In November of 2011 I lost
what I thought would be a long stable job with Yahoo!. While blindsided by this
I wasn’t at all upset. I knew that I was spinning my wheels in a career that I
wanted no part of 5-10 years down the road. I took this as a clear sign that I
was meant to part ways.
About a month later I woke up with an idea and immediately began putting it down on
paper. Five hours later I had half my menu written down and felt absolutely
certain that I knew what I was supposed to do with the next chapter in my life.
I spent the next 7 months
making preparations to open Portland’s very first salad restaurant using 100%
natural and organic ingredients. With my business plan and financial analysis
complete I began looking for a location, however due to the youthful age of my
small business no bank or credit union was willing to lend me the money. They
directed me towards the Small Business Association, who then directed me back
to my bank.
After completing this circle
I spent the next few weeks incredibly discouraged, but with support of my
friends who I call family I decided to change my attitude, adjusted my plans and launched Portland's only salad food cart in February 2013. I’m a one-man entrepreneur following my dreams and have put literally everything I have into this. I've taken first steps with sincere passion
and enthusiasm and welcome you all for the ride as we grow from here.
We have plans to move our 1st and only cart from our home on Alberta to Downtown Portland's food cart pod on 3rd & Washington where we feel that Garden Monsters has the best opportunity to thrive. There are thousands of daily workers, students and tourists that will soon be within walking distance of a brand new, creative, health conscious, made to order (custom orders welcomed), and highly satisfying new addition to food cart dining.
PROJECT UPDATE - 9/22/13 - WE'RE STAYING ON ALBERTA!!!
The pro's and con's of a move right now have constantly been on my mind. After weighing in all factors I've decided that no matter how things end up with our Kickstarter that we are going to Stay Right Here On Alberta Street! We still look forward to the opportunity to expand and thank you all for your ongoing support!
We wish to construct a mobile food truck that will allow us to keep serving our customer base in Northeast Portland and also take on the many vending opportunities being offered to us. This year already we were been forced to decline dozens of weddings, music festivals, work events and more due to the fact that we're located in a stationary brick and mortar style food cart pod. Risks and challenges
Many food cart owners have a background in food service but know nothing about marketing, financial management and business in general. My 12 year background in marketing and sales has put us ahead of the game since day one. Our plan is to hire someone with years of additional kitchen experience to help run the new cart allowing us to find the right balance.
The food cart buzz in Portland has been holding strong for several years now which has lead hundreds of new entrepreneurs to leave their days jobs and take on the risk of being their own boss. After countless success stories the city has reached a point where the food cart market is a bit saturated. Our unique, delicious, and health conscious offerings will give us the leverage we need to thrive while other food carts may struggle to survive and potentially die off.
