Photos, Timeline API, Water Resistance, and More

Posted by Pebble Technology (Creator)

We have one last MEGA update for you today before the campaign closes!

What’s on deck:

  • New Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel Photos
  • Kickstarter Edition Engravings
  • Timeline SDK Preview Release
  • Water Resistance
  • Q&A

Fresh Pics!

Finally got a full set of photos for you!

If you backed Pebble Steel Time, remember that your watches come bundled with both leather and matching metal bands.

These are still pre-production units (the screen images are simulated). We will continue to make improvements as we move towards mass-production, but they are very near what you should expect when your Pebble rolls off the line.

Kickstarter Edition Engravings

We mentioned a while back we’d be adding a special etching on the back of every Kickstarter Edition Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel. Today we have the final etchings to show.

These are unique to the watches from this Kickstarter campaign, as a little thank you for being here first!

The first is the special Kickstarter Edition etching for first time backers. The second is for those backers who have supported both of our campaigns.

Timeline SDK Developer Preview is LIVE

Big news for the Pebble developer community!

Last week, a developer preview of the Pebble Time 3.0 SDK went live. This release gives developers access to the timeline and opens up web APIs to allow developers to start connecting web services to the timeline.

For full details hop over to our developer blog or jump right into the SDK documentation

I don’t code, what does this SDK 3.0 Preview mean for me?

This is the next installment in a series of updates that will allow developers to build great software for your Pebble Time.

The exciting part about this update is that for the first time, services you use on the web will be able to put information directly on to your Pebble timeline. This opens up a wide range of services you can choose to subscribe to on your Pebble Time.

Evening train schedules, favorite TV show listings, eBay listings, comments on your blog, you name it! These types of integrations are now possible for developers to create.

The development community is the lifeblood of Pebble, the apps and services they produce are what will continue to make your Pebble better and better. We hope you’re as excited as we are!

Water resistance for Pebble Time

In order to make sure it works great during sports, fitness and regular life activities, we designed Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel to be water resistant. Our design and hardware engineering teams created a mechanical design with a water-tight seal, as well as a suite of tests to ensure that the watch would work even after being exposed to normal, every-day situations like going for a swim, running in the rain, showering or washing dishes.

Pebble Time was tested according to the ISO 22810 standard. Most other smartwatches are only rated under the less rigorous IEC 60529 IPXX scale, and normal watches are tested to a specific 'static pressure', but we felt you deserved better. In addition, every single Pebble Time watch is tested during the production process for leaks using high-pressure air to ensure the integrity of the seals (we use a fancy Swiss test rig called a Witschi Proofmaster).

In order to test the watch under 'dynamic' conditions, more representative of swimming, our engineers created a test using a swimming simulator with a machine that looks kind of like a paddle wheel. We strap Pebble Time watches to each spoke and repeatedly splash them into water to simulate swimming. With these tests completed, we're pleased to confirm that Pebble Time functions great as sport and swim watch.

It's important to note that Pebble Time is not a dive watch, though. While we've taken care to design most of the mechanical components of the watch case to withstand a depth of 50m, there is a membrane inside that separates the microphone from the outside world. It has a high but limited tolerance for static pressure and therefore limits the depth rating to 30m.

(There's also a myth out there that swimming generates a higher 'dynamic' pressure much greater than 30m. It's false - physics just doesn't work like that.)

Question & Answer

Q: How will I charge my Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel?

A: Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel both include a magnetic USB charging cable similar to the original Pebble. The charging cables are identical for both Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel, and the cables snap into alignment on the charging / smartstrap port on the back of your Pebble Time or Pebble Time Steel.

Q: How will you know if I’m a 2x Pebble Kickstarter backer?

A: We will identify you as a 2x Pebble Kickstarter backers based off your Kickstarter account. Don't worry, if you've changed accounts or went into the original campaign with a friend, we'll provide plenty of opportunity for you to let us know and get you the right engraving!

Happy Pebbling!

Just got my PTS, and there is no metal band included.

      What's the deal?

    2. Cesareo T. Bermundo

To Fabian Haubrichs & David C Ellis - Owning Black Skagen Titanium & Stainless Steel watches, these will probably not be as scratch proof as we would like. Surprisingly, my Black Pebble Steel shows less wear and less visible marks.

I have a question about pebble time steel screen. The pebble steel has gorilla glass. Will pebble time steel?

    4. Missing avatar on

I'm pretty disappointed that I can't get the PTS Silver watch with the Black leather band. Yes I can buy one afterwards but it just seems so much more sensible to me to get it the way I want at first shipment. I would have even liked the opportunity to pay a little more to perhaps get the gold version.

    5. KJ on

I'm a little concerned with the black PVD coating, I've got a Luminox with Black PVD and it is strong but it's not perfect... I think I might just go with the Stainless PTS or maybe get a Bepple cover to protect it... They reached their KS goal and it's definitely going ahead now, seems like a good idea to protect that PVD finish!

Like David C Ellis, I would like to know how scratch resistent the black Pebble Steel is.

please...... please offer the stainless watch with black band.

    9. Ross Miller on

I agree too, would prefer black leather band, maybe we'll be able to buy them once production starts.

I am getting a Pebble Steel. If I get it in black do I need to worry about scratches on the black steel band or the watch it self showing? Or is the steel black all the way through?

    11. Robert Kubichek on

I agree, the black leather with the stainless is a much better combo for a man to wear. 8-)

    12. Carl Jaeschke on

please update the wristband combinations. I would like a stainless steel watchband and the black leather watchband combo.

Why the black leather wristband only with the gunmetal wristband?

what is difference between pebble time and pebble time steel? i bought pebble time and if there is price difference how i can pay more if i want to change to pebble time steel? and if i want to buy one more pebble, how i can pay for it to get together by one time?

    14. Alexander Parsan on

@Deva Dasan Unfortunately, I believe the time to do that was before March 27. You credit card should have been charged by now, so it is not possible to change. You may cancel the order however I think before it ships and by a time steel later this year in stores if you really want one.

      Deva Dasan on

Sorry sometimes I'm totally out of it. Is it possible to change my order from Pebble Time to Pebble Steel?

    16. Collin Hausman on

@Ron Milne; The device alone will not support NFC capabilities that allow Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and CurrentC, but there will presumably be a smartstrap that allows for this functionality in the future.

    17. Brian Austin on

Please ignore my previous comment. Next time I'll fully read the update thread. Can wait to get my GOLD Pebble Time Steel! For me this is Christmas in August - YES!!!

    18. Brian Austin on

@Teampebble I heard that the Pebble Time Steel pushed the display to the front of the watch lens. Please get rid of that ugly gap! #pebblebacker

I have been in and out of hospitals over the past month so am way behind pertaining to enhanced capabilities of Pebble Time on updates .Therefore, I apologize if this question has already been answered: Will Pebble Time be able to process mobile payments similar to Apple Pay?

When do we get to choose the color of the watch. Did they already send the email for it? Can someone please tell me.

Hi I was a backer of the original campaign and this current campaign, unfortunately I was unaware I had two Kickstarter accounts, when will I be able to officially let you know this so I can keep an eye out for the email. Thanks

    23. CaffeineJunkie on

@Sowad, Currently they have said it is not possible to choose a different band, and it's not a service they have ever offered with the previous Pebble watches.

    24. Sowad Al-Mughni on

Is it possible to get the Red Pebble with black belt?

    25. Fan Yang on

one question for the original pebble, is it possible for the original edition to migrate to timeline or coz of hardware limitation it's not possible for upgrade.

      Vittorio Saltalamacchia on

So thats images of the real thing is it ? Dont think so, why do you keep issuing rendered images ? How can we select if we cant see a real item - I see the gold watch has become a "satin" finish not like original render which showed a quality high gloss finish. Well which is it ? the satin which doesn't look no where near as nice as original render - lots of people will be disappointed if that comes through the letter box im sure

    27. Zannalov & Kaynary

I'm in the same boat as Oliver Stedall (who posted two days before me). I've also sent this question via the project page's "Ask a question" button.

I pre-ordered my original Pebble very shortly after the original Kickstarter campaign ended. I waited quite a while, then received my Pebble with "Kickstarter Edition" written on the back. Even though I wasn't in the list of Kickstarter backers, my pre-order counted for getting a labeled watch on the first round. Therefore, am I eligible for the Champion edition engraving?

      Thank you!

    28. Khadeem Henry on

Will I be noted as a champion if I backed this project and backed the first on in Sept/Oct 2013 on the website before it came out in late November 13'?

    29. Tommy NZ on

I want to upgrade my order to Pebble Time Steel. Can anyone advise?

@Ben with the pebble time(steel) you can even dive up to 30m deep.because its the better ISO (idk the number) so 30m means 30m

@Greg Kickstarter Edition really is a better engraving than Kickstarter Backer. I guess they should let us decide what engraving we want. But I guess they just engrave it just the way described in the update.

Prefered Engraving on Pebble Time Steel

I have been a backer of both the original Pebble & the Pebble Time Steel. Pebble Project Update #11 indicates that my Pebble Time Steel will be engraved: “CHAMPION KICKSTARTER BACKER”. Would it be possible to replace this with, in decreasing order of preference:

      1. “Kickstarter Edition” (as on the original Pebble)
      2. “KICKSTARTER BACKER” (as indicated in Pebble Project Update #11)
      3. No engraving

      Thanks in anticipation,
