I am an Archeologist: A child's book for fulfilling dreams (Canceled)
This is the story of a child who dreams of being an archeologist, following him from childhood to old age and a dream fulfilled.
Shortly after the youngest of my four children was born, it dawned on me that each of them would leave home one day (yes, I was delusional in thinking they would be there forever). All my children would pursue jobs, careers and paths in life to ends that I could not see. Reflecting upon this, I feared that their path in life might be laid down by others and not by themselves. So, one bleak and snowy morning when a lone crow came cawing, I wrote a story to show my children that their path in life could be of their own making, that their choices could reflect their dreams and aspirations and not those of others.
I Am an Archeologist is that story.
I am an Archeologist is for all parents who seek to encourage their children to pursue their passions and dreams. This, and other books we have planned in the series, take a look at many careers and paths to fulfilling childhood dreams, hopes and aspirations. The books all emphasize determination, hard work, sacrifice and education as essential elements to developing fulfilling careers that reflect those varied childhood dreams. Our hope is that these simple stories foster all those attributes necessary to following those dreams into your child's adult life.
Being an archeologist was my only childhood dream and by doggedly chasing that dream, I managed to become an archeologist (at least for much of my adult life). This book is about that childhood dream and how that dream became a reality (almost to the end).
I am an Archeologist follows that dream from my early childhood playing with toy dinosaurs, avidly reading anything I could find on archeology and dinosaurs to pursuing the study of archeology in college. Afterwards the book explores the career of an archeologist until an old man sitting in a recliner, still dreaming of dinosaurs.
The book is written for children from ages 5 to 8. I chose this age because these are the formative years for a child as they begin to envision their future selves and it is exactly the time for them to see that all things are possible. It is written in the first person to engage your child on an intimate level, so when they read it, they can see themselves in it and not peering from the outside in or looking at someone else's life. The emphasis in the book is in finding that passion and then applying study, hard work, study and more hard work to achieve a dream that may seem so impossible to achieve.
I am an Archeologist is a lavishly illustrated full color 54 page book. The art for the book is complete and it is laid out ready to go to the printer. The only thing left is for us to reach our support goal.
Why have we chosen this venue for publishing I am an Archeologist?
There are several major reasons, so please allow me….
- We need to prepare a retail package for distributors in order to get the book into wider distribution. Primarily being game producers (Troll Lord Games), children’s books are a new venue for us. We are reaching out to the Kickstarter community for support not only to fund the project but also allowing us to approach retailers with a built in interest in I am an Archeologist and the other books we have planned in the series. This should help move the book into retail locations across the United States and hopefully elsewhere.
- In addition to this, we are making it possible for you, the supporter, to help bring this book to wider attention by supporting any local organization, school or library of your choosing by purchasing a book for them. This can be done through your pledge level and by choosing a library, organization or school of your choice for us to send the book.
- Finally, this is just the first in a series of “I am…” books Chenault and Gray has planned. We would really like to rapidly expand on the series and produce more books exploring other career options or dreams children have. Funding even small books is fairly expensive and once our goal is reached we can begin the process of creating more in the series.
I am an Archeologist in Thai!
We are also offering a Thai edition of the book. As part of the process of learning Thai, my teacher and I translated I am an Archeologist to Thai. Once done, I decided that all the effort having gone into the translation would best be spent productively. In addition to being about aspiring to fulfill dreams, the book can be used as a translation primer for those learning Thai and even made available to parents and children in Thailand. However, we are currently only allowing these books as paperback add-ons rather than part of the pledge. Many other languages are being considered as well.
Who Am I: A Dreamer and a Father!
My first job as an archeologist - first day as well.
I've changed since then.
The rewards are, for the most part, self-explanatory but I think a bit of elaboration is always necessary, especially for a few levels.
The digital copy is delivered as a high resolution PDF through DriveThruRPG. The digital Postcard will be sent via email or DriveThruRPG. Our poster is a full color 12x18 print of the cover, signed and delivered.
$60 Pledge Level: Now the interesting portion of the backer levels comes next. We would like for you to support any local libraries, groups, schools or organizations of your choice who might benefit from this book as well. At the 60.00 support level, you receive a hardback and paperback copy of the book. Additionally, at this level, submit the addresses of two libraries, schools or organizations you would like to support allowing us to send each a copy of the book.
*Please note, we cannot guarantee that your library will take the book. Many libraries have policies against donations or publisher copies (for obvious reasons), but we will do our best to get it in there.
$90.00 Pledge Level: With your support you receive everything from the $60 pledge level, as well as an extra hardcover copy of the book with the name of your child, or another name of your choice, stamped on the front of the book. I will sign the book and write a personal note of encouragement to your child!
I Am An Archeologist additional copy: $15.00
Risks and challenges
The challenge for a children's book is to make certain that the content is both readable and enjoyable, and accompanied with artwork that engages any child and keeps them interested.
Further challenges come with making people (parents and their children), book stores, libraries and distributors aware of the book and its value. This we hope to achieve with the library option offered in the pledge amounts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
