Samples, Samples, Everywhere

Lots of progress over the past week. Just about all the physical products have gotten moving, and I'm actually waiting for delivery on the art prints, notepads, patches, and sticker sheets. Nothing to do but keep looking out the window for the delivery truck (metaphorically speaking, since the truck will be going to Houston).

The helpful folks that have been printing the sticker sheets, Stand Out Stickers, sent me a few production samples the other day. They are magnificent. Shiny and durable vinyl stickers that will stay stuck to whatever it is to which you stick them. Here's a photograph of the samples next to a punk rocker minifig, which has been the traditional standard of measurement among fine sticker artisans since the late 14th century.

Also, in case some of you didn't see the revised patch sample picture that I entwiticated, here it is again. Since I've already had like twenty people ask: Sorry, no, you can't have the old incorrect sample, even if you like it better than the correct one. There was only one of those made.

In other news: After a surprising amount of editing for something with so little text per page, I finally sent off the completed files for the coloring book to the printer (a different printer; everything gets its own printer). We should get proofs back sometime this week. With a little luck, the actual coloring books will arrive in the warehouse ahead of the regular OOTS books so we have time to ship out all the bookless rewards first.

Speaking of shipping, I've gotten word that all of the $10 nothing-but-a-magnet and $14 nothing-but-two-magnets reward packages have now shipped—not counting those that added a patch or the Sticky Shticks, and not counting those 100+ people from those reward levels who still haven't filled out their shipping survey. Even if you are declining the magnet and just want the digital rewards, I ask that everyone fills out their surveys so I'll know not to bug you about it later. Anyway, that's like 1800+ envelopes in the mail, so good news there, right?

Let's take a look at the Workometer:

One thing that I want to point out is that this is strictly my Workometer, not the printer's or Ookoodook's. The book reprints still have at least two weeks of printing ahead of them (maybe two-and-a-half), but most of it doesn't involve me. I need to check the updated copyright page proofs when they come and write another big check, and that's about it. Still, as far as I know, we're still on target for books to begin shipping out by the last week of April.

Five Things I've Done Since My Last Update:

  • Proofread and edited the coloring book (several times).
  • Ordered, proofed, and approved the notepads (I didn't get a sample yet, though).
  • Updated and revised the copyright pages of all six reprinted OOTS books to reflect things like their current print run, the other titles printed in the series, and, in the case of No Cure for the Paladin Blues, that we're now printing on recycled paper that wasn't available the last time we reprinted it.
  • Worked with my site admin on a plan to securely distribute the digital PDF comics that are coming without overloading my server on the day that they're announced.
  • Wrote up a list of exactly which monsters will be appearing in the first Monster Mini document.

I guess that's everything I have to talk about. Thanks for reading.

That round ended Wednesday night, so there is no more voting for OOTS. The final for the tournament pits Goblins against Gunnerkrigg Court. of which I read an entire chapter but just didn't find interesting. Others have said it has a wide ranging plot and gorgeous art, so it may be enjoyable for some. One of the main points of the tournament is to introduce people to comics they haven't tried before, so I'd encourage everyone to make their own judgment.

I can't find how you actually vote.

It's likely because Rich doesn't want us voting for him. He'd rather the award go to a webcomic that needs the exposure.

I like Goblins too, but much prefer OOTS, not least because Rich is up front about his irregular schedule. I honestly can't remember the last time Goblins updated as advertised both days in a week. With three hours to go, we're a little over 1,100 votes behind.

    6. daft_inquisitor on April 4, 2012

Wow, I'm kinda surprised Goblins is taking the win from us. I mean, I LOVE Goblins, but OotS is so much closer to my heart.

Well, with less than a day to go, the active campaigning from Goblins has extended its lead to over 1,000 votes. It's odd that we're getting fewer votes than in previous rounds.

We're solidly behind Goblins now, but I think there's still a chance we might pull off this round of the ComicMix tournament:

Could there be a particular reason for that?

Hi Rich, just wanted to say that my magnet just arrived, and it looks great! Worth my donation all by itself. Thanks. :)

    13. Brian Arsuaga on April 2, 2012

If it had come down to Erfworld vs. Oots, I'd have been torn. Xkcd vs Oots was hard enough.

But, despite the fact that I religiously read Goblins too, Oots by far deserves this win. If every person *that put down money* would vote, we'll win the whole thing. If even a tenth of the readers did?

There really SHOULD be a link from the main site. This is OOTS' year, and it deserves it.

For those with color difficulties, lighter red dots are: book reprints, magnets, HP pads, stickers, patches, art print, shticks, coloring book, o-chul pdf, dim sun pdf, haleo pdf, monster minis and the wallpaper - in case you are wondering, yes, these are the same ones as last update, but Rich is a lot further on them than before...yeah, Rich!
The game and the magnets are already available and so is the book I selected, so I am seriously waiting for HP pads, stickers, patches, art print, shticks and coloring books to get done. According to the estimated delivery date, I've got at least two months to wait, but a girl can hope, can't she??

That round of voting was supposed to end last night. When the next round hits though, we'll need to hit it hard. Two of the artists in the competition are actively whipping their fans into a frenzy. It would be nice if we could deliver Rich a victory without him doing anything as unseemly.

    16. Kent Anderson on April 1, 2012

Rich: I sent you a message through Kickstarter about the fact that by the time things are finished, I will no longer be at my current shipping address, and provided a new address for my shipment. I wanted to make sure you got it, or whether I should contact you via email (which I would assume I'd be able to find on the OotS website.)

    17. Caffiene on March 31, 2012

Awesome! I cant wait to stick stickers to things. :D

For the colourblind: No change since last time in the red dots.

    18. Rich Burlew Creator on March 31, 2012

@Max Katsev: Orders with just SSADT (or SOD or DCF, for that matter) could theoretically go out a little earlier, but they still need a coloring book. The absolute best case scenario for the coloring book to arrive is a week before the reprints do. So if the folks at Ookoodook get every single bookless order out the door before the reprints show up, then yes, the SSADT orders could go out marginally earlier. Realistically, I think they're all going to go out together.

@James Thanks for the link bro. I actually read quite a few of those webcomics and it's cool to see how their readers stack up against each other. It's gonna be hard deciding between some of them, I'm excited to see the outcome.

This is great, and I agree with everyone else that Rich, you are doing an amazing job, AND GET SOME SLEEP CRAZY MAN!!! I went and voted for OOTS as well in the bracket. Archwizard, have you checked out "Will Save World for Gold"? They update fairly regularly and is a great 4e comic, funny stuff there, if you play 4e with any regularity. Anywho, once again, thank you so much Rich for all you are doing!! Hang in there man!!

I will offer however that this is Rich's business and job, so it is really not all that surprising things are moving along somewhat professionally. A lot of KS projects are vanity efforts that someone is doing on the side, in their spare time, etc. Making those much more likely to suffer delays. That being said, juggling all the demands and what is coming and what is going for this many backers can be somewhat daunting at times, I am sure. I have to beleive that there is some smal spot in his psyche that will rejoice when the last promised item is done/shipped/signed/emailed, etc.

I'm with James on this one, though I haven't voted yet. XKCD is pretty much the only other webcomic I read with anything resembling regularity (in fact, OotS and XKCD are practically the only two I ever read).

The progress Rich is making is great, I am very excited to get my patch, magnet, and PDFs.

I've got to say, I'm really impressed by how hard Rich has been working to get everything done in a timely fashion. I can imagine how easy it would be to kick back and relax a bit after the hectic kickstarter, and I have a huge amount of admiration and respect for how quickly things have progressed.
