Meet Pebble Steel + Pebble appstore + new partners

Posted by Pebble Technology (Creator)

Two thousand and thirteen was an incredible year for Pebble. We shipped to you, our amazing Kickstarter backers, landed at Best Buy, AT&T and Amazon, enabled iOS 7 notifications, launched SDK 2.0 and more. Today, with over 300,000 Pebbles on wrists all over the world, we’re back in Las Vegas and have some really great news to share with you.

First, we’re getting ready to launch the Pebble appstore — the very first open platform for sharing apps optimized for wearables. The appstore will live within the existing Pebble smartphone app on your iOS or Android smartphone, so you can find and download Pebble apps directly from your phone.

We’ve made browsing easy, with categories like Daily Living, Remote Controls, Games, Notifications, Tools & Utilities, Sports & Fitness and Watchfaces, of course. That means you’ll more easily be able to find apps that help you track your workout, manage your music or control your thermostat. In addition, we’ll be curating the Pebble appstore to bring the latest and greatest apps and watchfaces right to your wrist.

Second, we’re delighted to introduce Pebble Steel, our new, premium smartwatch. With Pebble, we’ve created an iconic, colorful and sporty smartwatch, but we wanted to build something even more refined — crank the style dial to 11.

Pebble Steel takes everything you know and love about Pebble—the crystal clear ePaper display, weeklong battery life, and waterproof design—and wraps it a smaller, thinner package. It’s made of forged and CNC-machined stainless steel.

The display is protected by a Corning® Gorilla® Glass lens with an oleophobic, anti-fingerprint coating. The housing also subtly incorporates a RGB LED light to indicate charge status. Like the original Pebble, Pebble Steel is waterproof up to 5 ATM.

Pebble Steel comes in two finishes: Brushed Stainless and Black Matte. All models are bundled with both a matching metal band and a black leather strap. The Black Matte Pebble Steel is crafted using a process called Physical Vapor Deposition to provide a tactile, deep black finish that’s also ultra-durable.

Starting today, you’ll be able to order Pebble Steel exclusively from for $249 US, which includes free courier shipping worldwide for early orders. Orders for Pebble Steel will begin shipping on January 28.

Third, we’re extremely proud to announce that Pandora, ESPN and Mercedes-Benz are joining our lineup of partners — which already includes Yelp, Foursquare, GoPro and iControl — and bringing more tiny moments of awesome to your Pebble everyday.

Pandora, iControl, and Mercedes-Benz will be demoing their Pebble apps using Pebble Steel here in Las Vegas — please come take a look if you’re attending CES. Otherwise, you’re invited to watch our announcement video.

We’re super excited about what the Pebble appstore, Pebble Steel, and our new partners bring to the table. Our mission is clear: we’re creating the gold standard for wearables that mesh perfectly with your everyday life, and building the fundamental ecosystem and platform for these devices.

Two thousand and thirteen was phenomenal for Pebble, but expect even more from us this year as we continue to improve our platform and listen to your feedback. Stay in touch with us by signing up for our newsletter in the upper right corner of our blog (

Thanks as always and keep on Pebbling!

My Kickstarter edition is unusable due to screen tearing, it has loose LCD connection which apparently is a common issue. Pebble are refusing to repair or replace the watch and they've suggested I buy a new one. I'd avoid buying one.

    2. Mike Sung on

Loosing patience with Pebble as I was an original backer that have yet had my reports of screen tear issue addressed. My kickstarter edition pebble is now useless because its just too frustrating to use when the screen tear is constant regardless of reboot or reset. Case # 173499

    3. Philipp Bohk on

Nice, new version again - while you forget us original backers who helped you get successful...

    4. James Diss on

Firstly, it would be a nice gesture. Secondly, if you're hoping to sell people a second and higher priced version of your watch and you think 'I have an installed base of people who are _interested_ in buying a smartwatch', there's little more you can do than offer a preferential rate, which other kickstarters have done. The downside that Pebble have in shifting another watch is that we already have them. And can compare the claims with the reality, especially on Especially the battery life. I can't get more than a couple of days out of mine.

    5. Edwin Toh on

I don't see why us original backers should be entitled to a discount. I personally think I backed the project to see it become a reality - which the Pebble team has succeeded with great results. The backing was for the original product. I'm still very happy with the original Pebble I got. :)

    6. Cameron Cooke on

I'm fed up with Kickstarter projects like this. You invest to help a start up which without investors would not exist and then once they are up and running they don't give a toss about us original backers. We should at get a discount or each just a reason why they can't offer a discount. Won't be investing again.

    7. Samuel Sandoval on

I recently sold my Pebble for $100. Give us "Kickstarter backer" a $50 discount!

    8. Noor Ahmed Qureshi on

i like the matt black but am hesitant to order as i dunno if the black would start peeling off after some time

      Herbert da Rocha on

Yes! The original kickstarter backers should get a discount code. With that option I surelly would consider buying the pebble steel.

      Dave on

Dan I'd have to agree with you, would of thought that the Kickstarter backers might of got some sort of thank you discount code. I would definitely consider buying a steelpeb then.

      JAPARRY on

The Steel looks great. I'd love one and would seriously consider it if the original backers got a discount. Pay back time for our initial support and ongoing zeal perhaps?

    12. Philipp Bohk on

Not able to deliver my pebble to Germany but releasing new versions - assholes.
Nice how you handle your backers.

    13. Dan Mize on

I'd really consider this if we original backers got a discount. Love the new style.

    14. Sean O'Connell on

YAY, at last the pebble app store. It kinda of a pain to add apps the current way.

    15. Doug Pearson on

What CES booth can Pebble be found at?

    16. Derek Casari on

Perhaps collaborating with Nest and OM could be on your future roadmap.

What's this focus on steel. My pebble still can't update to 1.14.0 and no one from pebble contact me to help.

      Maikel Lodewijk on

      Any discount for kickstarters?

    19. Stefan Frei on

Pretty good timing given that my Pebble randomly stopped connecting to my phone in December. I hope it arrives soon, my order is placed.

    20. Martijn Snels on

Any discounts available for Kickstarter backers who'd love to have the Pebble Steel?

    21. Missing avatar

      Josh on

New watches look great! Would def consider buying if there was a discount for original backers!

    22. Geof Aberhart on

Well, I guess at least we're finally getting the App Store that was promised almost two years ago, and on the plus side the Steel's straps don't look as phenomenally terrible as the original ones were/are.

    23. Kirk Gustafson on

The back looks removable, does that mean the battery is now replaceable????

    24. Daniel Huber on

I'm glad there's a new option. I sold my white just weeks ago because I thought it looked too cheap (I rotate between a collection of decent automatic and kinetic watches) so I never ended up wearing it. This looks like a step in the right direction, but I'll keep the smart on my phone and the style on my wrist for now on. Others interested in selling theirs... I put it on Amazon for $300 and it sold the same day. Not sure how inventory and this new model will affect pricing, so you may want to hurry!

    25. Laird Popkin

To those bummed that there's a newer/cooler model: it's really the same watch, running the same apps, with the same capabilities, just repackaged a little slimmer and shinier, for $100 more. But it's not a newer model replacing the old one, it's just a higher-end packaging to broaden the product line. And IMO that makes sense - the Pebble is a huge hit, and if you're selling all you can make, going up market is smart.

But everything exciting (to me, at least) is the SDK 2.0 and the new app store, which benefits all of us.

And I have to say that, nice as the new design is, I like that the original Pebble is instantly visually recognizable as a smart watch. The new watch, while stunning, isn't as distinctive. That might be why they put the subtle "pebble" logo on it...

    26. BruceP - Chameleon Prime

Oh how I wish these were the styles available during the KS. :(

    27. Ron Lussier

What's with the 'Pebble' logo on the front of the watch? Why not keep that sort of space-consuming branding off the device?

    28. Simon on

If not a discount for us backers, could we at least get some kind of engraving or something so the watch we order is meant for an original backer. love the new watch guys, I'm so tempted to buy

The metal body is definitely better and gorilla glass is an interesting addition although this does mean that there's one more thing to worry about breaking, forget 'scratching'. The design is "blah" to me, but I guess that they are going for the traditional look and Joe Blow consumer and not the 'future-look' customer.

    30. Eastpointvet on

@suguru because we are early adopters who made the dream a reality so to speak. so as a token of thanks it wouldnt be a bad thing to say oh by the way guys since you are at the core of making pebble possible heres a $25 discount on our newest endeavor because you guys are special to us. i ordered one anyway but a discount would have been nice.

      Marylou Egi on

Erik, I'm excited about the metal body but disappointed that is wasn't an option from the beginning. Is there any option to upgrade if our pebble is still in the box?? That wouldn't be any question of incentive but if preferred style. Options???

    33. Jeremie Lariviere

      Very Cool!

    34. Missing avatar

      Ronald M. LaPedis on

Very cool looking band, but I'm holding out for Pebble Titanium with the same band.

    35. Brian Friend on

The steel watches look fantastic! $250 is a little steep, but I imagine it's priced that way to prevent a shortage and because there are still plenty of people who will pay that price.

    36. Missing avatar

      Smit Shah on

I get that a premium pebble is going to cost more, but $250? The HOT watch has a metal body, gorilla glass, and a microphone for making calls with the watch, plus metal/leather bands and 5ATM water resistance, and mine only cost $130

    37. Missing avatar

      Erik on

@suguru I understand your point of view but besides a steel frame what has improved from the base functionality? There is no major improvement on the internals that I can see. There is no incentive to buy this new pebble for most who backed, therefore an incentive via a discount or trade in program would bring in more pebble who are in the fence about spending $250 on a watch that is basically the same.

    38. DareMachina on

You can flip through multiple notifications right now. They showed in 2.0 there is a notifications area where you can go back and review them too.

    39. Johnny T. on

I wonder if I can trade a unused White Pebble in to get credit for a Pebble Steel? I'm still rocking my orange Pebble.

    40. Missing avatar

      Nils Mokleiv on

      Those new watches looks great!

When will you support WP8? My backer peppble is collecting dust :|

      JT Greeno on

One of the photos from CES seemed to show a Steel Pebble with a gold color. When will a gold-toned Steel Pebble be available?

    42. DareMachina on

Pebble steel seems nice but not having standard watch bands is a major issue. That was one of the original pebble's great features.

I'd love to see gorilla glass on the normal pebble too. If only to take away the issue of not being able to read the screen with polarized lenses on.

    43. Threemoons

Is anything going to be done to improve base functionality? The last time I fired my Pebble up, it wasn't quite ready for primetime--unable to scroll multiple messages, etc.

    44. Suguru Nishioka on

I don't know why "original backers definitely should get some type of discount." We backed the project, got the reward for discounted price before public release. Why do you think we should be entitled for another discount for this new product? Just saying.

    45. Missing avatar

      Mikie on

neat, but I think where they said week long battery life, they meant to say 2-3 days tops.

    46. Ben on

Would love to see a discount for KS backers on a Steel or even a trade in programme against current Pebbles, would love a stainless steel steel pebble but couldn't justify the price tag as a 2nd watch.

    47. Mark 'vordo' Wlodarkiewicz on

well, my kickstarter pebble has not been working for the last couple of weeks and you guys said you were going to send me a new charging cable a few weeks ago but nothing has happened and no one has responded to my emails.

I'm glad you are growing the company, how about hiring more CS folks. you already have a not great CS reputation so perhaps you may want to fix that sooner than later.

    48. Eastpointvet on

original backers definitely should get some type of discount

    49. Philippe on

A discount for backers would be great for steel Pebble...

    50. Serge Jespers on

Today I am a proud Pebble "investor". I immediately ordered the matte black when you announced it. Good job, guys!

My only disappointment was seeing a completely new power cable. I wish you would ship 2 cables with it. One for home and one for travel. Also wondering if you had looked at wireless charging. Maybe for Pebble 3? :)
