Help us reprint the out-of-print The Order of the Stick books to reach new readers (and let existing fans complete their collections).
Thanks to our loyal fans, we reprinted the entire back catalog of The Order of the Stick—and funded a bunch of new stories, too!

14,952 backers pledged $1,254,120 to help bring this project to life.

And the Mystery Prize is...

Last year's Snips, Snails, and Dragon Tales featured a story in a more action-oriented comic book style about the original Dashing Swordsman, Julio Scoundrél. At the end of that story, I ran a letters page which featured a blurb by Julio himself plugging the fictional "next issue," in which I tried to come up with the most ridiculous, over-the-top plot I could summarize in one paragraph. It went mostly like like this (I deleted one spoiler for the events of that story):

  • NEXT MONTH! It's more thrilling sky pirate action as Virginia and I find ourselves caught between the Flying Submarine of Doctor Obstreperous and the Broomstick Gang of Peculiar Peak! Can I keep those crazy witches off of my ship long enough to unlock the secret of the not-so-good doctor's Possibility Eraser? Can I rescue Virginia when she's taken captive by the cabal's secret benefactor?... And what does all this have to do with the search for the Cosmic Soupcan?? Find out in the next exciting issue of Julio Scoundrél!

Keep in mind I had no idea what any of that stuff meant when I wrote that. But now? Now that you've pledged $120,000 to help me reprint two different Order of the Stick books?

Now I will write that story.

How long will it be? Don't know. What will happen in it? Haven't a clue. What's a Cosmic Soupcan? Darned if I know. But I'm doing it anyway, because you deserve it and I like the challenge of it. I'll write it, draw it in the "enhanced stick figure" style of the previous Julio story, and deliver it to every backer of $10 or more via PDF, either at the same time as the O-Chul story or in a separate download a few weeks later (depending on how long it takes to finish). And that's on top of the three "bonus stories" I'll be writing thanks to the backers who pledged $1250 in order to choose a character that they'd like to see more of. (No word yet on who will star in those, but I'll let you know when I know.) How's that for value?

There is one piece of bad news since yesterday. While I don't yet have the final total needed for No Cure for the Paladin Blues, I discovered I had made a math error in my "ballpark" estimation that renders the $140,000 goal for putting it into the rewards too low. The final cost of that book is likely to be higher than I originally thought, which means I can't risk putting them "on sale" in the rewards until we've reached a little bit more than that. As a result, I need to shift the blue dotted line up to $150,000. This won't actually change whatever the printer tells me the actual cost will be (i.e. the eventual blue solid line), it's just a cautionary move on my part to avoid promising a bunch of rewards and then failing to reach the higher print cost total. If we blow through it like we have been every day so far, it will mean nothing in retrospect. In fact, I challenge you all to make me feel silly for even worrying about it by breaking through the new goal like Thog through a stadium column.

Finally, I've been getting a lot of requests from people who already own all the books to add more rewards that don't include books at all, so they can pitch in, too, as well as more high-end "premium" rewards. I just wanted to say that I have heard you and you should expect something tomorrow or Friday, depending on some pricing and testing I need to conduct. OK, now here's Haley (and Elan):

We all are, Elan. We all are.

As always, thanks for the insane support you guys have shown through all this, and I'll see you back here around this time tomorrow. I have to go work on this comic I do sometimes.

P.S. I'll be adding some signed Start of Darkness copies to the rewards in about 15 minutes.

Feel silly about worrying about NCftPB's reprinting cost, yet?

    2. Greg Dougherty on

      On Autographed copies:
Hi Rich, I'll give you the same advice I gave Howard Taylor (Schlock Mercenary): You can make $100 - $200 / hour (or more?) doing autographed copies. I doubt there's much of anything that you do where you can make more than that. Charge enough so you can schedule 20 minutes of hand massage for every hour of signing, then open the floodgates. Don't leave that money on the table. ;-)

    3. Ahdok on

Oh yeah! this means that we're getting NCftPB reprinted!

That's now three books reprinted that I don't own (NCFtPB, OtOoPC and WAXP) - Looks like I'll increasing my pledge again to get it, and refreshing the page every day until we get up to DStP. (at which point I'll increase my pledge again.)

Now we're up to a large box, it's time to start canvassing my mates to fill that up.

    4. grapeson on

$153,700... I think we might be literally off the chart at this point...!

@Sicarius *meeps and doubleknocks wood* There. Now let's hope the jinxes didn't have a chance to soak in before I got here :p

Meanwhile: Mr. Giant, Sir, we need new goals plase. 150k is busted :D

There's a graphic on the home page that suggests that once WAXP has been reprinted Rich'll move on to OtOoPCs, then NCftPB then finally to DStP.

If the graphic is accurate the next goal should be Don't Split the Party.

    8. Scott Schwartz on

Any chance of this funding the next book in the series as well since you are doing great in the donation department?

And now all there that is left is to wait for the update and how to not have a net slowdown at the worst possible second...

      Passed $150,000 noon Atlantic time...

    11. Aephix on

I know he needs to set out goals for a bit soon as NCPB becomes available, there will be a big spike as folks adjust their pledges to add that to their rewards - I wouldn't be surprised to see a 10k spike from that alone.

    12. Christoph "Sicarius" Licht on

@Celine Of course the already existing books have first priority. But with 26 days to go I've no doubt that in the end all books will get a reprint :).

@Petkus Well, one will surely be the actual print run for NCPB and another certainly DStP :).

@ Topic Less than $1,000 bucks to go. Whoo!

At this rate we're going to break 150K by noon (1/26/12). I have no idea what the new goals should be, but I'll say this, I can't be more proud to be a part of this.

    14. Céline .S. Sauvé on

Only _after_ the last book is reprinted, Sicarius, but, yes, I'd love that PDF content (both the "Mystery" and original offer) as an actual book as well. Maybe Book K for Kickstarter :p

    15. Christoph "Sicarius" Licht on

I really really want all the bonus PDF-stories in a physical book. Make it the $250.000 goal or something but please consider it so I can throw even more money at you :).

That description of Julio Scoundrel reminded me of two things: Douglas Adams, and the current Kickstarter campaign for the game For The Win. Which, if any of you haven't checked out, perhaps you should...

    19. dennis on

This is seriously amazing. I'm getting a magnet, a couple of books, and a ton of PDFs. I can't say enough to show how pleased I am at this moment.

Don't Split the Party is the only one left (I believe) after No Cure for the Paladin Blues. Although this slow down is a bit disconcerting...plenty of time left with the additional premium reward options coming down the pipe, that should also boost it a bit. Here's hoping that we can reprint them all!

    22. Cliff Edwards on

UGH. Sooooo many grammatical errors in previous post. Please ignore them.

    23. Cliff Edwards on

Just Please when you add paladin blues, put in an options for that and War and XPs signed. That would be awesome.

Got plans for if we cross the No Cure For The Paladin Blues new-print-run line yet?

And then the line after that, and after that? How many more lines will the fandom cross?

That would of been awesome...I wonder how much the "Total Package" pack would cost...signed and unsigned...

Also...I'm sure people would buy that up right fast and that would definately boost tourism...

Either this has been the longest 15 minutes in history...or I've entered into a Star Trek time warp thingy that causes me to miss my opportunity cause I'm typing...or just a random net slow down at the wrong time...

Uh oh, Anthony Bulldis, I can just imagine Belkar attempting to cut the legs out of such a tower! ;)

As for this bonus: That is very cool (and my cats will be able to hear the funny noises that can't help but come out as I read Julio out loud once again :D).

One worrying thing about that chart: it's slowing down! :( Come on folks, we need to push this on!
