About this project
The Hawthorn in the Hands of the Dead will be a beautifully produced, black-and-white, 72-page collage novel, a surreal/Gothic fantasy, an exploration in word and image of the grotesque, sexuality, love, and death. A shape-shifting pursuit for an elusive villain. From detective fiction to heroic poetry, The Hawthorn in the Hands of the Dead channels different genres and time periods as it journeys into mystery.
The novel will be made up of 80+ black-and-white illustrations with accompanying text largely composed using a cut-up technique. The illustrations are done using stippling, which is a difficult and wildly time-consuming art technique used to create texture, shading, and other optical illusions in drawings by means of hundreds of thousands of very fine dots.
The aim is to produce two smyth-sewn bound editions of the novel -- a regular hardcover edition with a printed cover with glossy film lamination, and a slipcase edition with matching foil stamping, a foil stamped cover, and a glossy dust jacket.
My goal is to raise $40,000. Now, I understand that this might seem like a lot to ask for, but in reality any campaign will end up costing its creator quite a bit of both time and money to fulfill production costs, rewards, and miscellaneous fees. I will be working nonstop throughout the next year toward the book's completion and its eventual release, and only part of the money raised will go toward its creative production.
The novel has already been laid out, designed, and written, plus several of the illustrations have already been inked, so all I need to do now is finish with the pen-and-ink stippling of all remaining pieces which, given its intricate nature, will still take me time.
My brother (a screenwriter and the author of this work) and I have been working on this novel for over a year now, and all that's left is your generosity to bring it to published life.
- The Hawthorn in the Hands of the Dead: an 8.5" x 11" hardcover, both in standard printed-cover and slipcase editions.
- PDF preview: a special 10-page sneak peek of The Hawthorn in the Hands of the Dead. You will receive this reward early next year.
- Postcard sets: a set of 6 (six) 4" x 6" postcards featuring selected artwork from the novel.
- Miniprint exclusive to Kickstarter backers: a 8" x 9" art print featuring an original illustration designed only for this campaign.
- Signed art prints: 10" x 13" museum-quality Giclee prints, all featuring selected art from the novel. Every backer pledging $150 and up will have a selection of four prints to choose from. You will be notified when you can make your selection.
- Commissioned stippled portraits: 6" x 8" portraits, limited to 3. This reward will require a longer processing time to allow me to create these special portraits.
Please bear in mind that we're aiming for delivery of physical copies of The Hawthorn in the Hands of the Dead by the summer of 2015. This includes the many months of production, 2 months for printing, and eventual shipping.

If this campaign exceeds its minimum funding goal, then I have other incentives in mind, such as upgrading the postcard sets to a deluxe, extra-thick, mounted version and Kickstarter-only pin badges bearing my illustrations. I'll update this page with more info on these stretch goals once the initial goal is met.
You will all be with us on the road to success. To help this project get there, please remember to spread the word any way you can. Word of mouth is both online and off, and its success can propel a great idea to full realization.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
When dealing with the creation of a collage novel, especially one in which all of the work will be done in what is often considered a very difficult technique, production delays can occur. I'll be working pretty much on my own on this project, devoting most of my time solely to its completion for many months, and have tried to accommodate any potential issues and delays into my estimates.
Some of the challenges come down to rewards, which will be created after this campaign is over. No matter what happens, I'll always make sure to keep you all informed and updated with teasers along the way. The success of this campaign will grant me the freedom to reach every stage of this project and deliver a product of the highest quality possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
