About

While most people know about home gaming consoles in this day and age, few people might still remember the days of the video arcade.  I wish to bring back the days when you could go out with your friends to play video games (which should be attractive to anyone who has heard the words "You never leave your room!") There was never a shortage of controllers for the group, just a need to pick a different game to play while you waited.  Some might even remember being able to play games before they came to a home console, including some games that never made that jump.  If you miss those days, or if this concept sounds interesting to you, you're in luck. I currently own and operate a mall-based video arcade in Racine, Wisconsin, and have done so since May, 2005. Due to a drop-off in patronage at my current location, it has become necessary to relocate to Milwaukee, which has a higher volume of areas with good foot traffic and more dedicated clientele for arcade games in general.

For those who are new to the concept, or just want a refresher to be able to walk down memory lane with, here you go:

A video arcade consists of the original arcade cabinets that helped start the video game craze.  My personal arcade includes games from this earlier age, up to modern day hits that people can't get enough of.  I do my best to make sure that I have some things that the original arcade generation will enjoy, along with newer items to keep the new generation engaged.  This includes some of the long time favorites such as: Pinball machines, Donkey Kong, Mrs. Pac-Man, Mario Kart, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and an 'Ultracade' that has over 100 classic games on it.  From there, arcade goers will remember some of the bit more modern ones such as Tekken 6, Soul Caliber 2, Need For Speed Underground, Dance Dance Revolution and Air Hockey.  I have also been able to get my hands on new age favorites like DJMAX Technika 3.  With the move I hope to update a few of the older games, and get my hands on a few new games like the new Batman racing title, Pokken Tournament (a new Pokemon fighting game that will be releasing soon) and a few more pinball machines to keep things interesting.

I also plan on having a section of tables that you can rent out for birthday parties and other social events.  Because you need to have some place to put the snacks and cake. This will be a large enough space for whole families or small to mid-sized school groups to enjoy a full party experience.

Sounds great, Right?  Now this is where you come in.  I am looking into and comparing several venues for a suitable location for my new store front, but it seems all of them will require some extensive remodeling along with a higher rent than what I'm currently paying.  All this combined with the slowing foot traffic at my current location, puts moving up to a new location just a bit out of reach (maybe more than a bit).

In order to get my new location off the ground, I will require help from my fellow arcade enthusiasts around the internet. My main goal is to provide a simple and affordable place for amazing arcade games and prizes, but should I meet my funding goal quickly, I will add stretch goals for more games, a larger location, and even laser tag and mini-golf!

Risks and challenges

Some would say that video arcades in general just can't succeed in this day and age, but as someone who has run one for nearly a decade of this modern age, I feel more than up to the task of keeping the fun alive. But to be able to kick off this new age of arcade fun, I need to have the funding to set it up right.

The largest obstacle I face right now, will be finding the right location. Milwaukee is a large place with ample retail space available, so I am confident that I will be able to open my new location quickly, even if none of the locations I am currently pursuing pan out.

Before opening my business in Racine, I was trained by and worked for some of the best in the industry, so I have almost fifteen years of experience working with and repairing arcade machines. I've made mistakes, but I've learned from every one of them, and I know that now is the time to really show how great arcades can still be!
