The Goth Fairy

What is it like to be stared at, pointed laughed at? To know you look different but not know why or just want to be treated the same as everyone else.

Jess is the inspiration for a lot of things in my life. Having watched her cope over the years with so many different situations, some brilliant, some good and others so bad that it can almost be soul destroying. You go through every emotion with them and it is not easy, as I am sure every carer of a loved one knows. The illustration you see above is the original sketch Jess drew. I kept looking at this quirky figure thinking there must be a story here? Then suddenly I saw a fairy, I phoned Jess who loved the idea and hence the Goth Fairy was born.

Jess the Goth Fairy has learning and physical disabilities, just like the real Jess. Wings that don't work very well, so flying is scary and landing is a nightmare! She looks different, doesn't do pink or wear those awful things called dresses 'YEUKK!' Jess also copes with other disabilities that make having a normal life as a fairy very challenging. All she wants to do is help others especially those less able than herself.

When discussing the first story, Jess insisted that her friends were in the book, so they have become characters in the stories. We have tried to put into words what it has been like dealing with situations that have happened through her life, both physically and emotionally.

In the first book, Jess finds her best friend Helen being bullied by very large bird. Though a little frightened, she doesn't hesitate to jump in and help.  When the creature hurting her best friend in turn needs help, Jess doesn't think twice about helping them and by doing this the bird's attitude to those less able changes and they all become good friends.

Jess hopes that by telling her story it will tell everyone able/disabled that it is ok to have a disability, ok to be different as we are all the same inside.

The book is for everyone. For parents to read to their young children and enjoy Jess's adventures, for older children to perhaps have an insight into what it is like to be disabled or for those who just love a fairy story (adults included!).

Achievement

Once the book is published Jess (with support) would like to visit mainstream schools, disabled organisations, or anyone that would like to hear the book read to them and talk to Jess about what she has achieved. We already have schools interested in meeting Jess which is wonderful. I will be creating a doll to accompany the visits and Jess is hoping to show her signing skills by signing some of the story. For me not only would it be a joy to see the finished book that Jess and I have written put into in her hands but we hope the message from the book  and the achievement of the project will give inspiration to others like Jess who have so much to offer to their communities they live in and those who perhaps do not know how it feels to be stared and laughed at to understand a little more of how this feels.

Funding

We are so excited with having SilverWood Books www.silverwoodbooks.co.uk on board, and privileged to have them looking after us. They will assist us with their professional skills to produce a book of the highest quality. With their help we have found an illustrator whose designs Jess fell in love with and we feel that her talents as an artist will bring Jess's original sketch to life. Her name is Emily Daly www.emilydalydesign.carbonmade.com So, funding would go towards the illustrator, proofreading and copy-editing, marketing, everything that will help create a book that not only people will want to read but help us raise the awareness of the talents people with learning disabilities have. Below is one of Emily's designs that Jess loved so much.

Support

Jess has already got the support of her Care Providers, Macintyre.  Not  only do they enable Jess to live an independent life but they have also been very generous in giving her some funding towards the project for which we are delighted and very grateful. www.macintyrecharity.org

Future

What of the future?

Should we be fortunate to receive the funding or even a little more than expected this will enable us to publish this book and perhaps start work on the next story we have written. It will also help us to market them to a wider audience which will enable us to spread our message further. Jess has changed my life and those in her family. We hope to continue to help people of all ages understand a little more about what it is like to be disabled and if by putting a smile on their faces when reading about Jess the Goth Fairy that is more than we can hope for.

Thank you.

Risks and challenges

Risks and challenges

There are always risks and challenges when creating something that is a little bit different, in fact life for Jess has always been challenging. Life is full of ups and downs and it is Jess who has taught me to keep on trying and never give up. Should we be successful we are confident that we will be able to deliver all that is promised on time, but if by chance we do meet with any delays we will endeavour to keep our backers informed.

But none of this will be possible without your help and support.
