Color Interfaces, Feature Roadmap, and Shipping Plan

May is here. It’s show time.

We’re firing on all cylinders to get Pebble Time onto your wrist. With new hardware AND software on deck for May, the team is busy, excited, and fired up!

This week, we’re diving into a lot:

  • Preview of the Pebble Time Interface.
  • Pebble Time's feature list and update plan. Pebble launches early and updates often. Take a look at what will be live on Day One and what’s coming next.
  • Mass production starts this week. This is one week later than originally planned. The majority of May backers will still see their watches ship this month. Some backers at the back end of the May reward line will see their watches ship the first week of June.

Timeline, Notifications, and Alerts

A pre-production Silver Pebble Time Steel joined us on a weekend trip to LA. We couldn’t have asked for a better buddy riding shotgun to wrangle the adventures on our hit list.

The colorful e-paper display is awesome to play with and made managing our day a breeze. Snappy animations bring you forward and backward in time to see the future or review the past. The timeline’s quick views let you focus on what matters.

We’re still playing with a few icons—they’re subject to change—but the interface is at a stage where a little show and tell is in order :)

Get flight information from a calendar event right onto your timeline.

Connect an Android or iPhone to your rental car’s infotainment system (wired or Bluetooth—however you like) to keep things moving and the beats pumping from Pebble Time’s redesigned Music app. Switch tracks, Play/Pause, adjust the volume, and keep your eyes on the road.

Be on time for work or play. Upcoming event reminders pop right up.

Monitor weather and forecasts from the Sunrise and Sunset pins found within your timeline.

Pebble Time features a full range of color-coded notifications and animations. You'll notice a bunch at launch, and we’ll keep adding more over time. Check out the templates for Google Hangouts, Facebook, email, and Twitter.

Pebble Time Features: What’s Ready on Day One and What’s Coming

The team’s hard work and preparation all point to backers unboxing their rewards very soon. It’s important to us that all features be delightful and executed well, and we’ve been hard at work to make it so.

With that in mind, the lineup of features and improvements available in the first software release are below:

  • New timeline Interface. Review Past, Present, and Future events you care about right from your watch. Initial support includes timeline pins for calendars, sports scores, and weather.
  • Expanded app storage. Goodbye, 8-app limit! Pebble Time will store as many apps and faces as possible on the watch itself. When needed, an app or face not currently stored will automatically install from your Android or iOS device.
  • New Sports app. Keep tabs on the latest MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAAF, and NCAAM scores with an official Sports app. Find which teams you want to follow to get start times, score updates, and more sent directly to your timeline.
  • Redesigned system apps in color. Alarms, Calendar, Music, Notifications, Sports, and Settings are all redesigned for Pebble Time’s new color e-paper display.
  • Voice replies to Android notifications. Dictate short replies for app notifications that allow direct text replies.

All Pebbles get more awesome with time, thanks to a consistent flow of updates and new features. We’ll keep everyone posted as what's on our “up next” list goes live:

  • Voice response to Gmail notifications on iOS.
  • Voice notes app.
  • Stocks app.
  • Weather watchface.
  • Album art view for the Music app.

Production and Delivery Plan

Pebble Time mass production starts this week (week of 4 May). Shipping begins in the second half of May. The journey from factory to wrist is quite an adventure. Let's dive into the process.

Reward Finalization

Starting next week, we’ll begin locking some backers’ Pebble Time color selections in the Reward Portal. We’ll email you ahead of time to review color and delivery selections. If you’re happy with your picks, no action is needed.

At this time, we’ll also charge your card for any expedited shipping or prepayment of duties and taxes. If this applies to your reward, please make sure your payment method is up-to-date.

Production

As rewards are finalized, Pebble Times are being manufactured, packaged, and grouped into large pallets of master cartons for the next step.

The factory will manufacture smaller quantities of Pebble times to start, and then steadily ramp up to maximum production capacity.

Your Pebble Time will then be batched up and sent for staging and distribution.

Staging and Distribution Centers

Once a large production batch is created, pallets full of Pebble Time watches in master cartons go to a staging vendor for administrative checks and initial customs clearance. After clearing the staging phase, the cartons are shipped to the five distribution centers we set up in the United States, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, and Ireland.

Due to the various steps and paperwork involved, it can take up to 10 days for a Pebble Time to make the trip from factory to distribution center.

Final Processing and Delivery

Here’s where it gets fun. Once reaching a distribution facility, the master cartons are unpacked and split up into individual Pebble Time rewards. These “fulfillment houses” are in charge of the final delivery process: labeling your parcel, passing it off to couriers, and emailing your tracking number.

As a reminder:

  • US Pebble Time rewards will ship via USPS.
  • Standard non-US shipments will ship to destination countries via Singpost.
  • Expedited non-US shipments will travel via the courier listed in your Reward Portal.

Who gets what and when?

Rewards will be fulfilled in the order with which you backed. You will be able to track the progress of your Pebble Time as it moves with its batch through the Building, Processing, and Shipping steps on the reward portal.

We expect production yield to hit full capacity by mid-May. We’ll keep everyone posted on manufacturing progress as it unfolds. At this rate, most May backers will see their watches ship this month. Some later backers in May reward tiers will see watches ship during the first week of June.

It’s all very exciting—we can’t wait :)

If you’re reading this, you’ve made it!

Thanks so much for bearing with a long and detailed update!

We hope it gives you a great sense of where the Team and your rewards are headed at this stage in the game. It’s a lot to review and discuss, so be sure to tell us what you think.

Until next time!

I have an iphone 5s and it will not work, I have the older original watch that I could shut-down and re-start and after learning how it worked, it was good. I have the kick-start watch now and I cannot get it to work. I get a screen thatsays Pebble on top under that is a drawing of a cell phone with a dwon arrow pointing at the right hand middle square on the cell phone drawing, below that is "getpebble.com/app" and below that it says pebble time 3C7A.

If I hold the upper and lower buttons on for ten seconds or so, sometimes it says
"Welcome to MFG!, below that is a list starting with: BT Address, then: Test buttons, then: test display and more.

I cannot get any of the clock or other fuctions to work. My iphone says Pebble time 3.... is Not connected. How do I get it working?

Please get Pebble to support sports update outside US.

La Liga, EPL, Serie A etc, these are the major football leagues you guys should focus on. I know this is a US based company but you guys need to look at the trend outside too. Just my 2 cents

@l-vizz: I don't see anyone here claiming the U.S. is the center of the universe; it is, however, where Pebble is located. While yes, they took orders worldwide, you'd certainly expect features to roll out to the U.S. market first. And much like the original Pebble Watch launch, I think you can expect many third-party apps to support interests around the world.

Look at it this way: I get BBC as part of my cable TV package here in Florida; personal tastes aside, I don't think many people write them letters berating them for showing "Top Gear" reruns when they could be showing "Dukes of Hazzard" or "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Likewise, if you're looking for a company to serve your interest in soccer, it's probably not a great idea to turn to one in the U.S. (for now).

    23. l-vizz on May 5, 2015

@Adam Vannatta: I'm not interested in Sports on my watch - but I have to disappoint you. The USA are not the center of the universe. And the most played sport in the world ist soccer. 35 billion of 75 billion US Dollars are made with soccer in 2013.

Great update! I think the timeline feature looks like it will be very useful. I do wish you could (I know it takes time) develop a few style choices to select between - via phone app, like playful (which is how I would describe the current look), business (more formal - classic), high tech, or different font choices or size of fonts, etc.

The mail app, calendar, facebook etc. not sure why you would need the tiny time displayed at the top as you're likely not going to be able to read it. Not needed and taking up unnecessary space.

Out of curiosity, will there be any special integration for those that have jailbroken their iPhones? I know some devs have released tweaks through Cydia, but to have Pebble offer integration automatically, would be a huge plus for the jailbreak community.

@Brendan C - You have it the wrong way around: Pebble is a US company and about 90% of us don't care about futball or rugby. Perhaps in several months after everything is working they might add those sports.

    34. Mark Arnold on May 4, 2015

I really don't get this timeline idea. Things like calendar reminders and such *already* popped up right on my wrist?

The templates are a nice improvement... although, I generally disabled Pebble's built in one and just used "all notifications". Maybe I will re-enable them with the Pebble Time.

Anyway, long story short - although I don't see the "timeline" interface as detrimental, I don't really see any benefits either...

    35. Brendan Crawford on May 4, 2015

Will the Sports App be configurable so that it works for UK and European soccer teams in the English Premiership, Scottish Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, European Champions League etc.??
Or Aviva Rugby Premiership?? In the UK understandably 90% of us couldn't care less about US sports!

@Pete B - Acorn Archimedes could display a massive (for its time) 256 colours, and was the size of an XBox or Playstation - Pebble Time does 64 and sits on your wrist. Anti-aliasing is a lovely thing, but to be honest I just want it to work. It's not a toy that needs bells an whistles

@PeteB From what I've read they have enabled anti-aliasing in Pebble 3.0. Also know that anti-aliasing works by adding a few mid way colored (usually transparent) pixels in between to trick our eye to think its a less jaggy line. To do this great, you need many colors. https://www.youtube.com/watch… thankfully its more important that there is something closish inbetween rather than perfect so you aren't forced to use perfect colors. However the end result might look fuzzier.

So in short, its possible and I think its there. Just don't expect to much of it :)

    44. Devon Lambert on May 4, 2015

      @Jacob Nielsen:

Because of comments like this (straight from the Pebble Team) -

"The timing of your specific order will depend on the tier you backed as well as your position within that tier -- first come, first shipped."

Also, they list the estimated ship time of the Pebble time early bird tier as "May". Which would means that if I moved from the position I had in line (Early Bird) Tier for Pebble Time to the Combo package Tier (with both PT AND PTS) then in theory I should have the same backer number, but that's not the way it works.

Also, to me, Early bird, denotes I receive my goods first. Not that I'm being all that fussy about it, it's just that I'd like to know so I can plan accordingly.
