. Think of it as boxing rounds.  After a round, boxers have a time to take a breathe, reset, and prepare themselves for the next one. This “breather and reset” in Alaria TCG allows the players to truly see who is the best, instead of getting a “lucky game” in. Players win off their skills alone.

One thing we feel is important to mention also is that in a trading card game, to truly make it strategy-based, completely, it needs to be more than just deck vs deck, otherwise you may fall victim to pay-to-win because, for the most part, the winner is the one simply with the better deck, aka: better cards!

We wanted to design gameplay where it was more chess-like. For example a queen is a better piece than a pawn, however, if played smart, a pawn CAN take a queen. The thing with chess is that players have a “common ground” to work with, the playing field the pieces are on. So too do we use this concept in Alaria TCG. The “holy grail” of our game comes in the way we play the cards on the field. Placement of cards is absolute key in the game. The field is everything. With our concept of something we call, Range, gameplay forces a player to play the field instead of playing their cards. They use their cards and leverage field placement to overcome their opponent, even if they have more powerful cards. This one feature alone has brought a unique and fresh spin in the world of trading card games! This also provides a player to use the same deck, but ALWAYS have different gameplay. No matter how you build your deck around a theme, gameplay will always be different (just like chess!).

You think these claims are outlandish? Sounds too good to be true? Well believe it. These are backed up by hours of research and development and also testplay. This is truly a game you can learn to master!

Oh!  We almost forgot to mention: the gameplay and methods are also lore-friendly! The game mechanics MAKE SENSE in the context the game setting is in! (For those of you who are lore-buffs!)

There is so much Alaria TCG offers to the card playing community.  Whether you’re a casual or hardcore gamer, deck builder, or collector, this brand new, one of a kind game has something to offer YOU!

Risks and challenges

Honestly we don’t have any particular challenges with this project. We have the a printing company ready to print the cards. Once we are fully funded we will immediately begin the process of getting cards out to our backers. A POTENTIAL problem is that if this blows up on Kickstarter, more than we expect, then it would take time for us to place those orders. But to accommodate that, we put the expectation to receive the rewards on March 2019 as opposed to earlier, just to give us that safety cushion.
