About this project
Our vision is to provide cleaner, healthier drinking water to all of planet Earth. We plan to realize that one filter at a time. We need your help to launch this product to the world. Naked Filter - clean water for Every Body.
The water you drink should be naked: free of bacteria, free of added chemicals, free of odors, and free of hassle. Naked water is healthier and tastes better. And now you have the freedom to drink naked water anytime, anywhere without any worries at all. This bottle contains the revolutionary Naked Filter from Liquidity Nanotech, the culmination of over 15 years of material science R&D to bring the world a new solution for water filtration.
Naked Filter guarantees the water you drink is effectively filtered. Naked Filter removes 99.9999% of disease-causing bacteria & protozoan cysts all the way through the life of the filter. Other filters’ effectiveness diminishes over time. Naked Filter never stops effectively filtering your water. When the filter is done, no more water passes through. Then you know to swap the old filter out for a new one.
Naked Filter is stupid simple. You fill up a bottle with water and screw on the cap. When you’re thirsty, the naked water you enjoy passes through the filter and shoots straight into your mouth. No pumping. No batteries. No chemicals. Just drink your fill straight from the bottle as you naturally would. It’s that easy to use.

Naked Filter is a consumer brand created by Liquidity Nanotech. At Liquidity, we wanted a way to share our revolutionary technology with the world. And we figured water bottle filters were the best way to get clean water to every body.
Our story is the classic startup tale, with our own heroes, challenges, setbacks, and victories. It began about 15 years ago on the shores of Long Island, with two professors at Stony Brook University who coincidentally happen to have the same first name. The “Bens,” as we call them, are some of the world’s leading polymer scientists, and experts on nanostructured materials.
The Bens were interested in a process called electro-spinning, which could theoretically be pressed into service to create a water filtration membrane. Think of it like a form of 3D printing, but with special materials in a custom-designed, advanced process. Their research was originally funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Navy. It took over ten years of R&D for the Bens to establish the foundation of Liquidity’s membrane manufacturing process.
In 2010, full of ambitious Silicon Valley dreams, Liquidity began taking steps to scale the proprietary technology up to commercial levels. But scaling proved to be more difficult than everyone originally thought. It was hard. With sheer perseverance and grit, the Liquidity team finally overcame all odds. We can now confidently manufacture as much water filtration membrane as the market demands today, and well into the future.
Over the past year, Liquidity started developing consumer products, so we could get this technology into your hands. Naked Filter is our first to launch, and we plan to launch many more. We’re proud of what we have created. And we’re grateful to have you join our effort.
Liquidity manufactures the membrane in Alameda, California.
If Naked Filter takes off, Liquidity plans to expand around the globe, and provide life-saving bottles to those currently without access to clean, healthy, drinking water. This is not pie-in-the-sky idealism here. We've developed inexpensive, efficient, effective technology that could help millions and millions of people in the developing world for whom drinking a glass of water is a daily roll of the dice.
But we need your help. In order for us to achieve the scale necessary to affordably distribute our Naked Filter water bottle everywhere, we require your involvement to support our growth and show market traction. The task is too great for us to do it alone. We already envision many other products where Liquidity’s water filtration membrane can make a practical impact. The more we grow, the more people we can help by providing clean, healthy drinking water.
For all you science lovers out there, get ready for us to geek out on you…
Naked Filter is a mechanical micro-filter with an activated carbon core. That means it physically separates particles from your water by trapping them inside the Liquidity nanofiber membrane. Imagine a colander that you use in the kitchen to strain out pasta; that same principle gives you a decent idea of how our filter works. Naked Filter removes bacteria, cysts, and any particle bigger than 0.2 microns in diameter from the water you drink. Our activated carbon core improves the taste and odor of your water. Because our filter uses a mechanical filtration process, Naked Filter remains safe throughout the entire life of the filter. In other words, it will reliably and unfailingly remove bacteria and cysts from your water. It’s as effective the last time you use it as it is the first time. As more and more water passes through Naked Filter, its filtration membrane traps more and more particles. Over time, the filter’s flow rate will gradually slow, and eventually shut off completely. Naked Filter is self-regulating. When the water flow is too slow, just replace the filter.
There are only a few key elements that comprise the Naked Filter. The most important is Liquidity’s proprietary “bacteria retentive” nanofiber membrane (wow, that’s a mouthful!). The membrane works using a process called “size exclusion.” This means the membrane physically blocks or excludes particles based on their respective sizes. “Bacteria retentive” is a common industry term that means the membrane retains or traps bacteria based on size. The nanofiber membrane possesses a unique quality: it can exclude / retain small particles while letting water pass through very quickly. This is possible because the membrane is made of extremely narrow plastic fibers. The fibers create a very complex web like structure with many intersections. These intersections form very small openings called pores. The resulting porous structure is tightly controlled during the manufacturing process.
Size exclusion membranes with the same bacteria retention performance have been used for decades to filter things like water used in pharmaceutical drug manufacturing and saline solution. However, these membranes could not be applied in a consumer product like a personal water bottle because they require high pressure to force the water through the pores. These membranes are mostly solid plastic. Liquidity’s innovation was to manufacture a material with the same bacteria retention performance, but made out of fibers rather than the shape of plastic sponges. With Naked Filter, now you can get pharmaceutical grade bacteria and cyst filtration straight from your water bottle.
During the manufacturing of the membrane, the nanofibers are laid down in many layers to form a structure that’s complex, but is mostly empty volume. If you are familiar with the game Kerplunk, the sticks that hold up the marbles is a good representation of how intersecting lines can create a very open but retentive structure.
The intersecting sticks show how with just a few lines you can create many points of intersection that prevent the balls (or bacteria) from passing through. Yet look at how much open space there is! Naked Filter works exactly the same way, except there are millions of fibers and intersections in the membrane. This scanning electron microscope image shows how bacteria size particles are trapped. The microscope lacks the depth of field to show how much open volume there is inside the membrane, but trust us, it is there.
As the bacteria in the water flows into the membrane, the bacteria are quickly trapped in the upper layers of the complex, highly porous structure. Meanwhile, all the empty space in-between the nanofibers allows the water to shoot right through.
There are several common water treatment technologies used today. All of them have positives and negatives. We believe Naked Filter has the best combination of features. Just fill up the bottle, screw on the cap, and drink. The water shoots right through. You cannot find a portable water filter that's as easy to use and as equally effective to the very last drop.

Risks and challenges
We are an experienced team of scientists, engineers, and product engineers. Our core leadership team has centuries of experience bringing new water filtration products to market. That said, as with any manufacturing project, there is some risk to executing our plan to schedule. Given Naked Filter must be micro-biologically integral, there is little margin for error. Our manufacturing process needs to result in a product that has an error margin similar to our nanofiber membrane, less than 1 in a million. The bottle must have a perfect fit to the cap, the filter must have a perfect fit to the mouthpiece. These are unique challenges compared to most consumer products. We are confident we can deliver to schedule, but we thank you in advance for your understanding that we are a small startup launching our first-ever consumer product. There will certainly be unexpected events ahead.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
