WHAT IS THIS KICKSTARTER?
We are producing the FOUR volume Edgar Rice Burroughs' 100 Year Art Chronology, an illustrative history of all Burroughs' publications in the United States (with a heavy dose of art from the United Kingdom). Written and compiled by Michael Tierney, the narrative gives the history of Burroughs' work and the often legendary artists who visualized it, featuring untold stories, art that hasn't been seen since its release, and pieces that were buried in the vaults from the beginning of his publishing history to the present day.
Officially licensed and sanctioned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., this nearly 1,200 page examination of the vast publishing illustrative history of Edgar Rice Burroughs is divided into four part. You can click on the LINK to view a sample. (NOTE: the resolution on the samples is reduced to make for faster downloads).
- Volume 1: The Pulps The Dawn of the Age of Science Fiction
- Volume 2: The Books Literature With Sharp Cutting Edges
- Volume 3: Comics The Universal Language Part 1
- Volume 4: Comics The Universal Language Part 2
- Volume 4: Comics The Univseral Language Part 2 (UK material)
This project is as much an narrative history of ERB's publications as it is a visual history. Michael Tierney, the author, has combed the archives and gathered together a vast treasure trove of art, from pulp covers, to interior art, from novels that range on both sides of the Atlantic to the vast array of comic books that sported ERB's amazing creations. He's taken these and woven them into a discussion that explores the many facets of the various industries and Burroughs place within them.
Michael Tierney has a website filled with all kinds of teasers. You can check those out at the below links:
We've added TWO novels to this amazing Kickstarter!
Tarzan of the Apes, which will sport the cover below and A Princess of Mars, which will have the cover below it!
Here's a very small sample of what you are getting into!
"One of the fun aspects of working on the ERB Art Chronology was discovering things that I never knew before, like how the artist for the 1st hardcover edition of Tanar of Pellucidar, Paul F. Berdanier, was also an artist for many of the never before reprinted Tarzan covers for Tip Top Comics." ~ Michael Tierney
It is filled with very rare items. Cover art that was made but never used, some with runs as limited as 63 copies, comic strips that disappeared as fast as they appeared.
It's a visual history like no other.
Though the books themselves are largely finished, bringing these to print is going to be a massive undertaking. Four full color, 250-300+ page art books (roughly 9 x 12 to 10 x 13) in size, all printed on high gloss, 70# paper is expensive. Not to mention the work that Michael went through to gather and restore art from over a century past, and the mountains of work the folks at ERB., Inc. did to bring all this art out.
From Fred W. Small and the first Warlord of Mars to St John's Tarzan and Michael Whelan, Frank Frazetta, and so many more! We need your help to bring this project to fruition.
Join us in bringing together the art that brought Tarzan, John Carter and so much more to book shelves, comics and pulps!
Who is Edgar Rice Burroughs?
"Edgar Rice Burroughs was, and is, the most influential writer, bar none, of our century." Ray Bradbury
Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) was an American writer best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres.
More on the Books Themselves
The narrative gives the history of Burroughs' work, and the often legendary artists who visualized it. It features new information alongside iconic illustrations and other work that is equally impressive, but has not been seen since their original release.
British books and comics are included as well. Currently, there is no good source of information about the books, and the comics have not been mentioned in U.S. print since the 5th Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide in 1975, which also featured an original Joe Kubert Tarzan on the cover.
All four books are written and the source material gathered, some of it incredibly rare. The fun of assembly is now in process.
But because the books are largely finished, it brings us the option for a simultaneous release of the entire 4-book set.
Several thousand images will be mixed into the narrative and range in size from full page to a dozen or more images to a page, with some group shots.
About Michael Tierney
Michael Tierney first discovered the writings of Edgar Rice Burroughs as a child in the 1960s and he could find no information about the extent of his works. The research that led to the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 100 Year Art Chronology started then. Much of the money he earned delivering newspapers was sent in mail orders to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., and the rest was spent at a local cigar shop where they let him unpack their weekly comic shipments and he could pick out the nicest copies. Michael had no idea at the time that he would be doing this for the rest of his life -- having been a comic book specialty bookstore owner/operator since 1982, with multiple locations in central Arkansas since 1989. The end result is the collection of pristine examples of the books and comics shown in this Chronology. Other items, like his Pulp magazine collection -- some of them over 100 years old -- he had to buy second hand and has restored them to pristine appearance thanks to skills gained from his other careers in the printing industry and as an independent comic, magazine and book creator since 1977.
Michael has been an Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide advisor since 1999, and has written thousands of articles, market reports and reviews for many different publications. His experiences in every aspect of the book and comic book industries, from creation to manufacturing, publication and retailing, all lend to a 360 degree perspective when analyzing the rich publishing history that is the legacy of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Here's Michael at a local comic book convention with Kayla Esmond as Catwoman!
About Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. is an American company founded in 1923 by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is based in Tarzana, California. The company holds the rights to the literary works of Burroughs that are still protected by copyright.
Burroughs was one of the first artists to incorporate, which he did for tax reasons and for more control over his works. Burroughs' books were published through the company from 1931 (Tarzan the Invincible) through 1948 (Llana of Gathol), with one additional title (I Am a Barbarian) appearing in 1967.
The company remains in the ownership of the Burroughs family and manages and licenses Burroughs' works and characters, including Tarzan and John Carter of Mars.

Risks and challenges
Large books such as this one are hard to print and bind and we have to choose our printers with care.
One of the greatest challenges we face is creating such a large book and maintaining the quality of the printing and binding. In order to do this, we must find a printer with the knowledge and capabilities to execute a book of this size and have it look polished and professional, something we take great pride in. This will cost more than the usual printing, so Kickstarter becomes essential in raising enough capital to give this book the quality it demands and deserves.
We are confident that with a successful Kickstarter we can bring this product to the world not only as a great resource, but also as a great looking book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
