About this project

On a cold December morning in 1974, Paul Allen stared in astonishment at the cover of the magazine he held in his hands. It featured a breakthrough product billed as “World’s First Minicomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models.” The image below the sensational title was that of the Altair 8800. Never mind that it was actually just an empty box with nothing behind the lights and switches arrayed on the front panel. Or that there was no software. That didn’t matter. What Allen saw was opportunity. He showed the magazine to his friend, a Harvard undergrad named Bill Gates. There it was, right before his startled eyes: the dawn of personal computing. And they were there to meet it. In short order, they contacted the machine’s maker, MITS, and convinced the company that they had developed a BASIC interpreter that could be used on the Altair. Although they had done nothing of the sort, MITS was intrigued, and the young men set to work on producing what they had promised. Neither Allen nor Gates had even seen an Altair, but, nevertheless, within a few weeks, the pair delivered their program to MITS. The first time they’d have the opportunity to test their BASIC would be during their presentation to the company; if something in the code was faulty, now would be the time they’d discover it. Amazingly, it worked. And the rest, as they say, is history. Within a year, Gates had dropped out of Harvard, and he and Allen had founded Microsoft. Oh, the name of the magazine? Popular Electronics, of course—the “magazine that changed the world!”

Now that’s the power of the press! Throughout its golden years, the legendary Popular Electronics inspired many such beginnings. Indeed, a cover story in the magazine could launch a company. You might be surprised to learn, however, that the magazine ceased publication only a few years ago. But all is not lost, because we’ve acquired the Popular Electronics title with an exciting plan to revive it in world-class desktop, tablet (iPad), and special print editions. That’s where we can really use your help! With your backing and support, we can bring this dearly missed and much-needed magazine back to life.

Imagine once again a magazine dedicated to restoring a true sense of wonder about how things work—and then showing you step-by-step how to do it yourself—just like the original Popular Electronics did every month for nearly fifty years. And likewise, for the tech-curious to the hands-on professional, we’ve put together an electrifying editorial plan, complete with fantastic DIY projects, plus deep coverage of everything from game-changing emerging technologies to a look back at looking forward with amazing retrotronics. Every issue full of features that are as entertaining as they are practical and inspiring. Through imaginative, engaging, and insightful journalism, we can, with your generous support, restore Popular Electronics to its rightful glory as the go-to source for compelling, relevant, and just plain cool electronics-focused content.

And with many of the magazine's original writers already onboard, we’ll be lighting a fire and inspiring the next generation of innovators—perhaps even you. In the meantime, if you’ve got a great story idea, we want to hear about it. Just shoot us an email from the PopularElectronicsMagazine.com Web site. (We’ll even be featuring many of the amazing electronics projects you’ll find right here on kickstarter.com!)

Along with our world-class team, your backing will give us just the kick-start we need to do all this and more. And we’ve got some excellent rewards for you when we reach our goal, like free subscriptions, cool mobile apps, and some very special recognitions. Come along and help us get there—the next world-changing breakthrough just might be riding on it!

Note: Popular Electronics will publish bi-monthly in 2011, going to monthly in 2012. Look for the premier issue to become available about eight weeks following the funding close.
