Hey, funny people! Let's make a multiple choice narrative film about love, lust, and monogamy!
Like so many of my friends and colleagues, I have spent the early part of my career making silly videos, which I love. Lately, though, I have wondered if it is possible for someone, like me, to make a sincere film about real human experiences? Better yet, what if I got some of NY's best improvisors to dedicate their craft to something that wasn't wholly comedic, but instead, to some real artistic expression and stuff? That's sort of the idea of this film: Let's take a group of people who work their ass off to make people laugh, and see what happens when they devote the same time and energy into being artistically truthful and perhaps revealing a part of themselves that we don't see on stage or in funny videos.
The story, itself, looks at the dilemma of monogamy through exploring all of the risks, rewards, and consequences of breaking it. We will see all of the options that the protagonist has in a dubious situation, in sort of a "choose your own adventure" that only film can make possible! With cast members like Nate Dern (UCB performer & artistic director, "Beauty and the Geek", "Gossip Girl"), Veronica Osorio (UCB, MTV), Kate Riley ("Colbert Report", "Gossip Girl", MTV), Bridey Elliot ("The Late Show", MTV) and crew like Paul Rondeau (College Humor, "Mansome"), Ed Mundy ("Archer", "Inside Amy Shumer"), and Mack Williams ("Archer", "Sealab 2021") involved, I can't think of a collaboration more jam-packed with talented, dedicated people. And don't worry, WE'RE NOT TAKING OURSELVES TOO SERIOUSLY!!! These folks can't avoid being funny at least some of the time.
Last night we hit our goal of 12,000! I am beside myself with happiness and gratitude. Thank you all so very very much! This means that no matter what, the project will be funded, and we'll make a great film, all thanks to you. There are still 24 hours to go. If you do know people who were thinking about donating, we are striving now, towards a secondary goal of $14,000. That extra $2,000 would allow us to do even bigger and better things with the film we didn't think would be possible before like: increasing our art direction budget, allowing us to invest in original music and professional sound mix, and helping us pay for festival fees and promotional material. Let anyone asking know, it would be money we could really use and would be well spent.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Our biggest challenges are the typical intangibles of production: achieving the right paperwork, permits, permissions, location fees, feeding/paying cast and crew, long hours, transportation, equipment, insurance, etc. Not to mention distribution and publicity costs once the thing is done. And, of course, there always the risk of falling flat on your face and looking like a dumb dumb, but I'm pretty used to that kind of thing at this point.
I do! I am happily employed, working on a television show. This project is not about paying me to do a job. I will be making no money off of it. In fact, I will be contributing about $2000 of my own money to help finance the film. Despite my employment, I ultimately find that the best way to fulfill my potential as an artist is by making films and nobody is ever going to ask me to do that unless I, well, start making films. Kind of catch 22. If I could afford to fully finance a film on my own, I would. If I thought I could raise enough to make feature that could make money, I would. This is the only way I can conceive of making a film and the only way I know how to finance it.
When you pledge to the kickstarter fund, your money remains in your bank account until the project is 100% pledge. If that goal is met, and only if that goal is met, it would be transferred into an amazon business account built specifically for the project (and not into my bank account) to be allocated by our film's producers (not me) for all film expenses. I have already put deposits down for locations and other expenses that I am hoping to be reimbursed for, from these producers.
I do! You will find on my kickstarter profile that I have contributed to 5 other projects in the past and don't miss a cent of that money. Because of my contributions, I have had the ability to be a part of the creation of several beautiful films and albums. I can also say that it is, in many ways, due to the mutual support of those in the artistic community that many and my friends, and myself, are where we are, today.
You will not. I will not. This is not a money making endeavor. If making a short film was marketable, I would bring this project to an investor, show him/her the risks/rewards and earnings potential and repeat this process until my proposal was convincing enough to get the film funded. That being said, this could certainly lead to the creation of such a project. And if you were (say and executive producer) you would, in fact, be in a position to potentially profit off of that. That being said, the only financial rewards I can foresee for the average contributor of this project is a trickle down one that would come from raising my, and my collaborator's, profile.
A) Best case scenario: We win an Oscar and/or somebody pays us to extend the short into a feature length film. All of you get to enjoy both things with us. I eventually become some kind of philanthropist that gives millions to great causes, because he could not be where he was without the help of good people like you. B) Worst case scenario: we make a beautiful film that nobody, outside of us, care much about. We will still have this and I can not conceive how having it would not benefit, at least those involved with the project, in some way. C) Realistic scenario: something in between a and b. The film gets shown at some great festivals and on the web. We get the attention of some investors who help fund our next project which is not only bigger and better, but no longer relies on the kindness of friends and family to get produced. This scenario still lends itself to the possibility of us turning this short into a feature or TV series.
Like I said, there are actually tangible rewards offered on my kickstarter page. I have looked into the most valuable services that I provide and offered them to you in a way that seems fairly in step with what you would be contributing. I can not think of anything else that I know how to provide, in addition to what you see on there, but if you think of something, I might be willing to entertain the idea of adding this service to the rewards page. The main thing, though, that contributing to this cause give you is the chance to be a part of something really special. This is not an ordinary project for me, which is why I had to go through an unconventional method of executing it. This is something that I believe will raise my and my collaborators/colleagues profile to a new status and thus, I believe, ultimately benefit the community of folks on this email in many intangible ways that we may not be able to predict at the moment. Think of it like this: If I were starting a restaurant, you would not be receiving and stake in its profits, nor would I. I would however get to enjoy my love of cooking for all of you and you would get to eat at this place for free (as well as its spawn of chains) for the rest of your life. You would take your friends there and see your picture on the wall. I would come out and shake your hand and offer to make you something special. Shit, maybe I should just start a restaurant? But I digress.
I does not NEED to be made. I very much want it to be made and I think we would all be better off if it was made. The plot is an extremely intriguing one that seems to have captivated the imaginations of some very talented people who now want to be a part of it. It is unlike other films I have seen before and one I wrote because it is the kind of film that I would like to see. My aim is to make it both very truthful and compelling by telling a very realistic story about a real human dilemma, as well as magical and fantastic by using a very unconventional story structure that can only be done through an artistic work (because the real world has no known alternate time quadrants). The cinematographer I am using, has never shot anything shy of gorgeous. The actors in the film are proven outstanding talents and I am a proven comedy video and TV director. If this film gets funded, it will be a joy to watch for me and everyone involved and it will only lead to us being able to do more of this for years to come. If it does not get made, I will be ok. I have a great job, family, and friends. I am just looking to fulfill my and my friend's potential to the fullest of our abilities in the best way I know how. If I were on my deathbed now, and I knew I had the opportunity to make a film like this and never did, I would regret it. Though, I would still be very happy with how things turned out.
8) I work very hard and don't have much excess income left over for my own life's fulfillment. It just doesn't make sense for me to give away that money to fulfill yours.
I could not understand more. Not many many of us have piles of money lying around gathering dust. Like I said, this is how I've chosen to spend my excess income, but helping fund movies, might not be how you want to spend yours. I don't take this personally, at all. It may just not be your cup of tea. So many of you have done nice things for me, before. I know you care about me and I will not forget that, no matter what. This is the best proposal I can give you, but its not one I feel that you ought to be compelled to accept. I hope you do, but if you don't I will still love and cherish you, as a person. Seriously, don't sweat it.
9) No but seriously, I literaly do not have a dime to my name. Not even like 10 bucks to give you. I swear I would if I could. Is there ANYthing else I can do?
First off, I used to deliver sandwiches on a bicycle to pay my rent. Trust me, I have so been there. If you could share the kickstarter link on your Facebook page, twitter, or just email it to your friends, that is still tremendously helpful. Bless you, and let me know if there is anyway I can help YOU.
The most common donation is $25. I have no expectation for any amount of money, but at that level you will be invited to come celebrate with us when the film is finished. As far as I am concerned, the more you want to donate, the more involved you would like to be with the project, so I have offered more inclusive rewards as the donations increase. Seriously, though, any amount you can scrap together is greatly appreciated. I realize some of you love me, but can not show it in this way and I still feel that love, guys.
