Mo' Money, Mo' Production

My days as an official millionaire have come and gone. The money became available to use on Friday, and I started spending it this morning. A heady 55 hours during which I wore a monocle, took an interest in yacht racing, and held strong opinions on the Estate Tax. But that time has passed already as I've started ordering stuff. Most importantly, the book reprints have begun their march to completion, along with the art print; the stickers and notepads will join them in a day or two.

Here's a sneak preview of the embroidered patch sample that I received last week. Some of the colors are off, so we're going to fix them in the final product, but I think the stitching came out very well. Check it out:

I've noticed that a lot of the survey results have comments along the line of, "I wanted to get a patch but I didn't know I needed to add money before the pledge drive was over." If that's you, don't worry; we're going to be stitching a few hundred extra. When everyone's rewards have been fulfilled, there will be a way for backers to buy patches through Ookoodook if they missed them (or need extras), until we run out.  This will only be available to people who backed the project, though; I imagine we'll require some sort of verification of your Kickstarter info before you'll be able to place the order. The same will hold true for any leftover art prints we may have. In contrast, I expect we'll put up any extra stickers, notepads, coloring books, and Sticky Shticks that we have remaining without such a requirement, since those weren't explicitly pledge-exclusives the way the patches and the art print were.

So let's check out the Workometer and see where we stand:

In case any of you missed the announcement at Giant in the Playground, I've now started a Twitter feed for myself: @RichBurlew. I should be making updates about things as they happen, as well as pointing out some stuff that might interest backers (like other cool Kickstarter drives that need support). It won't be updated every day because I'm not an everyday kind of person, but there should be some useful announcements here and there.

Five Things I've Done Since My Last Update:

  • Placed the order for the art prints (now awaiting the press proof).
  • Sent out surveys for all signed reward packages except for those listed as "Patience" packages, which won't go out for a few weeks.
  • Had a meeting with my lawyer about various concerns arising from the Kickstarter pledge drive.
  • Emptied my email inbox, as promised! (It got full again, but still.)
  • Placed the order for all six book reprints and sent the first of three Very Large Checks along with it.

That's it for now, I'll check back in soon.

As someone from Europe who forgot to include the extra money for a patch, I was wondering: how much are they going to cost separately, and how much will shipping be? Is that known at present?

    2. Creator Stewart Forbes on March 25, 2012

@Michael Lerner: Elan always did remind me of a boy scout. Both epitomize the chaotic good alignment. Although my experience in scouts might have put more emphasis on the chaotic and less on the good.

    3. Creator Céline .S. Sauvé on March 23, 2012

With the bonus materials to collect, are the shipping dates still accurate for the book orders? I'm mainly asking because I'm hoping to start rereading the books and have it work out that I'm done Books D, -1, 0, 1, & 2 are completed just as 3 & 4 come in the mail. :)

[As it is, I suspect I may reread Goblins Books 1, 2 and Looking for Group's first three books before I start on the OOTS still...]

It strikes me as a touch invasive, perhaps even rude, to ask someone about conversations they have with their lawyer. Such legal matters can be extremely personal, and it seems to me that if Rich had wanted to elaborate, he would have. He didn't, and we should all respect that.

    5. Creator Daryl Putman on March 22, 2012

I'd love to see, when you have free time again in 2013, exactly what "legal discussions" you had to have.

    6. Creator Archwizard on March 22, 2012

      @Dale - That link isn't working....

    8. Creator Rebecca Saldivar on March 21, 2012

Yay, patches for people who didn't buy patches! I was super sad I didn't add one to my pledge, so you can bet I'll be getting one when you make them available for purchase. Thanks so much for hearing all us complainers who wished they'd gotten one! <3

    9. Creator Einar Örn Gissurarson on March 21, 2012

Regarding selling stuff that should be exclusive to backers...

When the time comes that you'll be putting the spare patches up for sale, you should be able to make a "For backers only" update that would include a passcode that would be needed to purchase them. Only the backers can see those kind of updates so as long as none of us are blabbing about it to friends, we'll be the only ones who can buy such items.

    10. Creator Colin O'Kelley on March 21, 2012

I am disappointed that "Playing in a pile of money" was not on the list of things Rick has done since the last update.

    11. Creator Steve Jensen on March 20, 2012

I'm sure that Lawyer visit alone (with his bill) was enough to end your days as a millionaire... :-)

    12. Creator Sam Wright on March 20, 2012

And on the patch, it kinda looks like Elan is in serious need of dental care. Is that just a trick of the picture/scan?

    13. Creator Sam Wright on March 20, 2012

I think it'd be neat (and a good source of revenue) to have some things like the notepads and coloring books be regular products at Ookoodook.

    14. Creator rlandbeck on March 20, 2012

Lawyer? It doesn't surprise me that there may be government issues involved. This comment thread seems to be all about checks and balances. *rimshot*

    15. Creator Kelly Overholser on March 20, 2012

Heh, never knew about that interview, Rich. I especially like your answer to the last question. Amusing just how prophetic that comment was :P

      And congrats again!

    16. Creator Almagesto on March 20, 2012

Wow, it's amazing. And yes, considering that some of the things were explicitly listed as exclusives it would be nice to have them just for the backers. Thanks for the hard work, Rich (and sorry your millionaire days are over, pal) :)

    17. Creator David Jones on March 20, 2012

I'm with Andrew on this... how many times did you look? Did you screenshot your balance? If I were you, I would have sat on it for just a week... just to say I was a millionaire for at least a week!

We love your work, Rich, and we love your dedication to it. We are proud to turn your vision into reality!

    18. Creator starfyre76 on March 20, 2012

patch looks cool. Though light green probably would have been a cool background too. But that's just my $0.02

    19. Creator Steven Chaston on March 19, 2012

      I second that motion!

    20. Creator Mercedes (Mandy) on March 19, 2012

Awesome! I totally missed out on the patch :) bc I stumbled upon this project right at the end :) Thanks for the great updates!

    21. Creator Tim McCloud on March 19, 2012

The drawing of Rich on the Workometer ABSOLUTELY needs a monocle!

    22. Creator Michael Lerner on March 19, 2012

I personally loved the Look of the Patch Sample. It reminded me of a "Boy Scout" patch which would completely fit with Elan's character ;)

    23. Creator Carla on March 19, 2012

For those with color difficulties, lighter red dots are: book reprints, magnets, HP pads, stickers, patches, art print, shticks, coloring book, o-chul pdf, dim sun pdf, haleo pdf, monster minis and the wallpaper.

    24. Creator Kenneth Sawyer on March 19, 2012

Are there any pictures of you wearing your monocle? Personally, I think you would look quite classy with it on.

Still, that 10 grand seems to pale in comparison to a million dollars, regardless of how big it was.

I still think you should have gotten a 2 by 4 ft one from Kickstarter, and uploaded a pic of it :P

    27. Creator SpecLad on March 19, 2012

I kinda like the green background.

    28. Creator Andrew on March 19, 2012

How many times did you look at your bank balance in that 55 hours, Rich? Which was more momentous - receiving all that money, or writing very large cheques and paying it back out?

    29. Creator Andrew Hows on March 19, 2012

I hope you got a screenshot/paper statement with your Millionaire status on it so you can frame it somewhere :)

    30. Creator Rich Burlew on March 19, 2012

@YaVerOt: Luckily, I have prior experience with such checks: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp…

    31. Creator fernando nogueira on March 19, 2012

let's hope the concerns that arose (?) with the pledge drive are nothing too serious, and that you have more skilled legal help than Jones & Rodriguez...

    32. Creator Matt Lee on March 19, 2012

I'm really curious what legal fallout/gotchas there were to discuss with your lawyer.

    33. Creator John F. MacMichael on March 19, 2012

There is a nice post about OOTS and Kickstarter over at the Tor Books website (Tor.com, 3/19/12)

    34. Creator Zoot on March 19, 2012

Awesome! Good to hear that progress is being made, I can only imagine all the little things that must clutter up your day when trying to organise something on this scale. And I hope you enjoyed your monocle while it lasted!

    35. Creator Nathan Loofbourrow on March 19, 2012

      Lawyer? Please don't sue us!

    36. Creator YaVerOt on March 19, 2012

I love watching people deal with those 2ft by 4ft checks, makes it entirely worth the expense of having them made. :)

    37. Creator Robert Price on March 19, 2012

      Excellent!

Did you at least enjoy some fancy cheeses while you were rich, Rich?

    38. Creator Peter Cohen on March 19, 2012

Nice to see an update. Hopefully the next one will see progrreess on all the freebies for the postal packages and you'll be able to tell us that most of the $10 and $14 packages have been sent out.
