Get Your Color On!

We are juuuuust shy of the $500k mark, which means I better make an update fast so that I have something left to talk about tomorrow. You guys surpassed the other two goals over the weekend, so I'm happy to announce that The Order of the Stick Coloring Book is happening! Check out the cover:

Here's how it's going to work: Every pledge that has a book or an art print will get a coloring book for free. There will also (very shortly) be some new pledge options that will let you get two coloring books without the art print, or "swag packs" of two (or five!) of every physical freebie that we're offering (stickers, notepad, coloring book, and magnet). Plus, you can add a second coloring book to any reward package with a book by simply increasing your pledge by $5! You don't need to message me telling me that you're doing it (in fact, please DON'T message me telling me that; my inbox couldn't handle it). Just increase your pledge now, and when we send the survey out asking for shipping addresses, there'll be a place to check off that you added an extra coloring book. In order to make sure we have enough, though, please do not add more than one additional coloring book (so, two total) in this manner.

Now, you'll see that there's a new orange line on the chart. Remember way back when we were trying to get enough to reprint the actual books, and I said that the second line for each book represented a "full-size" print run? Well, this pledge drive has been so incredibly successful that we've been forced to go back and reevaluate how many books we'll need to print in order to stay in stock. What was a full-size print run will now see more than half of its number being sent out as rewards, so I've had to increase the print runs from "full-size" to "super-size!" The orange line, therefore, represents the amount needed to increase the print runs of all six books to be reprinted by 2000 copies each—enough to cover a lot of the orders here while still leaving plenty left to stay in stock after the pledge drive is over. But it's not just a goal, it's also a reward, because if we reach that line, some rewards will get super-sized as well! Every pledge that goes over the $125 mark (including any shipping surcharge) will get TWO sheets of stickers and TWO notepads, while every pledge that goes over the $250 mark (again, including shipping surcharge) will get TWO coloring books for no additional charge (and can still add a third one for $5).

Keep in mind, too, that if the drive keeps going at this rate without slowing down, I may at some point need to add a "ultra-mega-super-size" line to increase the print runs yet again! With that out of the way, here's the chart:

See you all sometime tomorrow, and hope you enjoyed today's comic.

The #1 Kickstarter of all time so far raised $942,578. But the iPod Dock is at about $878,000 with three days to go, so they might end up setting a new record to beat.

    2. Creator David on February 7, 2012

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickstarter

For reference, OOTS is actually in at #6, and the Elevation Dock is at #3.

    3. Creator Michael Zautner on February 7, 2012

Hmm, what's the #1 all time kickstarter? Looked like it was around 900k. This might get really close to that.

    4. Creator Grant on February 7, 2012

*as well as new stories to create?

    5. Creator Grant on February 7, 2012

So just how many individual drawings and personal signatures does Rich have now?

    6. Creator David on February 7, 2012

      Indeed.

    7. Creator Nicholas on February 7, 2012

Limited doesn't necessarily signify HOW limited :-)

    8. Creator David on February 7, 2012

Given that Rich recently added 100 copies to the 'just buy Snips' pledge, the general consensus is 'yes'. :-)

    9. Creator Ben Edwards on February 7, 2012

You know, I just went through the pledges, and at the time of calculating, 1,974 people had selected a pledge that definitely includes "Snips, Snails, and Dragon Tales", and that isn't including any of the pledges that include it as a variable option. Considering it's a limited print run, are there that many copies remaining?

    10. Creator Jay Elmore on February 7, 2012

      Leo:
Never mind, I found it in the announcement of the art print. Noted for the next update.

    11. Creator Jay Elmore on February 7, 2012

      Peter:
Hmm, good question. I can simply assume that it's "more than" until/unless Rich clarifies it.
      Leo:
I don't see reference to a bonus art print in any of the updates. Am I missing it?

    12. Creator Leo Barlach on February 7, 2012

@Jay you forgot the 8x10 drawing for anyone over $250.

    13. Creator Miriam on February 7, 2012

I have a chart that I *think* is correct: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc… (I am assuming we'll reach the super-size mark)

    14. Creator Peter Cohen on February 7, 2012

Jay the "or more"s aren't absolutely clear to me I think they were "more than"s.

    15. Creator Jay Elmore on February 7, 2012

I know there are a couple of different comments about what comes with what, but here is my attempt to make it clear to new people what they are getting. (If I've made any mistakes, let me know; I will correct and re-post in later updates.)

      Awww! V caved into Haley!

    17. Creator James Hardie on February 7, 2012

It would be incredibly cool if this drive could reach up to $1,000,000 :)

    18. Creator Peter Standley on February 7, 2012

Rich is a smart cookie and has already factored that into his numbers I am sure.

    19. Creator Petkus on February 7, 2012

Maybe someone more familiar with Kickstarter can answer this, it looks as though Kickstarter and Amazon get 8-10% of all the funds raised, do we need to aim HIGHER on the chart in order to be sure that Rich gets what he needs? I don't know that I personally can raise my pledge any more, but 10% puts us under 450k. Maybe that's something we should consider? Also I know how fast the $500+ awards went out, and although I can't afford one myself, maybe Rich, you could add a few more?

    20. Creator Porthos on February 7, 2012

@ Unisus: From Rich earlier in this thread:
" Unfortunately, the five magnets in the Swag Pack #2 will almost certainly damage the art print in the mail. That's why we chose to exclude the print from that package."

    21. Creator Unisus on February 7, 2012

I wonder if there is a reason that the Swag Pack #2 can only be upstocked by a book, but not a coloring book or an art print like Swag Pack #1?

    22. Creator Ahdok on February 7, 2012

I'm sure there's an artist around who could manage that :)

    23. Creator John Russell on February 7, 2012

I'm going to second the idea for lines at $556,542 (Kickstarter Top Five) and $577,500 (1000%), just for the sense of achievement. I won't go so far as to ask for prizes, although if Rich wanted to mark the smashing of the latter barrier with a drawing of Roy and Thog in gladiator mode smashing through a column marked 1000% (hint hint) I for one would find it amusing, even if it's just posted here.

    24. Creator JU on February 7, 2012

The Giant has (at least before we hit 7000 backers) recommended contacting him if you want more than your favourite package can allow. He can then give you a prize and you confirm and up your pledge accordingly.
It might take a bit for him to answer though.

If you're sitting on one of those with "no more than that, please" in the description it might be slightly tougher though.

    25. Creator Volker Bache on February 7, 2012

      @Mike: Set up a 2nd account.

    26. Creator Mike Petrillo on February 7, 2012

Is there a way to select two rewards at once? I want the War and Xp book with the no blues for the paladin - but I can't get two books if I have one of the signed single book pledges ... any one know if I can donate an amount to buy another? I could wait till they are on the site but I wanna make the kickstart number larger.

    27. Creator Gerald Ward on February 7, 2012

@Volker, I added $30 to my pledge hoping to get an art print and an extra coloring book!

    28. Creator Jonathon on February 7, 2012

Woot! Have been waiting for an OOTS coloring book (and one for my daughter to play with too).

Sure hope the "Plus, you can add a second coloring book to any reward package with a book by simply increasing your pledge by $5!" is also true for the art print, or I will probably getting a copy of a book I already have :-)

    29. Creator Volker Bache on February 7, 2012

"Plus, you can add a second coloring book to any reward package with a book by simply increasing your pledge by $5!"
Also true for the art print pledges? :-)

    30. Creator dewtell on February 7, 2012

This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to select more than one prize by pledging the sum of the costs? I've already picked a limited edition prize that I don't want to give up, but I might like to add a couple more books now that so many will be available. If so, how do you say you want multiple prizes?

    31. Creator Porthos on February 7, 2012

Re-reading my post, when I said "he has said in the past that he won't raise any funds for a book that he doesn't know when it will be delivered," I probably should have said "he has said in the past that he won't *let anyone pledge* for a book that he doesn't know when it will be delivered". And even then I might be misremembering exactly what he has said.

He might very well establish a "Future Book Slush Fund", with various mystery prize pledge points in it to help raise as much as possible for the FBSF.

And if we're lucky "Book K" will be one of the first "Future Books" that gets printed. ;-)

    32. Creator Porthos on February 7, 2012

Mind you, I could be wrong. And I'd be pretty happy if I were. But at this point I'm just going to consider it a very pleasant surprise rather than anything I can reasonably expect to happen.

    33. Creator Porthos on February 7, 2012

@ Miriam I highly doubt we will see "Book K" on this drive for the simple reason that Rich doesn't know how exactly long the book would be (I'm not even sure it's been confirmed what the spread between grayscale/bluescale/color is). And he has said in the past that he won't raise any funds for a book that he doesn't know when it will be delivered, how long it is or how much it will cost.

Remember, some of the PDFs will might not be out until "summertime". And without a firm date to have a delivery, he might be even more reticent to produce a pledge goal for "Book K"

Now we might very well see a Book K at some point. Just probably not on this drive. ;-)

    34. Creator Miriam on February 7, 2012

@Spencer - I seem to have made a mistake when I transcribed from my spreadsheet. I didn't realize SS&DT and SoD were so short. Based on that data, and my rough estimates from the previous book goals, maybe we'll see it at 600K?

    35. Creator Spencer Nelson on February 7, 2012

@miriam: he could maybe put the crayon drawings too?

    36. Creator Spencer Nelson on February 7, 2012

@Miriam: actually, you forgot one of the PDFs (elan and the dragon dude) and SS&DT and SoD are 112 pages long, and I think OtOoPCs is only like 80. So there is plenty of material! :D

    37. Creator Gil Cnaan on February 7, 2012

Thanks Shmoodles! I missed that one before.

    38. Creator JU on February 7, 2012

Will people who have updated their pledges way above 250 before this update get the third (because I'm quite sure we're going to reach a second for free) colouring book or do they have to update with 5$ between now and the end of the drive?
I'm assuming the answer is that they would just have to fill in that part of the survey, but when the survey goes out it will be too late for updating if I'm wrong. ^^

    39. Creator Miriam on February 7, 2012

I looked through the rewards, and I don't think there are enough pages to justify a book. Being generous and assuming 1.5 pages per update graph (I think he'd have text explaining how it looked from his point of view, etc), and 1 update a day for the next 14 days, that's 42 pages. Add an average of 10 pages per custom story, 10 for Dim Sun, 10 for O'Chul, 10 for Julio Scoundrél, that's a total of 112 pages. Does anyone know long SS&DT is?

    40. Creator C Jared Castor on February 6, 2012

      @Paul Philley:
Yeah, I was pushing that on Saturday. It could be called "One Swift Kick for 5 gp". Sent a message to Rich, but haven't heard anything yet. It likely wouldn't go to print for months, though, so raising funds for it would have to be simply for the satisfaction of seeing it in print.

    41. Creator Shmoodles on February 6, 2012

      @Gil Cnaaan, Read update #8

    42. Creator Gil Cnaan on February 6, 2012

This may be a silly question, but is there a chance of pre-ordering whatever the next book would be titled? I'd totally pre-order now in order to raise the overall level of operating cash Rich has.

    43. Creator Cole Holtgard on February 6, 2012

@Spencer; I know, right? Thog's attempt at Nale makes me guffaw especially hard.

    44. Creator Spencer Nelson on February 6, 2012

I smile every time I see that coloring book cover!

    45. Creator Paul Philley on February 6, 2012

Crossing my fingers that if we give enough, we can buy a new OOTS book of the many pdfs that Rich is making. A Blue K would look so nice on my bookshelf next to my Green D.

    46. Creator Nick M on February 6, 2012

@John T: Rich can modify the text on the ""Project Home" page. So he could put something at top like: PLEDGE UPDATE (date) and a summary off all the cool extras that have been added to the various main pledge amounts/choices.

    47. Creator Amy Fiori on February 6, 2012

@Zorgophlats: Yes, it was deemed needlessly complicated because somebody would eventually be stupid enough to choose it even if they were told not to, and then Rich would have to deal with them not getting a reward and he wouldn't be able to edit the pledge. IF it were possible to set a limit of 0 backers, that would eliminate any problems that come from people ignorantly selecting the pledge, and I think that would make it workable. The minimum pledge level wouldn't be a problem because it would work just as well at $1 as at $0.01. However, I agree with you that it probably isn't possible to set a limit of 0 backers.

    48. Creator Zorgophlats on February 6, 2012

^Also, that idea has come up before and keeping it updated has been deemed needlessly overcomplicated.

    49. Creator Spencer Nelson on February 6, 2012

Rich can edit the project home page as well.

    50. Creator Zorgophlats on February 6, 2012

@ John T. - The minimum pledge is $1. And I doubt he can set the limit to 0 backers.
