The I-Don't-Have-My-Books-Yet Update

Hey guys. I know a lot of you have been waiting for an update on my thumb, which I've posted over on the main Giant in the Playground website (short version: cast off, splint on, starting physical therapy but can't draw yet). This update won't really be as much about that, but about a piece of business that I actually can do now that I can type normally for short bursts: making sure that everyone has their books. I once said that there would be a time to contact me if you didn't have your books, and that time is now.

If you got your books already, and there were no problems with what you received, then that's great news and you can skip down to the last paragraph (after the dashed line). Otherwise, read on. Below are five categories of people who don't have the right books yet, along with (in some cases) new special email addresses to use in letting us know. Please read each category fully and ONLY email the single category that best matches your situation. In most cases, I would like you to contact us at this time even if you previously have sent me an email or message on the subject. Because I was out-of-commission for a while, it's hard to know whether someone who emailed me in September is still waiting for their package or if they got it since then.

Misplaced Orders

These are the orders where something happened that prevented your reward from leaving the warehouse. It may be that the order fell through the cracks, or it may be that the email did and it's already on its way. Either way, this is you if all of the following are true:

  • You did NOT get a package at all.
  • You did NOT get a shipping email from Ookoodook.
  • You DID fill out a survey with your address.
  • Your reward level does not include autographed products or original art.

If all those facts are true, email my assistant at, even if you had previously contacted me about your package. Please include your Kickstarter account name and your backer reward level (i.e. "$25 art print package"); if you had previously contacted me about your package, mention that as well.

Lost Packages

These are orders where the package was mailed, but it hasn't gotten to you yet. It is far more common for international orders, and resolving it may require action on your part (such as contacting your nation's customs office, where your box may be sitting). Still, we want provide whatever assistance we can (and be sure that it hasn't been returned to us). This is you if all of the following are true:

  • You did NOT get a package at all.
  • You DID get a shipping email from Ookoodook.
  • You DID fill out a survey with your address.
  • Your reward level does not include autographed products or original art.

If all those facts are true, email my assistant at even if you had previously contacted me about it. Please include your Kickstarter account name, your backer reward level (i.e. "$25 art print package"), and the tracking number provided in Ookoodook's email to you. As above, if you had previously contacted me about your package, say so and mention any previous attempts to resolve the issue. Note that in the case of packages that were mailed but then returned to Ookoodook due to an incorrect address or similar not-their-fault problem, they may have to charge an additional shipping fee to resend.

No Survey

Believe it or not, there are still almost a hundred people who have not filled out a survey with their shipping information. This is you if all of the following are true:

  • You did NOT fill out a survey with your mailing address.
  • Your reward level does not include autographed products or original art.

All of these customers have been contacted via email at least once, but many have yet to respond. You can either log in and fill out the survey on this site or email with your Kickstarter account name, backer reward level, and any extras you might have added to your order above and beyond the base price. Our next step will be to publish an alphabetical list of all the account names that haven't responded, because we need all outstanding surveys before the end of the year.

Wrong Stuff

You opened the box, and it had the wrong stuff in it. This is you if all of the following are true:

  • You DID get a package from Ookoodook.
  • The contents of that package were either incorrect or incomplete.
  • Your reward level does not include autographed products or original art.

If all those facts are true, contact me through the Kickstarter "contact me" link located to the right of the Kickstarter page, next to Elan's picture. If you've already done so and haven't yet gotten your corrected items, feel free to do so again (though I haven't gotten through all the corrections from the last month, and some that I have are still in the mail). You won't need to include your account name or backer reward level; that info is provided automatically when you use the Kickstarter messaging system.

Autographed Books or Art

Your ordered something that requires two working thumbs. This is you if all of the following are true:

  • Your reward level includes an autographed product or original art.

Unfortunately, these orders are just stuck. I can't hold a marker right now, much less sign my name or draw a picture. Even if you got an incorrect package or your package got lost in the mail, I can't make a replacement for it until my thumb heals up in a few weeks. So to keep things streamlined, I ask that anyone whose package includes autographs to please hold off on contacting me about fixing any problems until such time as I ask for that information. Thanks. (Oh, and to those of you who got the rest of their stuff but got I.O.U.'s for Sticky Shticks: Those should get out before the end of the year even if I can't sign my name.)

That should be every possible category of "straggler" left. If you somehow fall into a different situation, continue to use the Kickstarter messaging system to contact me directly.

Finally, here's that last paragraph for everyone who has their books: I'm back to work on what I can do to get some more of the digital rewards out. It's mostly just writing at this stage; I have no idea if I'll even be drawing by the end of the year. And if I am, I have to bring back the regular updated comic before I finish any new rewards. But the digital content WILL get out, even if I have to retrain the way I draw to do it. All I ask is that you have patience with me and my thumb until then. Thanks for all that you've shown so far.

P.S. I mentioned this in the News update I linked at the top of the page, but: I grew up in NJ and lived most of my adult life in NY, so I would be remiss not to point you to the American Red Cross and ask you to donate to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy, if you haven't already done so through other means (or even if you have). Or consider a donation to the efforts of the Humane Society to help care for the stranded pets of evacuated residents and reunite them with their owners. Or give to the Community Food Bank of NJ, if you want. Whatever makes you most comfortable. But they're getting hit by a winter storm again tonight, so there's going to be more need before this is over.

Yup! Sorry for replying so late... but yeah, that's exactly it. It's not a screw-up, just a small delay, no worries about it :)

With as many backers as there are, it's totally understandable that a few things would slip through the cracks. Keep up the good work, and good luck on your recovery, Rich!

I got my stuff, got it in perfect condition, and just wanted to stop by and thank everyone (incl. backers). This is awesome. Rich, hope you recover soon!

I didn't hear back about change of address for the "autograph" category, so I'm gonna go with the "wait and see" option lol.
Worst case scenario, it gets shipped to my sister instead of my new house.

    5. Heather Griffin on November 8, 2012

Hmm, well it definitely still bounced, so it wasn't just a fluke. But I tried sending it from a different e-mail account (gmail instead of my college .edu account) and that seems to have made it through. Perhaps is bouncing e-mails from particular domains? Anyway, glad to have gotten an e-mail through, hopefully mine is just an isolated incident.

    6. Rich Burlew Creator on November 8, 2012

@Heather Griffin: The email is definitely working, I've gotten over 100 emails to it so far, some of them within the last hour. Maybe it was a momentary hiccup. If anyone else gets a failed delivery message, let me know.

    7. Heather Griffin on November 8, 2012

Uh-oh, just tried to send an e-mail to but got back a failed delivery message. I guess I'll have to use the "Contact Me" button after all? I am a "misplaced order" as I haven't received a package or a shipping e-mail yet :(

Glad the cast is off, now please take as long as you need to recover - we'd rather have you get better than try to cut down the time before the next update and have you damage your hand further. And with a comic this good, we're definitely willing to wait as long as it takes to find out what happens next...

      Giant, back in action! w00t!

I'm just glad to hear things are going better. The quality of your content has always paid off for any wait we have had to endure and I am certain that will continue to be true. Work as you are comfortable with doing so and challenge yourself as you see fit, but don't rush on our account.

Dear Rich, Best wishes for getting well!
And best greetings to your wife and thanks to her for supporting you!
Though I am eager as everyone else for comics I fully support it that health comes first!!
After all I have a PATIENCE package. When it comes I will enjoy it :-)

    15. Shannon Davis-Richardson on November 7, 2012

Please consider reading about the HSUS at before donating to them! They are not what they appear to be!!!

Autograph alternatives! Rich, glad to hear you are healing and taking the time you need. I have a patience package, but I'd have to fish through my email to see if anything was autographed. Regardless, I'd like to mention that for me and perhaps many readers the actual scribbling isn't nearly as interesting as the personal connection. Personally I'm fine with no autographs, (save your hands for your creative work!) but for those who still want them, perhaps an alternative would be fine? I'd take a splinted-thumb-splotch any day, or a photo, a left handed crayon scribble, or anything similar over forcing you to fuss with faulty equipment (e.g. the hand). Just a thought!

Incredibly glad to hear you're on the mend, My. Giant. Please take all the time you need. Health comes first (as I'm being told IRL after my own operation) and your work is always worth the wait, nevertheless.

Glad process of healing is going well for you. Here's a little story for you as you go through the healing process.

I once had surgery on my wrist, this was shortly after I got married. I was in splint for a long time before during our engagement. Then there was the period with the bandages.

Needless to say by the time the bandages came off and I began physical therapy my wrist was very weak. I remember one physical therapy session in particular. My newlywed wife came with me to this appointment. This is was the first time the therapist had me start lifting weights, as such he just started me out with a 1lb weight.

So there I am with this great woman, who I just promised to protect and provide for trying to lift this one pound weight. I couldn't even get it off the table. I'm straining and doing everything I can to get this off the table and in I didn't get it off the table that day.

Needless to say, it set a great tone for our marriage of humility.

Anyway, just wanted to share with you while you go through this. Hope your recovery is speedy!

Thanks for the update, Rich, and I hope the PT goes well.
For those of us who are in the categories that include autographed 8x10 prints + "all the swag that goes with them", is there any way that all of the non-thumb-requiring-swag can be shipped now (magnets, stickers, hit point pads, coloring books, sticky shticks, patches, etc.) with the thumb-requiring bits to come separately later, or is that just too much hassle to manage? (I'm "Stick it to you", but this question applies to all the signed 8x10 prints)

You don't worry about us, once again. We know that this must be incredibly hard for you, and we want to let you know to not get down about "letting us down" because the simple truth of the matter is that you aren't, and you shan't. You do wonderful work and are a great person, so please don't feel down on account of us. In fact, feel awesome because you are starting to get better, and while the process might take a while, we would rather you take a long time to get as close to normal as possible, than rush things and potentially hurt yourself again. Listen to that lovely wife of yours, and your doctors, and here in a few months you will be back doing your thing. As always, you have the full support of the playground, I can say that with no doubts in my mind. Prayers and love to you Rich.

    26. Vlad Staicu on November 7, 2012

Rich, I won't bother you with a personal email, because you'll be getting plenty of that. I am, however, keen on telling you how incredibly glad I am to have recently received and already read the two prequel books! Your books are my first Kickstarter pledge to arrive and I couldn't be happier with its incredible quality, both in the writing and the looks (amazing glossy cover and it-feels-good-to-turn-them pages!)

I've been wondering though, are these those 50 hues of black-and-white books everyone's been talking about? I believe they are, if the bath scene from OtOoPC is any indication.

Anyway, thank you for your incredible dedication and for the update. Feel free to heal up well, will you!

Even if you are a righty, you may be able to train yourself to use a mouse with your left.
I started myself about 8 years ago with my work mouse on the left and home mouse on the right. I could fumble around correctly in about a week and play an FPS equally well with either in about a month . . . though your mousing precision needs are probably much greater than that.

      Heal well, good sir!

    28. Jen Jahnke on November 7, 2012

Hi Rich -- I just wanted to say I'm glad you are feeling better, and I have received my books, and you have two new fans as a result of them: my husband, who started reading Start of Darkness (not a kickstarter order of mine, but I am still happy he's finally checking out oots) and my best friend, who will be reading them while recovering from brain surgery. She has been really looking forward to starting the books, and I'm glad they are available for her. As someone who is going through rehab himself, I am sure you know how great it is to have something to look forward to for her. Please continue to rest up, don't push yourself too hard, and I look forward to your triumphant return.

Thanks for the update Rich. Was starting to get worried that we hadn't heard from you. After breaking my thumb several years ago, let me just say Physical Therapy might hurt like heck, but it really is your best friend. Work hard in the therapy and do your exercises outside multiple times a day. It really makes a huge difference. Good luck!

You don't mention those of us with Patience packages in your list. I assume we are in with the rest of the autographed books. I'm assuming it will be late Q1 or Q2 of next year?

Thanks for the update. We got our stuff, but have been wondering how your recovering is going. I'm glad to see it's as far along as it is.

I'm not a native NYer, but I've been here since '99, brought along by my husband who is! While we're about five hours away from the city, it is heartwarming to see you include relief links, especially for the furry friends.

May you mend quickly and smoothly!

Like everyone else here I'd like to wish you a speedy recovery. I got my swag pack and the digital content can wait just like the regular comic updates. Get better first and don't force yourself to deliver anything before you are 110% ready... we are all loyal fans and don't mind the wait.

And a note for Mrs. Giant: thanks again for all you are doing to take care of Rich. I know from experience that having a loved one hurting is a sure fire way to max out one's stress levels; so, please, take care of yourself too.

I got a second set of my order from Ookoodook! They said they were having some issues with that and sent me postage to mail it all back.

You mention on your site that physical therapy is your current full time job. To which I say: Thanks! As readers, we wish for your thumb to have a full recovery as much as you do! Please, take all the time you need, and don't do anything that would cause it permanent damage in the name of fulfilling a silly kickstarter. We love you, and are grateful for all you have done for us. Get well soon!

Rich, I wish a _refu'a shleima v'hachachlama mehira_ - that's the Hebrew blessing for a full and speedy recovery.

And let me join the "no rush; get better" chorus. This Kickstarter is chock-full of people who want every awesomeness for you. The only reason I'm hoping for content sooner rather than later is because I know that'd only come from a quicker recovery. Be well, and all the best!

    38. Robert Guthrie on November 7, 2012

Thanks for the update. I'm rooting for you, and am more worried about your recovery than my rewards. Also, I just can't help but quote the Fezzik from The Princess Bride: "You just wiggled your thumb. That doesn't make you happy?"
