About us

Arte dei Suonatori is a baroque chamber orchestra from Poland.  Our Italian name comes from the Venetian instrumentalists’ guild, meaning „The art of harmony”. Building on the work of our ancestors, we aim to incorporate the best musicians who desire to perform baroque and classical music on period instruments. Over the years we have managed to create a group of instrumentalists, whose fascination in classical music and commitment to quality have no equal. Musical leadership over the project will be entrusted to Martin Gester - a French conductor and harpsichord player - with whom we have worked repeatedly over the last 11 years. The cooperation has given rise to the album of Haendel’s Concerti grossi op. 6 [BIS-SACD-1705/06 w 2009r.] rewarded multiple times by the International Critic, most importantly with the Prelude Classical Music Awards 2009 album of the year award in the orchestral music category. The project’s natural consequence will be a recording of the next album - Haendel’s Concerti grossi op. 3 in the same Swedish record label BIS.

About the repertoire

Concerti grossi op. 3 is a collection of pieces published by Walsh’s Publishing House in London in 1734. It is not known why Haendel decided to publish such a diverse set of works: four of which were composed at the beginning of his visit in England (after 1710), while the remaining two - in the later period. Perhaps he was looking for an additional source of income, fearing the looming end of the popularity of his opera compositions? The most probable presumption seems to be that Mr Walsh gathered and published the Concerti without consulting the composer, hoping for a possibility of great gains. Supposedly, it is thanks to his knack for business that we can savour the beauty of this exceptional set of concerts for various solo instruments, marked by the publisher with number 3. These compositions instrumentation variety could be perceived today as a one of its many advantages - we have an opportunity to listen to, characteristic for this genre, solos for oboes or violins and cello, for a traverso, two recorders together with two bassoons, as well as, finally, an exquisite solo of two cellos.

Risks and challenges

You may be wondering why the recordings of such a renowned ensemble are not financed by record labels inviting us to record. Well, while it might have been possible several years ago, over time the record labels have started having financial problems, due to decreasing album sales. Nowadays, record labels recording and publishing classical and jazz music are only able to cover the costs partially, leaving the majority of expenses to be covered by musicians themselves. In Poland, raising that money is not easy, because corporate- and private-financing of cultural events is, so far, not very popular.

We believe that there are no problems only challenges that’s why we have decided to turn to you for help in making our musical plans come true. Coming from Poland, we couldn’t introduce our project on Kickstarter, therefore, we asked our friend and a longstanding Swedish member of our ensemble, lute player Doyho Sol, to present it on our behalves. We would like to be able to share our passion and the music we love with you. If you want to back us, please choose between options available on the right hand side.

Should you not choose any option, but you believe the project is noteworthy, please share this campaign via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter - maybe one of your friends could contribute to it.

Thank you for your time dedicated to familiarise with our campaign. We are truly grateful for all your help.
