The First Update of the Rest of your Project

Now that the adrenaline of the last countdown has worn off (and Kickstarter's servers are all fine and good), we can start talking about fulfillment. Because there's a lot to talk about—mostly because there's a lot to fulfill. As things proceed, I'm going to keep sending out Updates (one or two a week) as a way of giving you information about what I've done so far, what still needs to be done, and how close you are to getting shiny OOTS goodies in your mailbox. So I ask that everyone keep reading these as they are sent to your email so that we can avoid too many people asking me questions that I've already answered.

That brings us to our new chart. Rather than charting how much money has been pledged, this charts the opposite: How much work I've done. It's my Workometer. Each portion of the project has its own line, which will light up section by section until that part is complete. You'll note that there are no labels on each line describing exactly what every section represents, and that's on purpose. It's different for every item, but suffice to say that the red dot is the initial "concept" solidifying in my mind, the yellow is the planning or ordering, and the green is the production (whether by me in the form of comic pages or by a printer). And keep in mind a lot of these things (like the book reprinting) can't get started until the money is actually in my account, which will take 2-3 weeks. Let's take a look:

Now, in an attempt to get one of the most frequently asked  questions out of the way: if you missed the pledge drive deadline, no, you can't pledge now. I'm sorry about that, but I don't have the means to take your pledge and include it in the Kickstarter system—and even if I could, I'm not sure it would be fair to the people who may have struggled to get their pledge in on time. All of the books will be available on Ookoodook once they are reprinted, so you can still order them then. If you're desperate for the swag, we will be putting whatever we have leftover once we fulfill all the orders up on Ookoodook, so keep an eye out for any leftover stickers, notepads, and coloring books over the summer. But the patches are not going to be available to non-backers at all; we may have a way for backers to buy extras if we have any left over, but that's it. As far as the PDF stories, I'm sure most of them will be available in print at some point, even if they are spread out over a few different books.

There's also the issue of one last Mystery Prize, isn't there? Well, since this is the very last's going to stay a mystery until it's finished. That's because I'm not sure if it will work out the way I want it to, and if it doesn't, I don't want to have made a promise I can't fulfill. Once I know I'll be able to get it done (or I find a suitable replacement if I can't), I'll announce it and immediately deliver it. So some day this year, you'll wake up and BAM! Mystery Prize announcement in your inbox. Because you can't predict a Mystery Prize. It comes and goes as it pleases. You'll be talking to it, and turn to look at something, and suddenly the Mystery Prize will be gone. And you'll say, "Oh, Mystery Prize! You got me again." But Mystery Prize won't hear you, because it will already be out there, in the shadows, fighting crime.

Five Things I've Done Since the Last Update:

  • Ordered the Roy Greenhilt magnets.
  • Ordered a physical sample of the embroidered patch.
  • Reviewed a paper stock sample dummy of the coloring book.
  • Finished the last comic of the promised eight-in-a-row.
  • Slept.

--Rich Burlew

P.S. If you pledged at the $10, $12, or $14 reward levels, your shipping survey has just been sent. Check your email or log into the Kickstarter website to see it. You must fill out the survey even if you don't want the magnet (though you don't have to give me your address in that case). Otherwise,  I'm just going to keep bugging you about it.

ARG! I didn't notice the "No Reward Selected" bit of your post. Ignore me. Sorry

@sarandau - If you look down the side of the page under the $10 pledge, do you have a little green box saying "You Selected" after the "Pledge $10 or more" - Because if you don't, I think you're out of luck :(

@Sarda, it didn't come across as a tongue in cheek comment as another question in the survey had "Yes", "No" and "No, but I should have" all as options. It was like he meant to put a "No" option in for the art print as well, but forgot.

@Clay; I will probably just photocopy mine, but that is a good idea.

    6. Clay Fleischer on February 28, 2012

Any chance of the coloring book to be available at some point as a pdf so multiple copies could be printed off for young ones?

    7. Missing avatar

      mathias on February 28, 2012

@sarandau maybe take a look at the previous updates to see if there is info on those cases, and if not it never hurts to send Rich a message even though he may not get back to you for a while. In any case if its not at the top of kickstarter and in your mail that is linked to your kickstarter account, then chances are that you don't get a survey.

    8. Missing avatar

      sarandau on February 28, 2012

@mathias Yes, I also looked out on Kickstarter for the giant survey banner, thinking that my mail could have been lost among the many sent, but nope, it does not appear to be there. But thank you for your help.
@skavensrule And suddenly beating the system does not seem all that awesome :(
@JacoB Yeah, I suspected that when I pledged (and I’m not complaining, as my main goal was “participating”, not getting a prize). Just, if this is the case, it seems strange to write “You must fill out the survey *even if you don't want the magnet* (though you don't have to give me your address in that case)”. So I just wanted to make sure I don't have 30000 survey requests pending somewhere waiting for me to fill them and stuff.

    9. JacoB on February 28, 2012

@Sarandau I'm fairly certain that if you didn't select any rewards, then you don't get any rewards. Crazy, I know. (That includes no pdf, no minis etc) There is no way for Kickstarter to track your pledge after the fact and let Rich mass email you and everyone who didn't select a reward.

    10. Missing avatar

      skavensrule on February 28, 2012

@Sarandau, You may have figured out how to beat the system. If you didn't select any package it is possible that you won't recieve the survey, downside is that you might not be able to get the PDFs either.

    11. Missing avatar

      mathias on February 28, 2012

@Sarandau Did you look at the top of this website? I didn't get mine in the email, at the top of kickstarter there was a big banner saying "There is a Survery pending" or something like that

    12. Missing avatar

      sarandau on February 28, 2012

Uhm… I pledged 10$ (no reward selected), but still did not receive any survey. I searched thoroughly my mailbox, even the spam folder. It's not a issue to me, since I did not pick the magnet, but Rich said that everyone must fill the survey regardless, so I thought I’d point this out.

    13. Sarda on February 27, 2012

Adam - that seems like a tongue in cheek comment, the question should probably be taken as a simple yes/no answer and ignore the flavor.

I just got my survey. I got Swag Pack #1, but did not order an Art Print. Unfortunately for the question in the survey about the art print there was only 2 options to choose from:
"Yes, I did pay an extra $15 for the art print." and "No, I did not, but I should have." There was no option to simply say "No, I don't want an art print."

    15. Jason Cline on February 27, 2012

I understand that to be the case, Jason. That's part of the reason I supported the Kickstarter. I am one of those retailers.

    16. Jason Benell on February 27, 2012

Question-My wife ordered some books from another retailer that are still on backorder. WIll this fundraiser replenish the other outside retailers as well?

    17. Charley Sumner (SeeSome) on February 27, 2012

@Rich - I just got my shipping survey and it doesn't have the option to add a set of Sticky Shticks to my reward. I pledged $33 and selected the $24 two coloring book reward with the intention of adding on a Sticky Shticks for $6.

The other $3 is because I had to be away from the internet for the last few days of the drive and didn't know how much the patch was going to cost. Sadly, I guessed low.

      skavensrule on February 27, 2012

@Viktor, on one of his comments either here on on the website Rich mentioned that any extras of the swag might be sold from the Ookoodook store. I take this to mean that at least a few extras would be ordered of most items to allow for damage/misprints anyway. Even the best printers can still have a goof now and then, of course QuestionableContent had a misprint sell for $390. He also said in the comments of one of these updates that people who don't want the magnet can say so in the survey Email, although anyone who does not at least respond will keep getting the emails.

Viktor Nilsson on February 27, 2012

Oh no! Did you really order the magnets before asking how many wanted them? I can tell you right now that if I had stayed on a 10dollar pledge I would have refused the magnet. I mean come on that's going to cost you so much in shipping just to send them out all across the world.

    20. John Thompson on February 26, 2012

I'm pretty sure that Rich is intending to have the comic book be a regular thing for sale -- in one of the updates, he commented that making the comic book had been something he'd wanted to do for some time now.

    21. Leevi on February 26, 2012

Could we get PDF versions of the coloring books too?

Would be great for people with several children (and for those like me, who abhor ruining a collectible!).

      on February 26, 2012

Rich - Have you thought about modifying the progress markers to help those who are color-challenged. Maybe have the outlines be in red, yellow, and green coupled with having the 'boxes' stay white until you get to that stage and then changing them to the respective color. For example: Sticky Shticks - Red circle filled in with red, three yellow 'boxes' with the left most filled in with yellow and the other two staying white, and ten green 'boxes' with all ten staying white.

    24. Missing avatar

      skavensrule on February 26, 2012

@Miriam The magnet was probably finished in design and cost specs before this pledge even started where as while the book files are ready to be sent to the printer as soon as the check clears Rich does not know just how many books are actually needed yet as many of the packages are for "pick 2", "pick 3" and the person did not have to say at the time of pledge. Once rich starts getting the surveys back that will probably fill up as well. I would have still filled in the red circle if it had been me, but this is Mr. Burlew's chart and it makes sense to him. I am just thrilled that he is keeping us informed this well. Other pledge drives could take a lesson from this one.

@Stephen I'm second then, I had the same problem.

    29. Stephen Kenneally on February 25, 2012

I would really really love a chance to get a patch - I couldn't get one as I couldn't transfer the necessary extra money onto my credit card before the end of the drive. So if it's at all possible for backers to get the extra ones I'll be first in line!!

    30. maldar on February 25, 2012

@Ross I understand whatyour saying, but there was no way she could have been sure that they would have done such nor that it would have work; save that Rich wrote it that way. I have seen players do thing like that.

@Davi if you go to… there is a thread about the Post-Kickstarter updates. So far the stories are about Belkar, Therkla, and the Cliffport Police. That is still subject to change however as the backers of the individual stories might change their minds or Rich might have to use their bachup choices. Rich has promised up-dates as needed though so once the stories are finalized it will probably get posted both in the forums and here.

    39. Eric on February 25, 2012

I have pledged to several different kickstarters and not one bothered to post an update after it closed and they took my money. Just dead silence. Thank-you Rich for being different. Thank you for not giving us a chance to worry that you disappeared to a non extradition country.

@Jeroen and other color-challenged people (not trying to be rude with that last phrase, but I didn't really know what to call it!): the dots that are lit up at this point are: magnets, HP pads, stickers, patches, art print, sticky shticks, O'chul PDF, Dim Sun PDF, Haleo PDF, Monster minis and the wallpaper. I've decided that it is something really cool
