Small 3D Printing
The purpose of this kickstarter is to bring 3D printing to people who can't fit a large 3D printer into their lives, or would like a small 3D printer for learning, or as a spare 3D printer, or simply for the novelty of it. This miniature can be held in your hand while it prints, and takes about as much desk space as a sheet of paper. The printer is based on widely available technology and is compatible with free and open-source software for 3D printing.
The Baby 3D™ Printers project offers to refine and manufacture personal 3D printers. Based on an existing open-source design, the The Baby 3D miniature and its unique features were developed by James Carpino and minirap.com.
What is 3D Printing?
3D printers allow a three-dimensional object on a computer screen to be made in physical form. The objects that can be 3D printed vary greatly: you can print artistic projects like statuettes and vases, household objects such as hooks and stands, mechanical devices, toys, even music boxes. Some of the things you can print are merely toys and trinkets, and some of the things you can print are extremely special and rare, because you could not buy them any other way.
Just imagine downloading an object from the internet and making an object that takes physical form: this is an amazing option for the world. You can print specialized tools for science or art or hobbies, customized games, personalized items to suit your own needs. 3D printing can even be used to create prosthetic hands and tools to assist persons with disabilities. And 3D printed parts are very inexpensive.
But perhaps the strongest argument for 3D printing is in how it enables people to design and create arbitrary three-dimensional things. You only need the imagination and the willpower. Making it smaller makes it possible for more people to try 3D printing. 3d printers are fun to use, educational, and useful in new ways for art, science, invention, hobbies, and for making toys and gifts. 3D printing filament, the “ink” for 3D printing- come in may forms, there are rubberized, carbon fiber, metallic, conductive, translucent, wood-filled, color-changing, high-strength, food-safe, and rainbow-colored filaments have all become available, opening up the possibility for great things.

The original prototype miniature was shown at Maker Faire New York 2014 and caught some attention. In 2015, the printer won a blue ribbon and was the focus of an interview by Adafruit reporter Dano Wall.
Building and using a 3D printer can be part of comprehensive STEM and STEAM programs as well as college elective, art, engineering, and science courses.
The 3D printer models here are miniaturized clones of the Printrbot Simple 1405 Edition whose details were kindly released by Brook Drumm and Printrbot under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike open-source license. The full designs of the miniature will be released along with a bill of material and assembly instructions, under the same license. Printrbot is a registered trademark of Brook Drumm, and the miniature 3D printers offered here are not products of Printrbot or Brook Drumm. Risks and challenges
This printer has been over a year in development, and is descended from a line of successful designs, making this a low-risk endeavor. The challenges in our kickstarter are in sourcing parts unique to our printer. Risks include delays in parts supplies. We're communicating with multiple suppliers to reduce that risk as much as possible. We're working with local, domestic, and international manufacturers to plan custom manufacturing and parts delivery, and we expect to be able to meet our delivery schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
