Hi, my name is Lee Mothes.
I have painted and drawn imaginary places all my life, and now I want to share it all in my new book, An Artist's Journey to Nevermore. This is a full-color visual trip to places that are not quite real, a sojourn to my Coast of Nevermore, and to an imaginary island-nation.
Enjoy 350 drawings and paintings of beaches, quiet surf, angry surf, huge surf, before the hurricane, after the hurricane, beach houses, sand dunes, childhood disasters, Vietnam, dreams of storms, imaginary maps, and imaginary islands, and the story of how it all came to be.
Each page will be 8 1/2" high by 11" wide. Here are a few pages, laid out in two-page spreads:
These are some of the themes of my artwork, a 55-year retrospective. Most of the works were sold long ago but luckily I recorded them in photos and slides. Journey to Nevermore will take you to that sunny porch with a cup of coffee, to the beach out front, then on various road trips and walkabouts to places like The Coast of Nevermore and Roger's Dreamland.
In this illustrated narrative, I write about distractions such as the Vietnam War, alternative communities, and cosmic questions such as "Why am I doing art?". The book tells all.
Why I'm putting this on Kickstarter
I felt it was time to assemble a retrospective art book for my collectors and friends, and when I heard about Kickstarter, I realized that I could produce a wonderful book and share my work as well. I'm also excited to bring my New Island Project out into the world by offering special rewards that will make owning Journey to Nevermore even more fun.
A large chapter is devoted to The Commonwealth of New Island, my 12,000 square-mile ongoing work of art. New Island is like any number of actual small countries, mapped in detail, with its own history, culture, and strange people, plus a dramatic landscape with many beaches. You'll probably enjoy exploring it!
The New Island Project
In Journey to Nevermore, I talk about how the concept began, my part in it, and then share the island's history, culture today and what a few real people have been doing there. New Island will soon have it's own full-color guidebook - more on that in a few months!
Also, New Island's news blog, The Putney Times, relates the latest news, articles and island gossip. New Island is interactive art: anyone may claim a piece of the island for an imaginary dream house or getaway place.

Other Pictures from Journey to Nevermore...
Here are a few drawings and paintings that are in Journey to Nevermore, some I have never shown before:
What people have said about my artwork:
"I just get so wrapped up sometimes in the my new life on New Island - there are days where I can smell the sea air...”
--Travelin' Gal - San Jose, California, USA
“This enchanted Commonwealth [of New Island], with its unique, rich, evolving history and its adventurous natives, has become my refuge at all times of year. It is dream-like, a fantasy that invites and entraps me over and over.”
--Soltaire the Assembler - Wisconsin, USA
“[Your print] The Reading Porch hangs in the hallway outside of the ICU at the veterans hospital where I worked until I retired this past September. There were many times when the sadness of the day would get to me...that's when I would go to your picture and lose myself. For a little while, I could walk in the sand, listen to the waves and imagine reading in that chair or just drink my coffee while I was mesmerized by the view. Your picture allowed me the time to regroup and go back in to care for the sick and dying.”
-- Teresa Hollender, Oklahoma, USA
Please note: the "Houses on New Island" rewards do not involve real estate, real property or any real land. In other words, you can't actually go there, but you can certainly be there in your imagination!
Risks and challenges
Here's how it works: When you pledge a dollar amount, Kickstarter, through Amazon.com, will accept your pledge-order and credit card information, but not charge you until the end of the campaign. If I don't raise my goal of $4,000, your information will be erased and you will be charged nothing!
At the close of my campaign, Kickstarter will immediately notify you whether your card will be charged or not. I will notify you via E-mail if there are any delays in the shipment of your book or any other items. Shipping costs within the US are included in the pledge amounts.
I have completed the writing and the compiling of about 340 pictures for "An Artist's Journey to Nevermore", and the book will be ready to send to the printer at the close of this campaign. I'll only need to add the names of the contributors from this campaign onto the acknowledgments page.
"Journey" will be printed in Ohio, USA by Bookmasters, Inc. The company has proven its ability to provide high quality printing and timely service to me in the past. I will order the printing when the book is funded, and I am doubling their estimated printing and shipping times, so the books should be in your hands on the promised dates. All of the other items will be ready to ship at the close of funding.
PLEASE NOTE: New Island is entirely a work of art and fiction, an imaginary place. Therefore, these rewards involve no real estate or real land.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
