Find out what the next generation of Philly boxers have to say about this documentary.

 About the Film

Tyrell Biggs, a standout athlete in high school, takes up boxing and wins Olympic Gold and his first 15 pro fights. But there’s a dark side to Biggs, one that includes a history of drug and alcohol abuse. Following a devastating loss in his title fight with Tyson, Biggs falls into obscurity, then must slowly try to rebuild his life.

Were drugs his downfall – the addiction he could never really recover from? Did his management take him too far too fast, throwing him in too soon against the seemingly indestructible Mike Tyson? What was the long- term damage inflicted on him by the savage beating he endured at the hands of Tyson? And how does one explain the catastrophically downward spiral of his career as he subsequently loses against a series of opponents far less skilled than he?

His sudden fall from grace, his loss of heart and his struggle make for a gut-wrenching tale. Biggs’s former managers and trainers, as well as referees, boxing historians, friends and opponents, all have strong opinions about the character of the man, the skills he possessed and the promise that was never fulfilled.

As Filmmakers we felt moved to connect the dots from the classic tragic boxing tale of Tyrell Biggs to the hope of the West Philadelphia interfaith and multigenerational community and after school program that adopts this fallen hero and, with him, begins to write a new chapter in boxing for a struggling neighborhood.

Whatever Happened to Tyrell Biggs? is not only a great sports biopic, but a film that will shine a light on the importance of after-school programs and community engagement needed to help inner city youth succeed.

West Philadelphia and the Shepard Recreation Center are bursting with good stories but lack the resources to tell their own tale. Help give them a voice. This is an important project -- not just for those of us who have dedicated ourselves to it, but for the many that can be helped and inspired by this incredible story.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

How can you, our supporters, be sure we’ll complete this film and get it out to a larger audience?

Our team has a proven track record for successful films and series.
Our most recent award-winning feature doc, "Digital Dharma: One Man’s Mission to Save a Culture" was successfully crowd funded on Kickstarter in 2012, went on to be Oscar qualified, and is still the darling of film festivals and screenings around the world. It has also been picked up for international distribution.

We have been working on “Whatever Happened to Tyrell Biggs?” for two years. Our advisors are leading coaches, trainers, managers, refs, promoters and fighters from boxing’s past and present.

Those relationships that give us unique and total access, along with our experience with NGO and human rights storytelling, demonstrate that we have the empathy, technical capability, and creativity to tackle and expand a theme to a global audience and deliver an outstanding film that should be in theaters, on television, online and in every educational archive

Challenges

We know that a majority of the archival footage and photographs have been located but need to be transferred to HD and licensed. With historic Sports Documentaries, licensing fees is usually the thorn in every independent producers side. The Olympics and networks are very proprietary and with boxing footage, in particular, it is difficult and costly to get licensing in perpetuity which is needed for independent Documentaries.

We are well known for our graphics design teams and will reduce the cost of many of the archival fights by creating unique animated re-enactments.
The Philadelphia Community has had and continues to have a great music personality. It is the heartbeat of many of the communities that also revere the sport of boxing. We are hoping to license some of the music of the past and present along with original scoring.

Take a look at many of the winning KOs in production from our team bios.
