Eye of the Pig, Baby. Eye of the Pig.

Well, you did it, and way ahead of the deadline, too. We passed the million dollar mark last night, Sunday February 19th, at around 5:45 pm EST (10:45 UTC). This makes us only the third Kickstarter project in history to reach a million dollars, and when we close at noon tomorrow, we will be the second to actually close at that amount (since Double Fine won't close for some time). In commemoration of this, the official Kickstarter Blog has posted an interview they did with me a few days ago.

Before I get on to the other business at hand, let me say this: It's all you. I make silly stick figures for a living, but you're the ones who care about them enough to make this happen. I couldn't have done it without your help—literally, of course, but also in more intangible ways. Nine years is a long time to draw stick figures, and I've had days where I just wanted to wrap the whole thing up early and move on to something else. But now that I know I have this kind of support out there, it will be that much easier to keep going during the hard times. So I'll keep working to make OOTS better and we'll keep this spirit going through the end of the pledge drive, through the rest of the year, and on into whatever the future holds. Thank you.

OK, enough mushy stuff. Business. Mystery Prize #8, you say? Well, you know how I'm doing an OOTS every day  (if you don't count my one-day screw-up)? Because we reached a million frickin' dollars, I'm going to do it again. At some point this year, I'll give you all another week of seven OOTS strips in seven days (give or take another screw-up in the middle). I won't announce it until the first strip runs, but it will be sometime in 2012. What's more, I will add another day onto that run for every $100k we raise over a million (so we're almost at 8 comics right now).

Rather than another Mystery Prize, I'm going to announce this next one ahead of time. Previously, I had promised you a file with over 100 OOTS-style mini monsters to cut and fold for your D&D game (or to have little fights on your kitchen table). If we reach the $1.14M line on the chart, I'll quadruple your monsters. I'll send you FOUR such files, one every season until around this time next year. That's over 400 monsters, if math isn't your forte. Not coincidentally, that line also represents the amount needed for me to get an actual $1 million sent to me, after Kickstarter and Amazon take their fees (and allowing for as many as 5% of everyone's orders to get declined by their credit card companies for some reason, which I hope won't actually happen).

Now, to bring us to the subject of emails and special requests: The deadline for special requests has now passed, so if you haven't already messaged me about them, I'm going to have to politely decline. We have too many special cases already, and I haven't even gotten to all the emails that are backed up yet. You'll have to work out what you get from our standard reward packages, and if you can't get every book you want in one box, don't forget that half the point of this drive was to make sure that they'll be available on comic book store shelves for years to come (as well as on

Also, if you've made a request already and I haven't gotten back to you, either I haven't gotten to it yet and will still be contacting you, or the answer to your question is, "Unfortunately, we can't do that for reason X or Y." I spent 14 hours answering emails yester-today, and at a certain point, I stopped sending emails to people if what they were asking was not feasible (often because they wanted to add more to a package than their shipping envelope would allow). My apologies for my crappy customer service in that regards, and I hope no one will be personally offended by it.

Chart ahoy!

I feel like I had a dozen other things to say, but I can't remember any of them right now. So I'll just finish this update now and write another one at the end of the day. Thanks again for all this.

--Rich Burlew

P.S. I had to take a few hours off from adding new reward packages, but I'm back to updating them every two hours or so now.

I hope Belkar's got some padding he can wear -- even with the price of gold as high as it is, that's still a heck of a lot of kicks he's going to have to endure.

Since I was curious, according to the current price on CNN's commodities website, and at 20% of the gross, Belkar's got about 142 ounces of gold coming his way.

Hmm... Well, I'm behind the extra monsters, though without any at-home internet access the *glances at total* 9-day update prize doesn't do much for me. (Though it does mean the _next_ book will come that much faster, so that's good :p )

It is fair to say that Rich didn't know that the drive would hit $1.2m, so it is probably also fair to say that if he had known he might have spaced out the bonuses differently. Retrospectively, he gave out the extra content (pdfs) very early and at very low bench-marks. When he was 100% committed and the numbers kept on going up he added stickers, hit-point pad, wallpapers and colouring-in book within only a few thousand of each other. In the hypothetical where he redesigned this knowing the final total, he may have rotated between extra content and swag at more spaced out levels. So if the $1m is anti-climatic to you, just mentally replace it with the Dim Sum pdf - the final result is the same, you get both, and the order just reflects the complete over-funding that this project got.

Strangely enough, I am more interested in seeing his monster PDFs. And tracking down the right sort of light cardboard to print them on. Not doing as much gaming as I used to, but this will make a very nice suppliment, especially if I can find a bunch of plastic stands to put them in.

Thank's Rich. They, and the rest of the stuff you are handing out, will be much appreciated, at least by this (not-so-little) fan from Down Under.

Rich, the bank is gonna freak. Should you know nothing else in your stunned marveling, know the bank is gonna freak. Because who else's fans are this crazy? I mean, dedicated. That is totally what I meant.

I had to grab the "Patience for your D&D party" package when it showed up on my smartphone. Just had to. No, I can't afford it. But if I hadn't gone for it when it popped up I knew I'd always regret not doing it! OOTS is one of the few really good justifications I can come up with for running a credit card balance for awhile.
Thank you Rich - for all the joy you've brought us, with stick figures, crayons and stories that make us care. You are the one that touched our hearts; may the faith and love your fans reflect back to you inspire you as you make the final chapters of the saga sing. When all is said and done, yours will undoubtedly be the biggest ovation since Bill Watterson left the stage!

This is my first ever comment on anything dealing with OoTS. I have been a long time reader, first time poster. Mr. Rich Burlew, thank you so much for writing this comic. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I only vaguely knew what D&D was before reading your comic, and now I am an avid D&D player and have made many friends and have had a lot of fun playing the game and reading your comic. (I'm female, by the way, so I might not have EVER gotten into D&D without your help, LOL!) So thank you, thank you, thank you, for creating this comic and continuing to make it so much more awesome. *internet hugs*

We all long for more story. Another backer said it best when they said "in order to meet MY thirst he'd have to publish once a minute then the story would be over to quickly". I also try to temper my desires with the words of the great philosopher Jagger who said "You can't always get what you want."

I think the "no schedule" thing works well for planned extra pages. Mr. Rich "The Giant" Burlew simply pops on to his news page one day when he is sufficiently rested and feeling groovy (and by groovy I mean in good health and energetic) , and possibly has a few "buffer" pages ready and says "this week is the week" (of course then we all get unreasonable and refresh every 5 seconds from midnight his time onward to see the newest page)

Here's something you didn't know about me (because really who am I). I am the least spontaneous person I know. I plan, I micromanage, If an event says "doors open at 7:30" By jiminy I am there at 6 pm rush seating, assigned seating, or SRO (this has led to me going lots of places alone because my wife HATES lines, and rushing to stand in them). If anyone was going to "get tweaked" about an erratic schedule I would bet on that person being me. But here's the thing I can't rush Rich. I think I may have tried once and lost use of the forums for a bit ( I may be missremembering I'm old it happens) . So I wait , sometimes I get 3 happy surprises in a week, sometimes not one for what seems like months, I think it helps keep them special. Though if XKCD ever becomes erratic I may just wind up in a round padded room. 8)

      Johnny5000 on February 21, 2012

@Edward Woodman: I really did not know about the "NO SCHEDULE" thing or the other issues. It kinda seemed a bit like a weekly thing. I just hoped for something more substantial than 10,5 extra Comics. I longed for more Story.
The 100k per Single Page Starting at 1Mio just seems a bit too High in MY Opinion. 75k per Extra Page would still be a manageable Chunk in MY Opinion.
But well, Rich set it at 100k and that's that. I didn't demand anything. I merely complained and argued a bit with a few people.
Ah well. You reminded me of another point. Since OOTS has no Schedule, extra Pages in the Main Comic are somewhat Moot. So the only thing is the Consecutive Release, but this happened before from Time to Time. So there is not really a way to distinguish between the Pages.
He could do a "ONCE every Week, some time in the Week Schedule" with Hiatus Notices in Between ala Research Break starting know, it ends when it ends. The NO Schedule thing is a bit Erratic and does not really allow for Planned Extra Pages.

Wait a minute, Belkar was released by Durkon when the graph´s line was around 260k. Now, with 1.161.000 (and more is coming) raised... who got kicked for nearly 900k?

    31. Matthew Katcoff on February 21, 2012

@ Edward, plus if your like me and got the "Print Only Special" (I was originally going to just get SSaDT but since they were out I upped my pledge) then we're talking like 300 extra pages of content that I at least have never seen. Plus the coloring book which I'm sure will have some content besides just the figures themselves, plus the Sticky expansion, which isn't a comic but is content

Then, eventually I'll get the rest of the series in print form (as it's so much easier to read that way) and perhaps even the game (but I'm waiting until my friend gets his copy from this drive so I can try it out first, and then save up the cash).

    32. Scott Eiland on February 21, 2012

Looks like the final (unmarked) specific goal will be $1.2 million, as that will make for 9 consecutive days of OotS at some point this year. Anything after that is just miscellaneous awesome. :-)

    33. Shane Tilton on February 21, 2012

The only reason I donated was because of the graph. I'm not even an OotS fan. I just like how the line moves upward.

    34. Jason Marin on February 21, 2012

@ Rich - I've been following the comic forever - I'm glad you stick to your guns about the update schedule. The QUALITY of each comic more than makes up the the schedule, and I'd rather it stay the amazing awesome comic it is than become some rushed thing just to make a schedule.

To all the people who got the D&D party - congrats. It was the one reward I really wished I could get. I hope some of you will feel it in your hearts to share them with us digitally.

We almost made it. I guess somewhere in the back of my head, or the cockles of my heart I was dreading this would happen, and really hoping it wouldn't. Then I tried to ignore it and failed my will save. Here's hoping I make the save to try and remain cordial, logical, and informative.

@Johnny5000: The first thing you missed is that your complaint isn't new, or unique. It comes up every so often and in general the larger community dreads it's inevetible return. "we want more oots" "you aren't being consistent" "you OWE your fans more consistency" "You'll be forgotten if you aren't more regular". There is only one person that dreads this ugly head being bared more than the community as a whole and it is Rich. Because inevitably what happens is some (perhaps well meaning) soul will mention one of these things, then someone (again perhaps well meaning) will point out that Rich really owes us nothing, and has some concerns that at times slow down production, then flames start, then moderators get involved and the nice playground gets to looking all messified.

The Second thing that perhaps you failed to take into account in calculating how much backers are recieving in terms of "frequently updating oots" are the 8 pdf stories

      Haleo and Julielan 15 pages
3 backers stories (min 8 pages each) 24 pages
Sir Francois and the dragon Undetermined pages
      Dim Sun undetermined pages
      Julio Scoundrel Story Undetermined pages
How the paladin got his scar undetermined pages

So we are getting at least 43 additional pages (if every story with undetermined pages is only 1 page). Do they advance the main story ? Not at all but in reading the last 839 pages, I've discovered that the giant sometimes takes intermissions. So for the nothing we are owed I think we are getting quite a bit. And as a free bonus we get to support someone that keeps us entertained, we raise his morale so he keeps entertaining us, and we make it easier for him to do so. As a super duper added bonus now our friendly local gaming shop might actually be able to get the non compilation books in so we can share our love of rich with our friends/kids.

Thanks Giant, you haven't ever saved me from a bad decision, or any kind of crisis, but you've kept me laughing and smiling for the better part of 9 years (oh and wondering about a certain elf''s gender). In terms of importance to my life you rank right up there with the great Gygax if that means anything to you.

    38. Brian Swank on February 21, 2012

OOTS fans are ridiculous. In the 30 hours since we hit $1Mill, we've averaged something like $5000 per hour since then. I'd say "you" people are crazy, but I think I am included in that "you".

It's probably too close to our conclusion to announce another patch depicting Belkar doing the $1M thing, but that would be pretty cool.

@Oren: o_o; Dang. I didn't even realize there was a "Print Only Special" until you just posted about it. ...Hm. I'm actually torn between getting the $67 "print only" pack, the $222 whole story (that's in print so far) pack, and the $295 whole story + game pack.
I've currently selected the $222 (being able to flip through OOTS comics all at once is lovely, may all those trees rest in peace ^_^;). I don't really need the game (I could always buy it in the future if I really wanted), and $67 feels a bit short and ungratifying. And I don't really need an art print and another 'free' coloring book, so I don't need to artificially boost my pledge to $250.
