Free Wallpaper (1 of 10)

So I've made a decision regarding updates for the near future. In order to avoid that feeling I talked about where I don't update if I don't have something concrete to show you guys, I'm going to start releasing the wallpapers that I've already completed—one new wallpaper every time I don't have anything else to deliver. I have five of them already (mostly) done from before I got hurt, and I had been waiting until they were all finished before releasing them. But I recently realized I don't need to wait, right? So here's the first wallpaper:

It's called, "No Encounters Today," and you can download it in a variety of sizes at this page on the GiantITP website. If you have any suggestions for other sizes and/or croppings you'd like to see, just leave a Comment on this update and I'll see what I can do.

As far as other work, this past week was a week of packing and shipping, mostly. I packed up about 200 autographed packages, mostly in the Stick It to You, Patience for an Art Print, and Patience for a Book reward levels. The majority of the autographed (non-crayon) packages left are the Patience for the Whole Story boxes, which are slow to get out because not only do they require me to sign seven books per customer, but they're big and bulky and don't fit too many in my car per trip. I also finished some more digital portraits and plugged away at Haleo and Julelan—which is ending up much longer than planned, surprising exactly no one. Here's the Workometer:

As you can see, it doesn't look like much even though it took a lot of time; hence the wallpaper release. But hey, now you have something to look forward to next time—either a PDF or another wallpaper! Until then, thanks for your continued support and patience.

Is the adddress still being checked? I haven't heard back since March, when my order was apparently waiting at Ookoodook to be shipped.

    2. Creator M Lindner on July 24, 2013

Kinda wondering here, weren't updates (to the Kickstarter stuff, I know the comic updates are nice) supposed to be more frequent with the wallpapers to throw in if there was nothing else to show or tell? I trust you to keep it coming, eventually, but it has been quite some time (and summer for the summer minis will only last so long).

    3. Creator Kevin Bruckert on July 19, 2013

For those of us who have large patience orders, is it possible for us to get our "extras" sometime soon? It doesn't seem right that we can't even play "Sticky Schticks" in the same *year* as other backers. :(

    4. Creator opheliar on June 19, 2013

      Thanks Rich. It's beautiful.

As far as I'm concerned, you don't need to apologize for stuff being later than you anticipated. The quality of the work more than makes up for it, and I realize the thumb injury has to be quite difficult to work with. The periodic updates are appreciated though. I get ridiculously excited whenever I see a OOTS kickstarter update in my inbox.

      Also: the Belkar pdf? awesomesauce.

    5. Creator Mackenzie Salt on June 15, 2013

I would like to second the vote for 1600x900 as it is the largest resolution for a majority of 17" laptops (which is what I use). I love the wallpaper and can't wait for the others. I have a dual monitor setup but the two monitors are different aspect ratios so I am going to love mixing and matching the OOTS wallpapers :) Great work, Rich!

    6. Creator Jonathan Leggo on June 11, 2013

Thanks so much, and thanks for including us lonely Windows phone users.
I'm so happy with it, sometimes I turn on my phone just to look at the new wallpaper :)

    7. Creator Daryl Putman on June 10, 2013

Is it acceptable to use a photo/poster printing service to get a poster copy of this (just for ones self)? They say they need written permission.

    8. Creator Joel on June 7, 2013

What about a 1080x1920 version for Android? My new phone is actually that res and it looks a little odd using the 1920x1080 pc version, since it's at a 90 degree angle.

    9. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 7, 2013

@Dennis McDonald: an 1280x1024 version is listed on the download page (5x4 Miscellaneous)

    10. Creator Dennis McDonald on June 7, 2013

Any chance this can come in 1280 x 1024?

    11. Creator Eric Shields on June 6, 2013

Very nice Rich! You've done an amazing job of keeping the ideas and content rolling while dealing with the insane amount of logistics for what you offered. Every time I see an update for this pop up I think "Holy crap, that's right. We get MORE stuff from Rich still!" :D

      Best $300 I ever pledged!

    12. Creator Adam Rausch on June 6, 2013

My awesome Patience package showed up today! Thanks Rich! And I set the wallpappaer as my background, love all of your work. Thanks again.

    13. Creator Sean Wix on June 6, 2013

      Could you do a 4K version? 3840x2160. :D

    14. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 6, 2013

@Remy Monsen: I think it isn't necessary to enforce some arbitrary rule to the rest of the wallpapers. I think it is better to that some wallpaper maybe have other benefits. Not all will be pleased by this layout, so I would prefer if there is maybe more of a mix. I'm for spreading the fun, so even if I don't have use for some of the wallpapers, I think it has it's good if most people find at least something they can use/find great.

    15. Creator Remy Monsen on June 6, 2013

Just wanted to say that the content of this wallpaper is positioned perfectly for rotating displays.

I have a Surface pro, with a 1920x1080 resolution screen, but when you turn it to portrait mode, the screen switches to 1080x1920 instead (obviously). Windows' default behavior is to rotate the wallpaper so it is still the correct side up, zoom the wallpaper so it fills the screen, and then center it. So, in landscape mode, I see the entire wallpaper as intended, but because of the positioning of the elements, when I turn it to portrait mode this zooming/cropping means that the entire OotS party just manages to fit on the screen (along with a few monsters).

In other words, because of the position and size of the central element (the party), this wallpaper works absolutely perfectly with rotating displays (at least those with a 16:9 ratio). Please consider this element when making the rest of the wallpapers as well.

    16. Creator Rick on June 6, 2013

@Red I believe that's the conceptualization/planning stage. Green is the execution stage.

    17. Creator Red XIV on June 5, 2013

Remind me again, what do the yellow bars on the Workometer signify?

    18. Creator Jake Morse on June 5, 2013

Is there a possibility of getting a version of the image that is the whole image with cropping or letter boxing, Just for viewing? Or, could it end up as a splash page in an upcoming book?

    19. Creator John Thompson 2 on June 5, 2013

Oh... would love to see 2560x1600, but I can certainly crop/shrink or crop/grow one of the "close" sizes.

And you have the iPad retina resolution! Fantastic!

    20. Creator John Thompson 2 on June 5, 2013

      My Patience was Rewarded!!!!!!!!!
Got out of the hospital, came home, and my signed print was delivered this afternoon!

And (probably just "in there" or because I'd added for the... I forget which), it included a coloring book, bringing my total to three, so I can consider giving two of them away to a friend's two young kids.

      Thank you, Rich!!!!!

    21. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 5, 2013

@Adam Borowski: I think this is a wallpaper that crops really well to other ratios. Even if you take the middle slice from the 16:9 version you can get an 9:16 version with the complete Order. Sure you have much more less monster/npcs, but I think it works extremely well. (And in such thing like wallpapers, I think "average error" is a metric without any value. The only thing I care about is how good the wallpaper looks. if I can choose between a bunch of awesome wallpapers, with some of them being cropped/letterboxed (albeit I prefer cropped to letterboxed) and a bunch of wallpapers with filler material that nobody cares if it is missing so that cropping doesn't matter - I would prefer the first bunch. And after getting this I think Rich knows how to make an awesome wallpaper. It really doesn't matter if there is some other version with a bit more stuff, when the version I use is still awesome)

    22. Creator Adam Borowski on June 4, 2013

@Rich: my point is, starting from a ratio in the middle produces far smaller average error.

@Double Monitors: while I use two myself, I can't think of a wallpaper that would look good with the gap inside. So they'd be separate images. And then, you'd need to handle other popular setups: three, four, six. That way lies madness.

    23. Creator Rick on June 4, 2013

@Rich re: Double Monitors. Doesn't need to be a special thing maybe. Thinking it might be possible to plan two (or even three! squee!) of the wallpapers that you haven't done yet as one continuous wallpaper left-to-right, that still make sense/look good when split into three separate wallpapers. Maybe with each of the panel featuring different characters? Just to toss ideas out, maybe the LG on the left, the Order in the center, and various "name" NPCs on the right? With a continuous background? Would be really cool, but definitely just a nice to have. Am completely happy and satisfied with what's on my desktop now (still smile when I see Durkon and his expression when I minimize my Excel spreadsheets). Thank you!

    24. Creator shadws on June 4, 2013

Can we please get a 2560 x 1600 resolution for this wallpaper and others in the future? Native resolution for my 30in monitor. Which I realise isn't going to be a super common requirement, but I'm sure there are a few people out there in the same boat as me. Cheers!

    25. Creator EnvoyPV on June 4, 2013

My new wallpaper makes me happy whenever my windows are minimized. :-)

    26. Creator Rich Burlew on June 4, 2013

Will work on some of these tonight, so check back later.
@Everyone with Double Monitors: I didn't know that was enough of a thing. I don't think I can adapt this one, but maybe some of the other wallpapers can be made that way. I'll think about it.
@Adam Borowski: There's no such thing as a "neutral" size. Everyone has different monitors, somebody is going to get cropped or letterboxed (or both) no matter what proportions I make the original. It will matter less with some of the other designs, but my first goal on this one was to make a good picture, and that dictated the proportions.
      @Ian Babineau: A monster.

    27. Creator Becky on June 4, 2013

Thanks for keekping us in the loop. I have never been so happy for delayed delivery dates ever! The wallpaper is all kinds of cool. It gives me the giggles everytime I look at it.

    28. Creator Ian Babineau on June 4, 2013

First of all an awesome wallpaper. Never really game much thought to what they would look like, but now I'm eager for the other nine.

Just one question: What is that red-eyed furry creature in the tree to the right of Roy, about 15-20 feet up in the air (above the orc with the stone axe)? I think I can identify everything else, but I'm not sure what that is.

    29. Creator Timothy Simon on June 4, 2013

I too would love it if multiple monitor support could be added for a future wallpaper.

Common examples being 3200x1200 (two 1600x1200 monitors side by side), 3840x1200(1920x1200) and 3840x1080(1920x1080).

If not I completely understand due to the extra work, but my work computer has two monitors and could use a great wallpaper. Either way, thanks for all you do!

    30. Creator Dein on June 4, 2013

@Sarah Vee: Ah, I see. Thanks for the heads up!

    31. Creator Ben Norris on June 4, 2013

A customer will soon forgive you for shipping good stuff later than you promised but will never forgive you for shipping bad stuff on time. ;-)

    32. Creator Sarah Vee on June 4, 2013

@Dein: IIRC, the crayon drawings are more difficult on his thumb than the digital drawings are, so they're waiting till he's got the easier digital rewards done.

    33. Creator Dein on June 4, 2013

Are the individual crayon drawings being left for last? I don't mind waiting, just curious.

    34. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 4, 2013

@MartectX: downscaling is easy (or is easy if you know anything about working with pictures), but nevertheless I think there are some that would screw that up (also even with downscaling you might loss some quality compared to that what Rich would give) so I think it is great costumer service to provide more of that. (And getting another resolution altogether is harder, because then you need to crop the image - with the hardest part being find the right position to crop. I think my cropped 720x1280 from the 1440x1280 is fine - but if Rich would provide one, I would use that).

@QDQQ: 1366x768 is essentially 16:9, so simple use (or downscale if necessary) a larger 16:9 one gets the job done. (If you just it as a desktop wallpaper you normally even need to downscale it manually, simple choose 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 and set it to Zoom (or whatever your Operating System calls it) and it works perfectly fine - I'm doing the same))

    35. Creator MartectX on June 4, 2013

Looking at this resolution madness, the Giant would be better off just linking Gimp and posting a resize guide...

    36. Creator QDQQ on June 4, 2013

Hey, can we get one for 1366x768?

    37. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 4, 2013

@NorthernDruid: you could try a better resolution 16:9 version (or just downscale it) [since the Vita claims to be 16:9 it should work with 16:9 - but I wonder why it has 4px more height than 16:9 would normally have]

    38. Creator Nick on June 4, 2013

Oh, wow! What a wonderful treat! Thank you so much, Rich! I *love* that "HD" look--like OotS on blu-ray.

    39. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 4, 2013

Some typo: the 2880x1800 (16:10) file is linked/listed as 2800x1800 at the download page.
(And minor nitpick: I find it a bit strange that 2 of three android file names are listed at screen resolution and 1 is listed with actual image resolution (which I think is better) - but since the file names are more or less irrelevant, it doesn't really matter)

    40. Creator NorthernDruid on June 4, 2013

PSVita resolution (960x544) would be neat.

    41. Creator Christian Steudtner on June 4, 2013

This wallpaper is really awesome (much more awesomer than I ever imagined an OotS wallpaper)!

On the Android Phone topic: I only use it as a lock-screen wallpaper (my phone desktop has to many icons/widgets to support a picture), so I cropped it to the actual screen resolution (720x1280)

    42. Creator Andreas Kaiser on June 4, 2013

I would also love to see a two monitor wallpaper, like some other backers mentioned.

    43. Creator Adam Borowski on June 4, 2013

Rich: could you crop aspect ratios better than 16:9 some other way than to match height? The current way loses content, trying to shoehorn it into one of extremes. It's kind of like some bad video games that make 4x3 and 16x10 lose FOV instead of showing more vertically compared to the narrow strip of 16x9.

Obviously, it can't be changed after the fact if the source artwork has been drawn as a narrow 16x9 strip, but for future wallpapers, could you please draw them in a more neutral format? Unlike starting from an extreme, it would make other formats lose less.

    44. Creator DivNull Productions on June 4, 2013

      Love the purple worm.

    45. Creator Cody Auter on June 4, 2013

      Thanks Rich!
Got my Patience package just a few days ago, and I almost can't believe how excited I was for it.
'Course, a lot of that had to do with the missus waiting for it as well so she could begin reading OOTS. Luckily, I already bought the other books you have out, so she can catch up quickly!

    46. Creator Sean Knisely on June 4, 2013

@Rick That would be cool for sure (Twin 1080p monitors aren't that uncommon are they?) Maybe two of the Wallpapers could be a series that would look good if you stapled them together. (I'm thinking like those old school G.I Joe puzzles that all fit together to make one giant puzzle.)

    47. Creator Murat Öğüt on June 4, 2013

@Michael. Just use 1920x1080 version. I am currently using a 1360x768 monitor (my laptop monitor is broken), and my wallpaper is 1900x1064. Use "Fill" option in the Personalization->Desktop Background menu.
But you still want a 1360x768 wallpaper, here my quick edit:

    48. Creator Rick on June 4, 2013

Thanks Rich, looks great on my twin 1920x1080 monitors! I can dream about a 3840x1080 continuous OOTS wallpaper, but unlikely to have too many people interested in that so not worth the trouble. I'm perfectly happy with two of the same, and will switch to two different ones once the next one comes out. :D

    49. Creator KBowz on June 4, 2013

I don't see standard VESA 1024x768. Is it possible to get that without resizing and distorting another resolution?

    50. Creator William Ashley on June 4, 2013

Can we have a 1600x900? Both the 1920x1080 and 2560x1440 wind up tragically jaggy when scaled.
