At Least It's Not a Pony

We have received reports—scattered at first, but growing in frequency—that backers have begun getting their magnets in the mail. Should this prove true, I can only say that no one is more surprised than I am that we managed to get them into people's hands on time.

This week, we received the 8" x 10" art prints that some of you are getting, and they look great. Here's a sorta-blurry picture of one now:

According to the package tracking oracle that lives in the computer, the embroidered patches arrived in Houston yesterday as well, though I do not have photographic confirmation of that yet. If they're not there already, they will be very soon, which means that the $15 "patch-and-a-magnet" packages will start mailing this week. After those have shipped, all other packages are waiting on the coloring book or the Sticky Shticks (or both). Here's where the Workometer stands:

You'll notice that I've begun work in earnest on the Monster Minis document (at least the Spring edition; the other three seasons that have been promised will get added to the Workometer later). This first installment is shaping up to be include a lot of orcs, fey, goblins (Small, not Medium), animals (dire and regular), druids, and rangers, plus a bunch of other random monsters like an owlbear and a hippogriff. To further whet your appetite, I give you a sneak preview of the art for one of the most tenacious and difficult monsters in the game...the pack mule!

Hey, don't laugh. The number of sessions where I needed a mini for a pack mule (and didn't have one) is far greater than the number of sessions where I needed a mini for a dragon.

Five Things I've Done Since My Last Update:

  • Reviewed and approved physical proofs of the coloring book.
  • Reviewed and approved digital proofs of the updated copyright pages for the reprints.
  • Printed, cut out, and assembled paper mock-ups of the various monster sizes (Tiny through Large) for the miniatures to make sure they stood up properly using regular paper. (I still need to try Huge and Gargantuan.)
  • Picked up the holiday ornaments for the signed ornament reward packages.
  • Started contacting backers who forgot to include money for international shipping in their pledge. This is a big list, though, so if you know you're on it, please be patient and wait for me to contact you.
Have a nice week, everyone, and I'll see you back here when something new has happened.

@Chauncey; believe you'll have to contact Rich directly about that.

    2. Creator Chauncey Hildestad on April 23, 2012

Here's a question, I've recently moved apartments, but I can't find a place to change my address at Kickstarter. Anyone know how that's done?

    3. Creator Michael Truax on April 22, 2012

Oh I'm a confirmed backer; got my magnet holding up an awesome chili recipe. I had every intention of backing for more; I'd have love to had gotten some of the books by backing, but life happened, and all that.

    4. Creator John Thompson on April 22, 2012

Pictures (and therefore frames) are usually different than letter-size paper.

    5. Creator Zack Greenstein on April 21, 2012

The weird part of the art print is that it is smaller than letter paper.

    6. Creator Rich Burlew on April 20, 2012

@Lauren: The paper is 8x10, the printed area is slightly smaller: 9.5" x 7.25".
@Michael Trux: If we have any leftover, we will put them on sale at Ookoodook (for confirmed backers only).

    7. Creator Lauren Sarley on April 19, 2012

I have a question about the print, I glanced through the comments and didn't see anyone ask this yet. Is the actual print area (ink) 8x10 or is the paper 8x10 with a white border, thus making the print (ink) area smaller than 8x10? I only ask since I mean to find a good frame & matte (of proper size) for it before it ships, so I am ready to go.

Or anything else we might want >.> 'cause there is a lot. And my birthday is may 12th... so I might be able to get the fam to give my money for these things >.>

    9. Creator Michael Truax on April 19, 2012

Is there any way to get a hold of one of those prints because, say, you forgot to upgrade your donation when you computer went down?

    10. Creator Maxim Nikolaev on April 18, 2012

Russia here, I got my magnet yesterday. It's quite hefty and looks really trustful.

P.S. I loved the navaho jewelery stamps on the envelope. An unexpected bonus. (=

    11. Creator Uradd on April 17, 2012

Im with Josh on this one, im on the east coast and am still magnetless

    12. Creator Tirus on April 17, 2012

I got my magnet. Just in time to decorate my new fridge. Which has only 1 other magnet. And he's guarding my work schedule instead of the grocery list. But it's not like I ordered a custom Magnet right?
By the way. I am please with my new guard magnet and would recommend it to anyone who needs a guard to protect any refrigerator papers (including but not limited to, Newspaper clippings, children (or parents) art, To do list, other list, etc.)

    13. Creator Carl-Magnus Carlsson on April 15, 2012

That more realistically looking Mule is not as funny as the sticky ones.

    14. Creator Josh O'the Wisp on April 14, 2012

Still haven't received my magnet and I'm on the east coast. Was nothing but the magnet, no other items were to be sent. Also made sure to reply to verification mail :-/

    15. Creator daft_inquisitor on April 14, 2012

I actually can't wait to try out the game, myself. I ordered the $115 pack (and tacked on another $75 for books!) just so I could get the game. :) But, like Celine said, the waiting is murder. Worth it in the end, though!

    16. Creator Céline .S. Sauvé on April 12, 2012

Yeah.I'm sitting down to play OOTS in a little while (I have the expansion, but with new players, I think we won't have anyone wandering;) and am looking forward to the Sticky Sticks... But my mind it kicking me over the fact that my _books_ have to wait on them :p

Oh well. More goodness at the cost of a little patience. I can wait.

      Very nice Mule, by-the-by.

    17. Creator Erik Lawther on April 11, 2012

Australia checking in with a magnet, showed up two days ago, now taking pride spot on the fridge.

    18. Creator Greg Z on April 11, 2012

I live in the middle of a major metropolitan area, and my magnets arrived in the mail a week ago....

....after which they sat underneath a pile of junk mail for 4 days before my roomates thought to tell me I had gotten a package. Geographic isolation is nothing compared to what people can inflict :P

    19. Creator Introbulus on April 11, 2012

Just got my magnet in the mail today. Awesome. B)

    20. Creator Kasper Østergaard on April 11, 2012

I live overseas in Denmark, and I got my magnet a few days ago :)

    21. Creator Scott on April 11, 2012

I live in Canada AND on an island and I can report I got my magnet. :)

Rich: "There will be no clues about the final Mystery Prize until it is ready. It is just THAT mysterious."
Hmm.... that's a clue (albeit a trivial one). The Mystery Prize is not something which is ready at this point in time. We've eliminated a whole bunch of things from the universe of possible Mystery Prize things. :-)

    23. Creator Shawn Broffman on April 10, 2012

Thanks Rich. Can't wait for the mini figs, keep up the great work. Also I noticed the book reprints are making progress as well, always good to see.

    24. Creator R K on April 10, 2012

      Got my magnet.

    25. Creator Robin Tanenbaum on April 10, 2012

My tokens include 1 black person in the whole set; would you please include a few more than that in your PDFs?

    26. Creator Robert Melcic on April 10, 2012

Children, great idea, one of our GMs would love that, they love the annoyance that royal brats with tons of power can bring.

    27. Creator Chooi on April 10, 2012

ooh, can't wait to frame and proudly show off the art print! Nice job Giant.

    28. Creator Morgan Wick on April 10, 2012

So far, lower-priced reward levels have gotten their packages before higher ones.

With the art prints finished, the coloring book almost there, and Sticky Schticks not so much, that looks to be about to change.

    29. Creator Rich Burlew on April 10, 2012

@HerrTog: Horses, ponies, and other common mounts will be included. Children, I hadn't thought of...maybe in one of the other three packs, I'll put a sheet of "villagers" that will include some.
@Everyone: There will be no clues about the final Mystery Prize until it is ready. It is just THAT mysterious.

    30. Creator David Ortery on April 10, 2012

Oh mans pack mule! It's hard to go wrong with one of those. Especially when faking all of your minis... a reliable set of pack animals is hard to come by.

..Maybe harder than finding a reliable pack animal.

    31. Creator Aimee Ford Conner on April 10, 2012

We will be waiting a while for our package, but I must say, it's been worth it just to read your updates. My sons and I aare very happy waiting -- thanks for the posts!

    32. Creator Asa on April 10, 2012

I'm in Buffalo, NY and I received the magnet last week. Thanks!

    33. Creator HerrTog on April 10, 2012

Thank you for the Mule. Horses and Children next please? And dead bodies.

    34. Creator Hufgufa on April 10, 2012

Rich you are an inspiration to all self employed people, you are a beacon of hard work, integrity, accountability, and good communication! larga vida Burlew Rich!!

    35. Creator mishabear on April 10, 2012

Now THAT would have been a great prize to order on - a D&D session with Rich Burlew!

    36. Creator Jonathan Friebel on April 10, 2012

I think seeing that mule was when I had to truly acknowlege Rich's artistic talent. I love OotS, and I love the stick-figure art (which is brilliant), but for me (working with equines as my everyday job) that mule captured the essence of 'muleness'. I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the minis!

    37. Creator Sam Wright on April 10, 2012

I'm now imagining colorful magical pony minis...as special mounts for Halfling paladins. :P

Which raises the question: Will there be a riding wiener dog mini?

    38. Creator John Friedrich on April 10, 2012

I wanted a pony instead. :( A Rainbow Dash pack mule would be so much cooler.

    39. Creator Anna Rohwedder on April 10, 2012

Totally true about the mule. We had to use the warhorse counter instead, wich was really confusing every time our fighter rode his real warhorse along.

    40. Creator Dmitriy Brin on April 10, 2012

Nice ass! er, I mean, mule. >_>

    41. Creator Samuel Sol on April 10, 2012

      Pack mule!!! Amazing!

    42. Creator Karl G on April 10, 2012

Well, it is _latest_ December 31st! Patience packages get sent when all else is done, so let's hope all else is done during the summer or something. (yes I also wait with patience...)

    43. Creator William B on April 10, 2012

Are you going to add the final mystery prize to the workometer at some point?

    44. Creator Xwing on April 10, 2012

I got my magnet quite some time ago, International shipping to a small country in EU, so I'm surprised they started arriving only recently. I would like to thank Giant for it, it is much bigger than I expected and looks very nice on my fridge :)

    45. Creator Taz on April 10, 2012

      @BillD4 -
"You'll note that there are no labels on each line describing exactly what every section represents, and that's on purpose. It's different for every item, but suffice to say that the red dot is the initial "concept" solidifying in my mind, the yellow is the planning or ordering, and the green is the production (whether by me in the form of comic pages or by a printer)." <--- There you go.

The print looks epic! Kind of a shame I snagged a patience-signed one so I have to wait till December for it. :(

    46. Creator Tsvika S on April 10, 2012

Hi Rich! Any hints about the last mystery prize (#9) ? Did you have any ideas for it? is it going to be something physical or digital? Can't wait to know... :)

    47. Creator BillD4 on April 10, 2012

I have a humble suggestion... could you please add a legend to the work-o-meter? I always forget exactly what field is what, and have to go back through the updates to find out what all the shapes and colors mean. Thank you very much!

    48. Creator Guy Naamati on April 10, 2012

Just got my magnet yesterday, looks nice!

    49. Creator justin bordes on April 10, 2012

will he ever tell us what the mystery prize is?

    50. Creator Gwynfrid on April 10, 2012

I love the pack mule's expression. Like, "hey, I'm carrying these morons' luggage, but that's just to pay the bills until I get my PhD, you know..."
