A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
These days we're all short of time and we're all trying to live healthier. But with today's backpacks, running or cycling to work weighs you down, restricts you, causes chronic back and shoulder problems, and is downright uncomfortable. It's time for a revolution in backpack design.
MotionLab bags are a complete innovation in backpack design, working with the human body, rather than constraining it.
Our award-winning bags use patented technology to place all of the load on your hips (where you're strong) and lifting it completely clear of your shoulders and spine (where you're weak), while moving the same way your own body moves.
We've created an entirely new experience in comfort and freedom of movement, with all the accompanying health benefits of improved posture and reduced back and shoulder strain.
What makes our bags unique is their comfort and carrying performance. But to create the best Active Commuter bag ever made we added in styling, functionality and features so you can run or cycle into work with laptop and everything you need for the office, and keep enjoying it's beautiful design once you get there too.
“Earlier this year we did a test of wearable bags for cyclists … if this new bag from MotionLab had been available at the time, we suspect it would have walked it” Bikes Etc Magazine June 2018
“The Result is almost magical ... huge freedom of movement, a sweat-free back and because the weight is focussed down through your core, greater stability on the bike.” Bikes Etc Magazine June 2018
“I felt completely free and it didn’t compromise the way I run” Revee Walcott-Nolan, Team GB 800m runner
“With all the weight taken off your shoulders … and lots of storage space then this is the perfect active commuting bag for you. I’m only small framed but this bag felt comfortable and really supportive” Helen Finch, @framefitnesssouthampton
“This is genuine innovation in rucksack design, and really clever” Sir Ranulph Fiennes, legendary explorer
“I loved the pack and I found it really does what it says!" "… a fantastic product for any one who runs or cycles to work, I didn’t feel restricted in any way and … it felt like I wasn’t carrying much at all ... This bag is going to be a game changer" Jacinta Pearson, @thisgirlrunswild
“Absolutely amazing. It’s completely stuck to my spine. There’s not any weight on my shoulders at all” Amy Carsen, amateur marathon runner
“First 12 mile commute with the @motionlabbags and it felt ace! ... Love the unique storage design how the shoes go in at the bottom of the bag too" . Gary Schroeder, @cyclingboylondon
See how our unique frame, patented wraparound harness, and flexible spine combine to produce these amazing results.
Carries everything you need for your commute and for in the office too, with separate compartments for work, clothing and shoes.
Reflective zips ensure you are seen at night without affecting the bag's stylish design during the day. We're proposing to add reflectives to the base, rear and shoulder of pack for 360 visibility at night when running or cycling through busy streets.
Paul Goss, of BodyLogic Physiotherapy in Battersea is a physio and run-coach helping people avoid injury and improve their performance.
Paul also did a detailed video gait analysis of runners with/without packs and comparing them to the MotionLab bag. His findings were that MotionLab bags:
encouraged a better, more upright running posture, improving running technique and reducing strain on the spine and joints.
gave great freedom of movement and unsurpassed comfort
moved with your trunk as you move but with greater stability that other bags, preventing the over-rotation typically resulting from running with a backpack. As a result Motionlab packs can help avoid the dreaded "twisting" (arms and feet crossing the body's centre-line) which inhibits many runners' performance.

Our Testers are all shapes and sizes. It's really important that our bag fits well, so we made the Flexible Spine length fully adjustable to fit anyone whether you're 5 foot tall like Amy here, or 6'3" like Dale. Plenty of length in the straps fits any body shape and strap tidies mean there's no loose strap ends to worry about. We'll send a complete fitting guide when you receive the bag to ensure you get your perfect fit.

MotionLab-bags was born out of the frustration I felt when I tried running home one day from work and found my lightweight pack bouncing uncomfortably on my shoulders. Playing around with the straps I found crossing them around my chest made the bag more comfortable.
That was 8 years ago. We've come a long way from building prototypes in my kitchen. While learning from experts in various fields about how the human body moves, where it carries load best, and what constrains it (... and what frees it) I realised that while materials have improved, the fundamental load-carry design of backpacks hasn't changed in over 50 years. Our knowledge of the human body has improved so much in that time, why hasn't rucksack technology?
The answer, I learnt, is that only by combining several different innovations can you produce something truly ground-breaking in its performance. Each discovery was hard earned through designing, building, testing, getting feedback and often heading straight back to the drawing board. Even once we'd nailed the structural design there was much work to be done to answer questions like how to let the bag stand upright on its own. Our 2018 Industrial Product Gold Award from Creative Pool was the ultimate realisation of a dream to create a bag that is not just a clever concept but really delivers for people in their everyday needs.
Since then I'm happy to say we've developed a fantastic core team of Product designers, materials experts, bag designers, marketers, Physios, and had indirect support from too many people to name. UK has a thriving network of innovators and manufacturing expertise and it's been a delight to work with all these people.
Right now we're all about getting the MotionLab Active Commute bag out to our backers as soon as possible, and making sure you get a product that will delight every time you use it. Looking to the future we intend to expand our product range into 70 litre trekking bags, trail packs, ski bags, climbing bags, school bags for kids, baby carriers, and anywhere our technology can help people move better. We're excited to be starting this journey. It's been an adventure already, and we look forward to you coming along with us for the ride.

Risks and challenges
Our bag is a technical product. It's taken years of development to get right and we've exhaustively tested it with people of all shapes and sizes to be sure it will deliver for you. We are extremely confident in our prototypes and you are welcome to attend any of the events we run in order to test them out (check out upcoming events on our website www.motionlab-bags.com).
The biggest risk we now face is production. With product design company IdeaReality we built our prototypes with large-scale production in mind. We have engaged a UK agent with excellent relationships with factories in China, extensive experience in this area, and appropriate quality control procedures in place.
There is still the risk that unforeseen issues may impact production and/or delivery and we have chosen the December target delivery date to include some margin for error.
We don't answer to any other investors, so you, our backers, are the people who are bringing this project to life. We are absolutely dedicated to deliver you the best active commute bag the world has ever seen. We promise to keep you all fully informed as we progress through production stages towards delivery.
