End of the Line—All Aboard!

Posted by Rich Burlew (Creator)

Hey, remember when I said I was saving some stuff to say when this ended? Turns out I'm mostly speechless. Well, speechless for me, which still means that I cram way too many word balloons onto the page.

Let's recap with some achievements:

  • Second most funds pledged to a completed Kickstarter drive ever.
  • The third Kickstarter project in history to reach one million dollars in pledges.
  • The most funded creative work in Kickstarter history in any medium, ever.
  • The most funded project by a single person (rather than a company), ever.
  • 2127% funded from my initial goal of $57,750.
  • 35 goals reached
  • 28 updates made (including this one)
  • 63 increasingly-byzantine reward packages
  • 14,952 backers
  • Over 25,000 books sold
  • Over 16,000 comments made
  • Uncounted broken F5 keys
  • And I think we kinda broke a Kickstarter server at the end there

Any way you want to analyze it, it's surprising. Certainly, I'm still shocked. There have already been media stories about it, and there will be more now that we've ended. And they'll talk about crowdfunding and what this success means to the future of blah blah blah. You know what? Screw that. This is between me and all of you. This is because you guys love the story I'm writing, and I love writing it. We made this thing together, and no one is going to replicate it, not exactly. Oh, sure, these records won't stand forever. Some won't even last a month. But it doesn't matter, because you didn't pledge money to me so I could beat a meaningless record. You pledged your money to me because you believe in me and my silly stick figure comic. And that is not something that is going to be mentioned in those media articles.

But I'm pretty sure the slope of this line will be:

(What, that Mystery Prize at $1,250,000? That was always there. I don't know what you're talking about. But you will have to wait a day or two before I tell you what it is.)

On the other hand, this also marks the beginning of a far longer process: that of making and fulfilling everything to which I've committed. It will take some time, I'm not going to lie to you. I will do my best to keep everyone updated on every step of the process. I won't be able to write daily posts all the time, but as each hurdle is cleared, this is where I'll tell you about it. Like I said in the last update, give me a few days before expecting anything; I need to recuperate a little. But then we'll start talking about shipping address surveys and delivery schedules and all that fun stuff.

This is going to be a big year for me, and for OOTS, and for GITP. And for you, I guess. You have a veritable shower of goodies waiting for you in your reward packages, and there will be some unknown number of new ideas and improvements to the website, the comic, and whatever else I can make better for everyone by throwing some of this money at. I hope you're as excited as I am to see what comes next.

Because if this drive has proven anything, it is that I am very, very bad at predicting the future.

P.S. For reasons I don't understand, I can no longer see or make Comments on the project because it says I'm not a backer. Which is really upsetting, considering that's where the party's been this whole time. So if you want to make sure I can see what you're saying, comment on this update instead. (EDIT: Never mind, this fixed itself.)

P.P.S. You are still awesome.

EDIT 2: It looks like somehow my total was off a little; I'll fix the chart.

Megan and Moshe Jonathan Gordon Radian like this update.

Hey everybody ! just a french salute to thank us all for supporting Monsieur Richard Burlew for this insane adventure he took a few years ago. We're a bunch of fans here over the sea and we want to thanks him for enlighting everybody's life and every pledger for enlighing his ! ;)

      Thanks again, Rich' ! :D

    2. Lydia on

That's interesting, but I think the Oracle was just trying to come up with something so Belkar wouldn't stab him. Of course, V is my second favorite character and I don't want him/her to die.

      James C King on

@Mary, I disagree In #567 The Oracle clarifies that Belkar caused the death of all of them (I think he was kidding about the "I wasn't buying it either" bit).

V said (s)he wasn't interested in the free kick, as (s)he had already partaken.

But each to their own, I guess :)

    4. Lydia on

The oracle said he would be the reason for either V, Miko, Windstriker or the oracle's death. Belarus later killed the oracle, fulfilling the prophecy (and why the oracle is in line). I maintain V is in line because Haley gave V a free kick.

    5. Missing avatar

      James C King on

In regards to V's appearance, remember that The Oracle told Belkar he'd "Cause the Death" of Vaarsuvius (OOTS #331).
Maybe V is just getting in early?

Wow... That's possibly the most morbid page you've ever drawn. Also, very complex.
DId not expect it. My face mirrored Elan & Haley's.

Is there any news on what the $4000 mystery was? Or has that not been decided yet? (there is no way I could have afforded it, but my curiosity was piqued.)

Will you gives us an update at some point with the total amount actually received (after declined cards and other possible issues?) With this much money involved in so many small transactions, I would be amazed if we didn't lose at least a few thousand dollars.

    9. Keith Nixon on

I suspect it will be a double pager.

I can't wait. Perhaps the "complicated art" will be an action montage similar to Indiana Jones' dodging wall-saw traps in "Holy Grail".

I'm guessing "complicated art" doesn't bode well for our kobold chum =p

    15. Rich Burlew Creator on

I haven't forgotten about the last comic in the consecutive run, it's just taking a very long time and I couldn't finish it yesterday. Lots of complicated art. It will be up in few hours.

    16. Lydia on

Haley promised her/him a free kick in exchange for flying her up to the top of the graph. That's why (s)he's in line!

@Aiden Schore; I believe this was brought up in the OotS forums. While probably just a coincidence, it is... worrying.

Why is V in the line of people to kick Belkar, when everyone else had been killed by him. This worries me.

@ Spruce, around 4 hours ago Rich on the discussion board said there be an update later tonight after the new comic is up, so guess we find out soon.

Did we ever find out what mystery prize 9 was?

      John Landrith on

Richard and everyone else, READ THIS PLEASE:

Richard has mentioned an April date to mail out the packages. Every one needs to be aware this is impossible!! That is 200 packages a day for the next 60 days. Even if Richard took a year to mail out all the packages and worked 365 days straight that is 36 packages a day!! Still hard to do!! Even doing it for a year, that is about 8 hours a day doing packages if everything goes smoothly (about 15 min per package is what I have seen as a normal expectation).

So, if there is anyone that lives near him in PA PLEASE PLEASE offer to help him fulfill these orders otherwise, he won't have time to continue the comic!!! If I lived there I would volunteer!!

Congratulations!!! Now the real work begins.

@Celine, if any of the high-end pledges "goes wrong", rest assured there are plenty of fans ready to step up and fill the gap.

    30. Patrick Reid on

good, good. I pledged for teh Game expansions and knew it included the first PDF, and I was Hoping it also included the rest. T.y. , Eric Z.

    31. Eric Z on

@PR To my knowledge, everyone who pledged $10 or more gets the bonus PDFs.

The physical bonuses (both free and extra) are only available to those who ordered the art print or something more expensive, for shipping reasons.

    32. Patrick Reid on

Quick Question, Does everyone get the bonus PDFs? I hope so, I wanted the game expansions but I want more Oots too!

    33. Céline .S. Sauvé on

I'd had the same issue with being unable to comment yesterday. Odd.

It seems the $80 -1 issue has been fixed. I hope no one lost their pledge. O_O

And now, as well as discovering what Mystery #9 will be, I look forward to seeing what the three $1,250 stories are. *crosses fingers that nothing goes wrong with high end pledge payments, or somethings* ... *doubleknocks wood*

    34. Ahdok on

Travelling Man have been quite good about stocking these in the past - if they don't try a Forbidden Planet instead.

    35. Tim Knight on

Thank you Rich! Have pledged as much as I can realistically, but we will be buying your books when they get in stock ;), as the next pay cheque will be in by then. Send some to Travelling Man in the North East of the UK please (ps I'm aware you don't actually send out to specific suppliers, they in fact buy off you but hey worth a shot! ;))

    36. rinsukaze on

Backed for "The whole story". It surely will hurt my pocket, but Belkar deservers it!

    37. Danny Bell on

I wish I could have backed with more dollars, but I'm happy I got to help even a little. I've been reading this since the start and I'd like to say thanks a bunch. The strip is awesome.

    38. Sam Kaplan on

Un, friggen, real. I am awestruck and lovestruck and just generally struck.

    39. Xykon on

Congratulations on a job well done! I've been a fan of the comic for many years and have the original game+expansion and the two prequel books and the SSDT book already. To be honest I never saw a need to get the printed version of the online comics and I never ordered anything at Cafeepress due to the enormous shipping charges.
I'm really happy to have contributed in this drive though and am looking forward to my Swag Pack Nr. 1 with the art print, mini game addon and of course the patch. I was worried at first when my CC didn't go through but that issue has been resolved quickly.

Now the only thing I hope is that you have enough money to get yourself the latest and best computer available and the latest Illustrator version as well. I really hope you'll get at least that out of it for all the stress that you'll have handline all the pledges. And make sure to not hurry through with that... I think we are all (or most anyways) aware of your health issues so take it easy... noone will die from waiting a few days more to get their stuff!

    40. Rick Westbrock on

I couldn't agree more, I have gotten so much enjoyment reading the comics online that I didn't have any problem throwing some cash into the pot. I am looking forward to getting hard copies of the books now, too. :) Too bad I didn't realize that my $16 pledge required me to e-mail a request for the patch but I'm not worried, as long as the comic keeps going I'm happy.

This is the first kickstarter I have seen where the amount did not plateau after a while. The graph kept going up and up, with an increasing rate of increase right up to the final moment. And I am one of the people guilty for contuously refreshing the page near the finish line, and causing the server to crash.
In my case I wanted to support the webcomic because it has light hearted humour, deeper characters then most things on tv, a great plotline, and lots of spirit. I wanted to support this kickstarter drive because the graph comics made things so much fun, and Rich's humility and continual effort to reward people for their pledges made me want to help him more.

COngradualtions Rich. You have a great webcomic and deserved this success.

Of course we sorta did the easy part. Clicked a button and spent a few bucks. Now Rich has to work hard for a year. I hope he doesn't end up resenting the hell out of us, lol. :) But I love Love LOVE Oots. For a "silly stick figure comic" the story is surprisingly gripping for me. I was almost heartbroken at the death of Miko. Reminds me of real life examples of how someone with the best of intentions could derail themselves so thoroughly through obsession and the narrow lens of self-righteousness. Chlorine Elementals. ROFL. The unfolding intrigue in Team Evil. Haley coming into her own as a leader. The potential of what Vaarsuvius' dealings with evil may cost everyone at a crucial moment. Great story. I remain tightly gripped.
