The video above shows what I love - welcome to my world of wild waves!
Now, I am offering 100 new paintings, drawings, prints and ten art books about ocean waves. I LOVE ocean surf, and am fascinated by how waves shape our beaches. I can't get enough of that energy, and I want to continue sharing it.
Below are my story behind this project, the 100 wave images (and more!) that I'm offering, plus a video of a demo and studio tour.
My fascination with waves started while I was growing up on the Southern California coast in the 1950s and '60s. The beach was two blocks away, and I loved to walk along the tide line and watch the waves crash and surge up the beach. (I still do!)
As a kid, I was amazed how quickly the beach near our house was changed by the surf, with some help from the US Army Corps of Engineers. They had built a long jetty to protect a harbor, and within a few years, our nearby beach had washed out. At the time, no one knew that beaches actually move with the shoreline currents. Every wave that comes in moves some sand to the left or right. If you block the moving sand, like a jetty does, the down-current side loses its beach! Oceanfront cottages nearby were eventually left hanging out over the surf!
That experience hooked me on waves and their power. Below is probably my first attempt at drawing storm surf.
I've been at it ever since...
My artwork expresses my passion, as shown by these recently completed works...
I have just completed this drawing, "Crash and Flow", below, which I'm offering as an oversize postcard for a $20 pledge.
Why this campaign...
To do my best work I must travel to the Pacific coast to sketch and photograph waves, and to simply watch their movement. The surf is often "flat" and the weather cloudy, so a lot of time, sometimes weeks at a time, is needed. The West Coast is where I find my strongest inspiration, often from those California beaches I first experienced.
I'm also passionate about beaches. Sandy beaches are probably the most-enjoyed natural features on our planet. We love to play and relax on the beach! As part of my work, I want to share my concern about how shoreline construction, and the possibility of rising sea levels are threatening beaches worldwide.
And now this story...
In 1964, our in-law relatives invited my mother and me to stay at their place on the northern California coast. Our living space had only one bedroom, so my grandfather and I built a backyard bedroom to live in while attending my junior year in high school. I was 16, and it was an amazing learning experience, to say the least.
This year, I have been given the opportunity to fix up the same bedroom-shelter, which had mostly been a storage room for the last 50 years! The current owners have offered to allow me to to use the room for several weeks every year in trade for my fixing it up as a self-contained studio-guest house.
What a strange deja-vu experience, and what a wonderful opportunity!
The place is situated on the Humboldt Coast near Arcata, California, and is only a bike ride from the beaches I visit most frequently. This "outpost studio" will help me create even better ocean-surf art, by allowing me a much-needed base camp. I plan to start remodeling the room this coming June.
To help fund the road trip (2500 miles one-way from Wisconsin), meals and temporary lodging costs, I am offering a whole new series of original mini-watercolors, a special print edition and original paintings and drawings, all adding up to 100 waves!
If you like my waves, you'll love the prints, the paintings, and these watercolors, which were newly created for this campaign.
Here are the rewards...

To raise awareness about the fragility of our beaches, I'm including in this campaign hand-assembled samples of beach sand from Huntington Beach, California, the surf capitol of the world. On the back of each sample's tag is a reminder that Huntington's actual beach may not be there forever!
This reward contains over 300 waves!
