Official Support for 7 Languages and Tek Tastic Video

Posted by 5 Lives Studios (Creator)

Localisation Stretch Goal Met!

Before we get to the cool tek video, let's all take a moment to be thankful that the Localisation stretch goal is well and truly behind us. So we now support the following languages.

English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian and Czech.

Thanks to those of you who emailed us requests for localisation and a bigger thanks to all those who pledged or upped their pledges.

We are well on our way to Environmental Destruction, 24K to go with our PayPal amounts included.

Speaking of PayPal, apologies if you find our servers slow. We have 150 zx81's tied together with string and we're too nervous to migrate servers at this important time.

48 Hours left

The reminder emails have left KS HQ, PayPal is set up and we have an awesome group of stretch goals ahead.

So let's see this KS out with a bang, like a nuclear hand grenade.

Final 2 Hours Live Twitch Stream

We will have a live twitch stream for the final two hours and everyone's invited. Can we drink beer at 10:00 am? I don't know but Chris is going to give it a try.

There will be snacks and games, I might even let someone else try and beat some levels of Syndicate Wars.

Reflective Awesomeness

Bruno Rime, an old colleague of ours from Krome Studios, has allowed us to present his post effect screen space raytraced reflections system for Unity, SSRR for short. This is actually quite a big deal :) and is the culmination of several years of R&D.

It looks awesome on our desktops in 1080p, unfortunately you will have to make do with just an amazing 720p YouTube video, using in game assets and filmed live from the Unity editor.

SSRR is a post effect reflection system that integrates into a customized variation of Unity's deferred rendering pipeline. By modifying Unity's lighting algorithm to approximate physically based models, the SSRR system is able to better reproduce complex light environments and detailed surfaces. The system is comparable to the technology path taken by both the Crytek and Umbra engines.

We recommend you crank up the quality and hit the full screen button!

  • Specular reflections.
  • Glossy reflections.
  • Fresnel reflections.
  • Approximate Secondary bounce specular reflections.
  • Global Cube Map fallback for infinite and off screen reflections.
  • Light conservation
  • Customized ray marching and diffusion patterning system

In Development

  • Integrated Global illumination
  • Integrated Ambient occlusion
  • Surface continuity prediction and scene continuity analysis for improved performance and higher quality
  • Metallic reflections

I hope you enjoyed this peek behind the scenes into our WIP level and Tek demo.

Amazing results. I'm so tired of these fake reflections, killing all the authenticity once you see the wrong results.
Speaking about graphical Awesomeness: Will the final version of the game support MSAA despite the extra effort implementing this feature with a deferred renderer?

    2. Ankroth on

Hell yeah, thanks for Czech language!

    3. Razor on

When can we get some preview audio???

    4. Senchaholic on

By rain effects I mean the sound. I the variation of water in this clip alone is awesome.

    5. Senchaholic on

Very pretty. Awesome mood. Some nice rain effects, some moody tech music on top of that, and we're set. :)

This is going to be so rad. I can't wait, it's like a reincarnation of the cyberpunk vision Bullfrog gave us.

@Granite ...thats the plan! :) ... this is Brents first test with the tech and it already looks awesome. You can imagine what it will look like after he has been using it for a year! :D

    8. UprightMan on

      that looks fricking amazing!

    9. Granite on

Hope this isn't a dumb question...but these lighting and reflection effects are actually going to be in the final game right?

The world you have created is looking amazing. Go ahead and keep the static camera for gameplay, but please let me occasionally switch to that free cam to just soak up the cyberpunk awesomeness. It would be a shame for such a pretty cityscape to not be fully appreciated in all its glory. Would make a great way to take screenshots and make machinima too.

    11. Azghouls on

This is what happens when you make a game just for the PC (instead of some ported crap) - absolutely awesome. I reckon at the final product, I'm just gonna stare at the reflections (and probably drool too).

    12. Lightning58 on

Thanks for the amazing tech demo. Real Cyberpunk feeling, with all these reflections and light effects from vehicles, video monitors in a dark and rainy night. I saw that video and think: "Is that Unity?!"

@ 5 Lives = Is it possible to get more wallpapers with the artworks from the char classes, please? I love them and need new wallpapers for my 2 displays at office :D

    13. Razor on

Looks good, but what's even more impressive is the background audio!!

Much better than that dubstep on the intro video.

    14. Edswor on

Looks awesome. At the end the best next engine will be Unity and all this kind of third party add-ons.

    15. Kristofer on

It really looks amazing! Can't wait to try it out when it's done.

I do have one question: since you have a modular system for the city, does this mean you plan to include modding support for the game? I'm no modder myself, but I'm sure many people would love to create additional content for Satellite Reign. It would also greatly expand the interest and life span of the game long after it's been released :)

    16. Egon L.

I really thought while watching the duration of this new video that perhaps a group of dedicated modders would be keen to build an unofficial videogame (total conversion mod) sequel to the Blade Runner movie (or the book it's based on) using this exact same engine kindly provided by you - the 5 Lives Studios!

It's been my pleasure to be learning more as well as reflecting back your passion for the making of this game. After some rumblings from other people about how that Shadowrun Returns game was really designed for the iPhones all along, I'm glad to see that both this and Jagged Alliance: Flashback (also backed) will be designed solely for the computing platforms only!

Hope we make it to the environmental destruction. Combined with the "sandbox" model, it will be a *very* interesting game. (Sure, you can use terrain for short term advantage during combat .. and sometimes with long-term consequences).

      My eyes literately just orgasmed!

    23. VitruvianGeek on

That is a very impressive tech demo. As Ber says, a means of rendering relflections really well is perfect for a cyberpunk game, with all the brooding scenes of rain soaked night time streets and neon advertising that are so emblematic of the genre. This, paired with the first stretch goal guaranteeing excellent musical scoring and sound design, should add up to an extremely immersive game world.

    24. Narq on

      This looks spectacular!

    25. Petr Vorel on

It's really good to see my little language (Czech) on the list, but I'm gonna play it in English anyway. I appreciate you included it but I am not quite sure if it is worth the additional effort. Instead of translations it might be better to spend the time on other things more important for the game.

    26. Casus Belli

      Great demo, thanks.

Qestion about localisation: will all languages be included in the same game version or will we need to specify a localised version in the survey?

    27. Necdet Orkun Osken on

That is great, but I hope environmental damage can be achieved as it would be a great addition for a game like this, it can allow for different approaches and tactics on missions :)

    28. Zombra on

Thank you for spelling "peek" correctly in the update. Please inform whoever sent out the email; they spelled it wrong :P

    29. Ber on

Wow, very nice lighting/reflection system. And perfect for a cyberpunk game too since the signature scene is nighttime rain with neon signs everywhere :)

    30. DaZMaN76 on

Oh balls to it, I'm not happy with missing Alpha access - have my monies 5LS :D lol

Lovely video guys, that's looking gorgeous indeed! Excellent work by Bruno with the reflection system. You've convinced me to restart my own Unity efforts and Mr. Wobbly may yet be making a re-appearance :)

    31. Wim Jansen

      Wow, looks nice!
Glad those servers are ZX81's and not the slower ZX80's :-)

    32. Max Goldstein on

Seconding the questions regarding paypal and stretch goals after the KS deadline. You guys have worked up an incredible amount of momentum and I'd hate to see it cut short before the game world expansion goals.

Looks great! Might just have to up my pledge to get alpha access.

    33. Blackstaff on

      That's looking awesome !

RE : localisation : Localisation is a platform stretch goal. It's tough to go through, but once it's down, it often causes an upstick of pledges. I mean, obviously you won't buy something you can't play because you don't have the right platform, but you too won't buy something you can't enjoy because it's not in your language.

I always say the same thing to the devs : if your project is ambitious enough, you need the support of international backers to reach it. So you need to integrate the cost of localisation in your primary goal from the get go, instead of having to pass by the proverbial egoistical childishness of the internet.

    34. Lord_Grax on

      Thats an amazing video guys!!
Great work once again. Every update I keep being amazed by the work 5LS continues to produce.
      As Dablue said below, Jawdropping!!

      Love it :)

Hello 5 Lives studios. I have a few questions about Paypal vs kickstarter.

      1) Is there a deadline for Paypal or would it be possible to up the level of the pledge after the Kickstarter completes.

      2) Would I be able to increase my Kickstarter pledge after the deadline via paypal? (similar to how Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen use their own site to manage their backers pledges)

On a side note I am really glad to hear that paypal also contributes towards the stretch goals, will that continue post kickstarter deadline or will features be locked in at that point regardless of additional funding via Paypal?

Finally, I know that Kickstarter take 5 or 10% or so of the final amount, is paypal similar or are their fees less onerous? In other words, where would my pledge help Satellite Reign the most?

Best of luck for the rest of the Kickstarter!

    36. F.Manuel on

Amazing! Now it is quite cruel that you leave us more than a year waiting for tihis game!
I am truly curious about how the localization will work: do you use "professional" duping studios located in Australia for this work? Will it be a full localization (written and spoken language)? I am not sure if you ever talked about spoken passages in the game, so sorry about this question :]
I am gonna play the game in English anyway, if you need help for the Italian or German version I know some professional italian/german native speaking copywriter (just written text tho)

    37. Maalak on

Is there a deadlne for the Paypal crowdfunding ?
And is there any way to know how much you have obtained thanks to Paypal ?
