PebbleOS 1.10 + Proof-of-concept Watchface SDK

PebbleOS 1.10 Update

We've released an updated firmware with a few new features and bugfixes:

  • Fix for watch-side battery life bug for some iPhone users. (Some users were reporting that Pebble's battery life was only 1-3 days while connected to an iOS device. Battery life for these users should increase to 4-7 days)
  • Support for 3rd party watchapps created with the Watchface SDK
  • 'Disable Vibration' option for incoming notifications
  • 'Disable Motion Backlight' option to turn off flick-to-backlight (both options are in Settings->Display)

Haven't installed the update? On iPhone, try rebooting your phone and/or closing the Pebble app like this, then open the Pebble app again and tap the glowing red icon. On Android, use the menu button and click 'Check for FW Update'.

Pebble Android App Update

We've also released an update to the Pebble Android app, now at version 1.7.0. Please update your app to get these new features:

  • Watchface SDK Support
  • Rearranged settings screen
  • Bugfixes

Please note there is still a major bug in Android 4.2.2: After 32 connect/disconnection cycles, Android OS refuses to allow Pebble to connect. The only workaround is to reboot your phone. Follow the excitement that is filing an issue with Android here:

Pebble iOS App Update...coming soon

We submitted an update to our iOS app 2 weeks ago, so iOS users may see a new update soon! This update will enable 3rd party watchface loading on iOS.

Proof-of-Concept Watchface SDK

On Friday, we released the first version of Pebble's Watchface SDK. We want to be extremely clear on this: what we have released is a proof-of-concept designed to give eager developers an early chance to hack on native Pebble apps. It's not the final native watchapp SDK by any means, more of a early start :)

The PoC Watchface SDK is:

  • An extremely early prototype of our SDK, specifically for watchfaces and simple games
  • Designed for developers who have experience working with command line and compilers
  • Strictly C based
  • Missing an emulator. You need a Pebble to test your code.
  • Designed for Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8, and Ubuntu 12.10
  • Not optimized for entry-level developers
  • Risky: developers can potentially brick their Pebble by purposefully going beyond the limits of the public API functions
  • Not guaranteed to work perfectly. Apps compiled using the PoC Watchface SDK are also not guaranteed to work.
  • Subject to change. There is a 99.9% probability that we will adjust or deprecate major portions of the API over time, requiring major code changes.

Another major point: the current Pebble iOS app on the iTunes app store does not allow 3rd party apps to be installed on Pebble. It's in the iTunes approval process now (see above). This means that iOS users cannot install apps created with the PoC Watchface SDK at this time. Developers with iOS devices can install their apps using libpebble.

Without further ado, here is the Pebble PoC Watchface SDK

Documentation is available here: with example source code here:

This is the first step for native Pebble watchapps. Expect more progress from us over time, with major changes like accelerometer support, enabling communication from a watchapp,  persistant watch-side storage and more. We welcome all feedback through our forums:

With that having been said, it's been a pretty incredible 24 hours so far. Over 2,500 people have already downloaded the SDK. Lots of activity on Reddit and the forums. These watchapps are not all ready for the prime-time, but it's an excellent sign for the future.

Contributions to libpebble

Developers on IRC (#pebble) have been big fans of Pebble, for which we're extremely grateful. In particular, Hexxeh started a excellent project called libpebble to reimplement our Pebble Protocol as a python library. Pebble's dev team recognized that this utility had the potential for being even more useful than our internal tools. We decided to contribute to the open source project by adding support for the Lightblue Bluetooth API and yesterday hexxeh accepted our patches (yay!).

Team Pebble is committed to contributing to open source projects, and releasing new developments back to the community. You can follow our OSS contributions on

It's been a pretty big week for Pebble, but as you all know, our work is never finished. We've got a lot more color Pebbles to ship out, and more software to write (and bugs to fix).

Normally these updates are signed off by me (Eric), but I think it's time to change that practice. The sheer amount of work that we pushed live this week is a testament of our talented team, and these updates need to reflect that. The whole team is responsible for the product that we've created. I hope you can join me in thanking the (rapidly expanding) Pebble Team: Andrew, Steve, Rahul, Brad, Nick, Sarah, Joseph, Matt, Martijn, Ryan, Paul, Ben, Philip, Asad, Melanie, Sigrid, Ali, Kareema and Kristen.

If you'd like to join Team Pebble, we're currently hiring talented iOS Developers and experienced Software Engineers in Test for full-time positions in Palo Alto, CA. You can apply by sending your resume and portfolio to

As always, thanks for backing us and keep on Pebbling!

So 21 days after changed from orange to black, no email, no watch, nothing. Only one more broken promise from Eric and his Team. I wish I never have backed this Company. Absolutley poor behavoir to the People who give you the Money to build your buisiness. Every normal Bank had already closed your buisiness to keep los a small as posible.

    8. Adam Green on May 1, 2013

your facebook update says red pebbles landing now but i was an early backer and yet no email yet not cool peble.

    9. Magnus Hølvold on May 1, 2013

It would be nice to know where you are on the red (and my orange) pebbles.

You've painted yourselves into a bit of a corner here, as the lack of communication means that any communication that you do attempt ends with more complaints about the lack of shipping and lack of communication. I imagine you dread making any updates these days, but please do. Not knowing is worse than knowing that we have to wait longer. It's now over a year since I backed the project, I can deal with waiting a little longer for my chosen colour, but I would love to know what's going on.

I know the updates on your Facebook Page about Apps of the Day and such have no bearing on the production speed, but it does sting a bit every time I see you make a chirpy little update about these lovely apps being put out when I have no idea when I'll be able to use any of them.

    10. Shane Dean on April 30, 2013

@William Stone - It is a black one. I changed from a Red as I'm afraid my patience finally ran out...

@David Hyde - I was thinking the same. Also worried that it may be delayed even further given that we have 2 Bank Holidays this month :(

    11. Graham Lower on April 30, 2013

Given the estimated time frame for Red to be moving forward was end of the month, and it's the end of the month, I think it's fair to ask for an update. Production is hard, delays happen, but how one communicates those challenges should be something very controllable. I know, personally, I'd rather have disappointing news rather than no news. In my case, at least, it would allow me to tell my wife that her anniversary, then Christmas, then birthday gift has gone back to being an anniversary gift (and more importantly allow me to buy another gift for whatever occasion is going to happen before things are ready).

Ok I am sick of broken time scales. They have just under one week before they said they would ship to early bird buyers. Just so you know when pebble was set up it was sent to the FCC for tests. Best thing is if you look and read there agree mental they have to give all company information (telephone number, registered business address) and update it for there FCC sign offs. Sick of being told one thing and then it not happening. Give the information you have out and we will stop with the bad comments!!! I will post my out come tomorrow when I call them and send a bill for my time wasted and phone call. Still no e mail with tracking number at stage 3 over 14 days. No replays to e mails. Sent to two different addresses. Next step FCC information.

    33. Lloyd Hannesson on April 24, 2013

Changed to Black on the 9th an hour or two after the email came out.. no notice yet that my pebble has shipped (to Canada). I don't mind waiting longer, but you would think that by now they would shy away from over promising and under delivering. If for no other reason then to cut down on the negative PR they always seem to be getting. This reputation will stick with them, which is sad since the pebble is such a great product.

Or rather, I hear it's great...

After 11 months of backing up this project, got my Pebble watch today at last :-)
Everything, from upgrading to PebbleOS 1.10, pairing with my iPhone 5, downloading new watchfaces (incl. those developed by 3rd parties), to displaying phone calls, text messages, and emails, works smoothly and flawlessly. The watch is beautiful and light on my wrist.

A few notes for improvement for the next firmware:
      - backlight on time is user selectable in Settings. Current setting (3-4 secs) is too short for reading text message / email.
      - Instead of blurry pixelated bar at the top and bottom of the screen to denote scrollable text when displaying the content of SMS / emails, which makes reading text near top/bottom difficult, I suggest showing arrow up and down icons at the top of the screen, next to the mail envelop icon.

I really love my Pebble and grateful for backing up this project. Thanks a lot to The Pebble team for creating such a beautiful watch.

    43. JayC
      on April 22, 2013

I switched one of my watches from orange to black when given the option - the other one I kept red. Hopefully they ship the red within the next couple weeks, though no guarantees.

Overall, the watch is disappointing. I set it up for my wife and downloaded a bunch of faces from the official pebble app onto her watch. not sure if she's downloaded any of the non-preloaded faces yet.

Word of warning - if you have a jailbroken iPhone and you have the BTNotifications tweak installed, you may NOT be able to pair the Pebble with your iPhone. It took me an hour to figure that out. The iPhone will NOT ask to pair with the Pebble, even though you can see it and it can see your iPhone. Remove the tweak then pair normally. And the tweak does not send any additional notifications to the phone that I could tell in my limited testing before I gave it to my wife.

Right now, under iOS, the watch is pretty much useless if you don't use iMessage or if you don't do texting through your carrier. I text exclusively through Google Voice and I don't use iMessage at all. So right now, the only thing Pebble will do for me is tell me when someone calls. Since I barely use minutes on my cell phone, this feature does nothing for me. Also, it's very rare that I get phone calls to my actual number - again, Google Voice takes care of that for me.

When I get the red watch, I will try pairing with both my Nexus 7 and with my iPhone and seeing what is better. I'd exclusively pair with the Nexus7 but I don't want to pay for a data plan for that device just so my watch works properly. The annoying thing is that my music is all on my iPhone, so if I want to control my iPhone's music through the Pebble, I need to pair it with the iPhone but if I want additional functionality, I have to use the Nexus7. Those of you with Android based phone plans may have much different mileage.

The runkeeper integration may be promising but with no ETA, it's kind of pointless. If there was some way to get directional guidance while walking (say through Apple Maps) that would be nice, especially if you're walking.

      @Adam P
You may want to consider deleting the Pebble app and reinstalling. You should only need to do the toggle once at the start for the selected apps. I initially saw the same help docs too but I have not had any issues since the last update with notifications. Maybe, I am just one of the lucky ones if the update did not resolve the issue for you.

    49. Missing avatar

@wendy that is interesting using the exact same phone. I only get text an calls nothing else. I looked through some of the pebble help docs and they even admit that right now those are the only ones that will constantly work for the iOS. Sounds like your one of the lucky ones.
I am not planning on putting it up for sale. I don't use it as much as I thought. Ill use it while I'm on the kayak, but won't replace my normal watch. And that's only to see who's calling or texting. My bluetooth headphone can answer a call and change tracks.

      @Adam P
I can totally respect the way the you feel. Especially, since you have had first hand experience with the watch. Hopefully, if you decide to sell, you can make a profit.

I agree with you about the limited number of watch faces. I am not brave enough to risk the chance of bricking my watch by down loading third party apps. It's tempting though because there are some really cool watch faces that have been developed. Perhaps with the recent release of the SDK, we will begin to see more.

Also, sorry to hear you only get a couple of notifications. I have about 8 set up and they work fine. I am using an unjailbroken 4S iPhone, so maybe it has to do with the type of the phone but I am not sure.

      Anyway, best of luck.
