Introducing Smartstraps and Pebble Time Steel

Over the last week, you (54,568 of you!) supported our shared vision for an outstanding smartwatch with no compromises. A watch that helps you get stuff done, without breaking the bank or forcing you to change your habits. The Pebble team and I thank you deeply for your support.

While we have yet to figure out a power efficient method for incorporating the requested time travel capabilities, we have two equally forward looking announcements to make.

Today, we are extraordinarily proud to introduce Pebble smartstraps and a new flagship to our lineup: Pebble Time Steel.

Introducing Pebble smartstraps

We believe your smartwatch should help you accomplish more every day.

When we started Pebble, we opened up the platform and invited the software developer community to build remarkable experiences for Pebblers everywhere.

Looking at all the amazing things our developers have created over the last 2 years, we decided to open the platform once more...only this time, for hardware developers.

Have you ever wanted to go for a run without your phone and still track your speed and distance? How about a Pebble watch with a battery life of more than a week? What about a NFC chip for payments, keyless car remote, or a pollution sensor?

Rather than trying to shove every sensor and doohickey into the Pebble Time, we decided to keep the watch simple and functional and give our incredible maker and developer community the opportunity to build from there. Up until now, if you wanted it all you had to compromise…on battery life, size, design or feature set. Not anymore.

That’s why we created Pebble smartstraps. It’s simple: straps can now contain electronics and sensors to interface directly with apps running on Pebble Time.

Now everything is possible -- GPS, heart rate monitor, NFC, battery extension, you name it! Accessory makers can create all of these. Not only that, it’s so easy to change straps (5 - 10 seconds) that you could swap them in and out on your way to the gym, before going on vacation, or even while getting into your car.

It’s in your hands (on your wrists) now. This is going to be awesome.

We’re still finalizing the entire system, but we wanted to announce this so hardware hackers can get started experimenting with the platform. Full details can be found on our developer blog. We may work on some of our own smartstraps at some point but right now we’re focused on opening the platform up for hackers and hardware developers. And we can’t wait to see what you can build.

Maybe your smartwatch can do everything

It's Business Time

Just when you thought things couldn't get any better, we saved the best news for last.

Today we are extremely excited to finally announce Pebble Time Steel. Quite simply, it looks fantastic! Where Pebble Time is more sporty and playful, Time Steel emphasizes different design cues and brings a refined and elegant aesthetic to the same Pebble you know and love.

At its core, Time Steel is powered by the same system as Pebble Time…with a few tweaks.

  • Delicately crafted, CNC-finished 316L stainless steel case
  • Larger battery, up to 10 days of normal use
  • Same color e-paper display, now bonded directly to the top lens
  • Available in Gunmetal Black, Silver Stainless, and Gold (you’re welcome, @CaliforniaLahve!)
  • Includes two straps: fine leather and stainless steel

Same great features as Pebble Time:

  • Comfortable, ergonomic design. 1mm thicker on Pebble Time Steel.
  • Water resistant. Swim, shower, run in the rain—all good (leather strap should not be submerged).
  • Built to last. Stainless Steel bezel with Gorilla Glass lens.
  • Customizable. Standard 22mm watch band with quick release mechanism.
  • Smartstrap ready. Magnetic charging port with data connection for smartstraps.

Time Steel starts shipping in July. Each reward package includes two straps (leather and stainless steel) for just $250, which is exclusive to Kickstarter. The regular retail price for this package will be $299.

How To Upgrade From Pebble Time

But wait? I already backed Pebble Time, how is this going to work?

First, don’t panic.

We anticipated a number of you may want to upgrade, and went to great effort to ensure a couple of things:

#1 - If you choose to change your reward to Time Steel, you *won’t* lose your spot in line

#2 - See #1.

So get excited! This means if you backed Pebble Time right at 7am PST on Feb 24th, we’ll make sure you get the very first Time Steels that roll of the line when they begin shipping In July.

How To Update

We’ve created two new reward tiers for Time Steel. Both tiers begin shipping in July.

#1 - Pebble Time Steel Tier for $250: one Time Steel in one of the three colors along with 2 straps (fine leather and stainless steel).

#2 - Combo Tier for $400: one Pebble Time and one Pebble Time Steel along with 2 straps (fine leather and stainless steel), your choice of colors for both watches.

You will be able to make your choice of color(s) after the completion of the campaign.

Backers wishing to upgrade from a Pebble Time to a Time Steel should switch to the single Time Steel tier.

Backers wishing to add a Pebble Time Steel in addition to their Pebble Time should select the combo tier. We will ship out each watch separately, so you don’t have to wait until July to get your Pebble Time.

One thing to be aware of

If you are an Early Bird backer, and you switch to a Time Steel tier, it’s unlikely you will be able to switch back to the Early Bird tier should you change your mind. There are a limited number of spots in the early bird tier, and your spot will likely be taken the moment you switch out.

      @David Whitlark : Where have you read it's LCD ??? It's color e-ink

"The new color e-paper display is easy to read and always-on, perfect for displaying incoming notifications and your favorite watchface. Compared with display technology like LCD or OLED, power consumption is minimized, enabling Pebble Time to achieve an industry-leading battery life of up to 7 days."

    3. Creator Sam Hainsworth 3 days ago

Does it now have a speaker? at the end of the video it sounds like the watch makes the noise

    4. Creator David Whitlark 4 days ago

I think it's really confusing to label the watch as e-paper when it is a LCD display. People may confuse it with the similar term e-ink. Which is not a LCD display. It is deliberately misleading and honestly it leaves me feeling somewhat disappointed.

    6. Creator Tse Chi Ming 5 days ago

Can I get two Pebble steel and one pebble time, since I cannot select the pledge with this combination. Thanks.

    7. Creator Nicolas PENCREACH 5 days ago

The metal case is thinner than the plastic one. On pictures, the black border + metal seems equal to the BB + plastic.
Nonetheless, it would be cool to have a larger screen on PTS and don't have the impression to waste space, even if it may reduce a little the battery life (down to 7 days like PT ?)

    8. Creator Kuhen Punnia Moorthy 6 days ago

Team Pebble, please make the PTS bezel smaller. It makes the e-paper screen look small.

    9. Creator Nathan Thompson 6 days ago

I am not one to be a stick in the mud, but the update that is suppose to be better than rewards seems a little flat. I like the steel option, but right now I am going with the sporty option, maybe some day I will buy it for events, but I prefer darker colors. Also the bands are great, but unless you are shipping the backers of this campaign a heart rate monitor version for hitting over 32 times your original goal, this just feels like a added expense, and almost makes me want to wait for the next generation of smart watches that will have it all. I love my current pebble, but all the other things I backed gave additional items. I do realize with this kickstarter you're not really supporting a start up and we are pretty guaranteed to get a watch, but it still feels a little short of the thank you for being loyal to you despite the iwatch(and other really smart watches) on the horizon. ~A recent fan thanks to the reading rainbow campaign.

I know they are really busy and don't have time to address every question we have so I sent them an email with the following questions (I'll post any reply they send me, assuming they do;)

      Hi,

I know you're really busy with your current lunch on Kickstarter but I have some questions that simply aren't answered or I cannot find them and I'm wondering if you could please answer them for me here and now.

      1) what non phone related abilities does the microphone have? (I have an iPhone)
Can it create watch specific alarms? Reminders?
      2) why is the bezel so big and the screen so small relative to the face size of the watch? A simple smart resizing algorithm could be employed on a larger screen, especially one as simplified as yours.
      3) how will we know about smart straps and their availability? Will you have a section on your website that will refer us to relevant "Pebble approved" vendors?
      4) are the notifications the same as on the original pebble for iPhone? So at least I will not lose functionality compared to my original Pebble?

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

How do I get two Pebble Steel without opening another Kickstarter account???

    16. Creator Rusty Samblack on March 4

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I want. Well close to exactly. If it were made from titanium (for the weight), this would be exactly what I want. :D

    17. Creator Mark Wheadon on March 4

      @Dean Johnson It's Gorilla Glass.

    18. Creator Mark Wheadon on March 4

@Toni -- the image at the top of this update is not a render. In the main "story" they use the same image and it is captioned "Photo of early production unit".

    19. Creator Toni Gurski on March 4

I would love to see the Steel on real life image. I think this render images are not representative.
can you please upload some before this kickstarter campain is ending?

    20. Creator Calum Cunningham on March 4

Will the original colour Pebble have the same technology within the watch strap or just Pebble Steel watches.... Thank you. I have already pledged for the first type of colour Pebble to be delivered in May. Calm.

    21. Creator Michael Bartholin on March 4

I agree with you there Danilo.
The Pebble Time Steel would look even bettter if you remove the black bezel surrounding the screen, and making the e-ink screen just fill the whole of the watch face.

    22. Creator Danilo Munhequete on March 4

I'd like to thank you guys for adding the Time Steel option.
I was an early bird backer, but I've upgraded to the Steel because it looks greater and has extra battery life.

Suggestion 1: if the #PebbleTimeSteel would do away with the "black bezel" surrounding the e-paper screen, it would be great. The best option to do so would be if the screen estate would include the "black bezel" on the Steel version.

    23. Creator Omair on March 4

I sure hope this watch is worth the 250$ price range, because that's putting it nearly toe to toe with the apple watch (and android's) albeit with better battery life. I do agree with some comments that the bezel of the steel makes the screen appear even smaller compared to the standard

    24. Creator Jang on March 4

@Stanley sorry to inform you that the beeping is SFX. Actual Time Steel does NOT have speaker.

    25. Creator Jang on March 4

@Brett I believe the straps are hot swappable. I already ordered nylon NATO straps to go with my future Pebble Time.

    26. Creator JiLPi on March 3

Same as Brett. Please be extra careful with with wristbands and watches back-plates. Nickel release in metal parts, and chromium (chromates) on leathers.
10% of people are sensitive to Nickel; there was a European Directive targeted at banning excessive Nickel release in all jewellery and items in contact with the skin (now part of REACH regulation).
Chromate-tanned leathers cause dermatitis as well. Hexavalent chromium is banned in Europe as well.

I stopped wearing watches 8 years ago because of an allergic reaction (probably caused by Nickel) - and am considering to wear one again with the Pebble... please don't screw up ;-)

    27. Creator Robert Setiadi on March 3

Please post the color of each leather strap and metal band before we need to choose the color of Pebble Time Steel.
In the photo, metal band is only shown for silver option and leather bands are only shown for black and gold models. We need to see the metal bands for black and gold models, as well as leather band for the silver model.
Saying "matching metal band" does not really help.

    28. Creator Nehemiah E. Spencer, MD on March 3

And Moto 360 has a very narrow bezel. And it has built-in heart rate and activity continual monitoring.

      Pebbles has tough competition.

The Epaper display is a real draw. Now can it hold its ground elsewhere?

    29. Creator Nehemiah E. Spencer, MD on March 3

Color me surprised. Steel version is an option!
Counterpoint: at $250, it has to compete with the Moto 360.

Two of the strongest features of my Moto 360 are 1) the ability to set time/location dependent notifications instantly by voice and 2) the ability to use voice controlled Google Now for practically anything else whenever I want: playing music, getting driving directions, doing a math calculation or conversion, getting weather forecasts, looking up random facts, etc.

That's all in the Moto 360 (connected via Bluetooth to the android smartphone). Will Pebble do better?

    30. Creator Simon Simson on March 3

thank god you finally got rid of the hideous front logo.

    31. Creator Brett Cannon on March 3

Will the rubber strap from the Pebble Time be sold separately so it can be used with the Pebble Time Steel? I want the Steel's durability and extra battery life, but I have had skin irritation issues with various watch bands in the past so I want to make sure if the rubber one works for me -- like my current watch band on my LG watch which can't be removed -- I have that option with my Steel.

    32. Creator Stanley Despotellis on March 3

Is there anything official on the beeping at the end of the video yet?

    33. Creator Dean Johnson on March 3

Nice... question. Will the face "crystal" be something more durable than what my original kickstarter Pebble is? It gets scratched way too easily! Still love it though!

    34. Creator Carel van Apeldoorn on March 3

This is awesome!! Great product vision.

    40. Creator Jonathan Stark on March 3

You guys are CRUSHING IT! Gorgeous and up to 10 days?! Happily upgraded to Time Steel :D

    41. Creator Patrick Y.H. Huang on March 3

So...how exactly do we upgrade to Pebble Time Steel?

    42. Creator Bernhard Eichler on March 3

      Great Marketing Pebble!
Bringing great features while the campaign is running.

    43. Creator Peter W. Borders on March 3

I see that the contacts for the smart bands are going to be in contact with the users skin on normal bands. On the Wimm One that lead to lots of corrosion problems, how are you addressing that? I would hate for my new watch to die in six months from contact corrosion.

    44. Creator Jian H on March 3

Like PTS's longer battery life. But not sure if PTS has more business look, especially considering the fact that its display will appear smaller than PT's due to PTS's larger glass lens

    45. Creator Mark on March 3

Okay, I guess I just didn't notice the mic hole at the beginning of the campaign. It's even on the solid models that Pebble has posted, though they haven't posted PTS models. I assume there is a different model since they've said the PT Steel is thicker.

    46. Creator Joul LaFleur on March 3

The pebble steel looks much more elegant. I do not like the steel bands, but do like the leather bands. Much prefer the steel over pebble time, but am I worthy?

    47. Creator Simeon Herbert on March 3

Why is the bezel so wide?

    48. Creator Aaron Wilkinson on March 3

A wrist strap that can replace a keyless entry/push-to-start remote... I would pay whatever was asked for that strap.

    49. Creator Tomi Willstedt on March 3

      @Mark
The hole under buttons is the microphone (not new to the Steel) and the one one the smart strap is for quick release spring.
      Nothing too exciting.

    50. Creator Shane Mahon on March 3

I for one would really appreciate you giving us the option of a steel case with black leather band (instead of stone). Pretty pretty please....
