iOS 7 Notifications + Pebble SDK 2.0 + Thanks!

When we first envisioned Pebble, our goal was to deliver a truly useful smartwatch you could easily customize with apps, watchfaces and notifications. Pebble is designed to be an open platform to enable creative, incredible app development and a way to easily receive notifications and information to your wrist.

Since we began shipping Pebble earlier this year,  the Pebble community has responded with thousands of awesome apps, watchfaces and customizations. Today,  we are excited to share two major software announcements that vastly improve the Pebble experience and platform.

iOS 7 Notifications

We are pleased to announce Pebble is now fully integrated with iOS 7 and works seamlessly with Notification Center. This means that any notifications you've enabled in Notification Center on your iOS 7 device will appear on your Pebble -- just like that. It's easier than ever to pick and choose which updates you want to see on your wrist. This includes notifications beyond calls, texts and emails, such as Calendar, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr, Dropbox, WhatsApp, Flipboard and more.

A new Pebble app for iOS will enable this functionality. Expect an update in the App Store early next week. We'll post an update as soon as it's out!

Introducing Pebble SDK 2.0

Today we're launching Pebble SDK 2.0 into beta, which makes it even easier for developers to build awesome Pebble apps. SDK 2.0 opens up an entire universe of new apps thanks to 4 new APIs:

  • PebbleKit Javascript
  • Accelerometer
  • Data Logging
  • Persistent Storage

These new APIs allow developers to make Pebble apps that interface directly with the web (real-time weather, transit info, location check-in), access to the accelerometer (health/fitness monitoring and gesture-based remote control), log data when disconnected from the phone (health/fitness tracking), and store info on the watch (high scores, time zones, preferences).

Find out more about SDK 2.0 on the Pebble developer blog. The updated SDK beta is available for download at Later this year, we will be pushing this update out as an over-the-air update to all Pebble users.

Partner apps

We're also proud to announce several new partnerships that illustrate the capabilities of Pebble SDK 2.0. These apps will be available for download later this year.

It was your shared excitement for Pebble that made it a reality and we remain grateful for your support as we start bringing wearable tech to a broader audience. The ranks of Pebblers are growing by the day, the app ecosystem is expanding and the Pebble community continues to amaze and delight with clever uses for Pebble.

Going forward, we'll also be sharing news and updates from our new blog at We hope you'll stay tuned in!

Thanks as always and keep on Pebbling!

I'm sure this would be great if I was using an iDevice. The new SDK and features looks nice. But too bad there's no WP support. I'm waiting on Agent.

    4. Trip on November 7, 2013

Awesome! This was the biggest thing I missed when I upgraded to iOS 7! Having jail broke my i5, I really missed notifications after the software update. Glad to see we're getting them back formally!

    5. Xavier Bensky on November 7, 2013

Please support international fonts (like Japanese, for example). There's no point in getting tons of notifications if they're all garbled or appear as empty boxes on the Pebble.

    6. kitt hodsden on November 6, 2013

I'd like to receive my Pebble to begin with. I've sent messages with no response. When can I expect delivery?

    7. Sal Lugo on November 6, 2013

Can't wait for this iOS update! Very excited I will be able to get all types of notifications on my Pebble! Keep up the great work! I still get compliments on my Pebble!!! Absolutely love it as too my wife loves hers!!!

    8. Derek Casari on November 6, 2013

nice update. Possible other alliances going forward might be Nest [smart thermostat], Lumix remote control for Panasonic cameras. Keep up the great work

Guys I can answer almost every question listed below. But it's a PITA to reply to quotes on here since... there is no quotes lol. Why don't you take your questions to the forum, where we can discuss them, we already have a thread about this update.

    11. Peter Lum on November 6, 2013

Awesome ! And now if it supports some form of Unicode , it will be nearly perfect, as my notifications may not be in English

    12. Heegoo Lee on November 6, 2013

It is time I should throw away my pebble. As an international user, I feel ignored ... Fully integrated notification with empty message... what an irony...

    13. Grant on November 6, 2013

Excellent, can't wait to see what developers come up with. Maybe twine ?

    15. Brian Glick on November 6, 2013

Hey Team Pebble - it sounds like you're saying that every single notification that appears on my phone will now buzz my wrist too - is that right?

If so - what I'd really like is the ability to choose what is sent to the Pebble separately from what shows up on my phone. I get a ton of notifications on my phone, and I only check it for those updates once in a while because they're not critically time-sensitive (it's my turn in Scrabble, new emails, Fitbit updates, etc). These would be way too intrusive and frequent on my wrist.

Will definitely hold off on updating to the latest iOS app if I can't separate the two.

      Thanks for a great product!

    16. Luke Garratt on November 6, 2013

Definitely have to give some credit on actually, you know, having news worthy of an update. Be interested to see these new apps - just don't take 6 freaking months to get them out OK!

    17. Marat Alymov on November 6, 2013

Hi guys. thank you for a hard work, but I've got a question- will Pebble finally supports Cyrillic letters or we should use custom firmwares again?) I hope it's not as hard as make new notifications)

    18. ozmars on November 6, 2013

Great update. Will this finally mean caller ID on iOS?

I had all but given up on Pebble. This is what I believe most Pebble backers envisioned over 18 months ago. Support for Pebble in apps like yelp and 4square is encouraging and what Pebble needs for there to be any real interest in it beyond us KS backers and a hand full of techies. I'm encouraged and looking forward to the updated app.

    20. Stephen J. Weber on November 6, 2013

At this point, even if Apple does release an iWatch (ha!), I could care less. This is a brilliant update. I love my Pebble, and it sounds like there will be many more reasons for me to do so soon. A huge congratulations to the Pebble team, and a shoutout to developers for making my wrist one of the most powerful pieces of technology I have. Bravo!

Yeah to finally seeing all Notification in iOS. But the best app you have even remotely mentioned is controlling a GoPro on Pebble. Genius.

    22. Roman on November 6, 2013

I just don't get it: pebble got UTF8 support, it only do not have enough memory to store all international fonts. So WHY??? Why pebble still got no option in it's controlling app to upload separate character sets on device? Is it That impossible to do, so you can sacrifice all the international audience?

    23. Laurie Stoker on November 6, 2013

You guys! This just keeps getting better and better! I'm very happy to keep getting these updates - keep up the good work!!!

I agree with Ben...what about making it easier in Android? Not everyone uses Apple devices!

    26. Ben Coleman on November 6, 2013

So when are you integrating the new notification system that was introduced in Android 4.3? It's been available since July and no news. People are still having to rely on 3rd party apps to get notifications to their devices.

    27. Eastpointvet on November 6, 2013

Is it to much to ask to get the announcement coordinated with the app actually being released shortly after? We wasn't expecting this announcement to take place so if it was next week when the app drops no one would have knew any better.

Good job, guys ... how about using my pebble to change powerpoint slides without having to install Python? Will that be possible with the new SDK?

    32. Dan Larsen on November 6, 2013

This is a big step in the right direction! A little less than I originally expected would be available before recieving the Pebble...

But at least this looks like... Something useful...

I just still don't get, why it is not possible to get notifications working on ios, without the annoying pebble app...

And where the devil is the freakin' BLE support?!?!? I Should probably just stop believing the claim, that the Pebble can be upgraded to BLE via a simple OTA update...

Not even a single word on BLE...? Why??

    33. Kevin on November 6, 2013

I'm excited that you guys are continuing to support and improve Pebble (especially on iOS). However, it's mentioned below and I'd just like to second that there are notifications I don't mind getting on my phone that I'd like to not receive on my watch. I would really love it if the Pebble app allowed you to manage which notifications are pushed to the watch. Also, I missed the announcement, but I'd be interesting in knowing what bugs are fixed. For instance, does the app now run properly in the background?

    34. Nathan Allworth on November 6, 2013
