New Watchfaces, Colors and Help Portal

We posted a couple new watchfaces available to install on your Pebbles today. You can find them inside the Pebble App for Android and iOS (you may need to close the app and open it again to refresh). Let's just say we got quite a few requests for a digital watchface that actually told the time as well as date, so we're happy to get this one out :) These are early days in the Pebble watchface arena, and I'm pretty excited about where it's headed. Unfortunately I don't have anything new to announce about the Pebble Watchface SDK today, other than we're working on it and using it internally to write watchfaces.

Chinese New Year wrapped up at the beginning of the week, and our production line is back on-line. We're still not at full production speed yet as the various subvendors and factories that supply components to the Pebble assembly come back up after CNY. Also continuing to deal with delays (shenanigans?) as we ship plastic components from Taiwan to the factory in Dongguan, via Hong Kong.

As usual, you can track our production process at We've manufactured over 25,000 Pebbles so far (30% there!), with 8,000 currently flying from Hong Kong to our distribution centres right now.

Speaking of plastics, the factory has shifted one of our two lens tools back to working with colors (one tool will always be making black lenses, almost 24-7). We're 'shooting' (injecting) each color one at a time because each color of plastic requires a slightly different temperature, pressure and cycle time. Each individual color also needs to be approved through a process called First Article Inspection (FAI) during which all dimensions are double checked. We've found that the fit between the bottom housing and the lens can vary quite a lot depending on the injection parameters, so we're being very careful before approving the mass production parameters for each color.

Help and Technical Support

I'd like to personally apologize for anyone who has emailed us over the last 2 weeks. We have been swamped with questions and we have not done a good job at managing the overload, leading to a a bunch of unanswered messages. To help fix this, we now have 5 people dedicated to working with our backers. We're also working hard to improve our Support Center (

If you backed Pebble on Kickstarter, your questions (when is my Pebble shipping? Where are the longer straps? and more) may already be answered here:

Technical Support

If you have any questions about your Pebble, please consult the Tech Support FAQ:

We're tracking two major issues right now:

iOS Email - Email notifications are still not flowing correctly on iOS. With input from the survey in the last update, we've been able to target our efforts on a solution. We'll be testing it internally over the next few weeks.

Battery life - We're getting reports from some Pebblers seeing a 1-3 day battery life instead of 5-7. We're unable to replicate this issue on any of our Pebbles, but we're hoping to narrow down the problem with the help of our backers. We're working hard on this, and we're confident that we can get to the bottom of it

We're also tracking several other issues: Allow/Ignore prompt on iOS (working on it), Android music control (fixed in next release of Android app), Caller ID on iOS (thought we fixed it, but broke again, working on it).

On the Android side, we're pleased to see many developers begin using Pebble's Android Intent API (

Pebble Notifier brings dozens of new notifications and alerts to your Pebble, and integrates with Tasker.

Lightflow provides 'Total Notification Control' and integrates well with Pebble.

Great to see all those photos of Pebble in the wild, keep them coming! Thanks Pebblers,

Eric + Pebble Team

@Rick as a backer I don't really care about the competition LOL. @Alan, As far as I have read on the fora. The Pebble team does take these kind of problems seriously. And maybe their reaction isn't as quick as we would like it to be I don't worry that in the end these kind of malfunctions will be dealt with in a professional way. But it is my worst fear as well to get one of the Pebbles that "escaped" quality control. So hope you get sorted out soon.

yes it was from ebay. it was still sealed etc. The rip tear wasn't even off the box. ive sent an error report of to the folks along with pictures to see what they can do. You can still see the screen and everything else works just fine. I wouldn't say it was worth the wait but if they hit them out on the deadline it would have been a bargain. Now saddly with a screen issue less than 24 hrs after opening it would indicate that it was poorly made. Ps i have only complained about build once for this one issue so it can be a common thread in my rantings.

i dont believe i called them dumb. i did state it was terrible and silly how the treat backers ( lie etc.. all been proven by others... not me)

Its a common complain from many people . Not just me. but hey you think im from a competitor then feel free. i dont mind at all lol

Alan's story changes so often one can only assume he's been created by competitor as part of a FUD campaign. The only common thread to his rantings is how mean and dumb and thoughtless the folks behind Pebble are and how cheap and flimsy and poorly made Pebble is.

I am getting told I am a troll as I can not say a good thing about how they are treating backers with lack of info and updated if we had not backed them they would not have had 10 mil to work with. There would be no pre orders or even a pebble they should be giving us more info if we ask for it. Just think if you backed the lowest price about info how would you feel I backed 14/04/12 I chose red and large strap just incase. But I am still on step one. It's hard we been told they would be completed by the end of march this is not going to happen. We was told they would make and ship in order of backing again this did not happen SDK still not fully out.

Had the pebble on my wrist for less than 24 hours and the screen has got black blotches all over it.. I have emailed them but this thing is a farce.

    9. Paul Roodenburg on March 13, 2013

      @Evan Kramer,
Dear Evan. As a kickstarter backer, I would like the official communication by Pebble to run through the one channel that will automatically inform me and that is the Kickstarter page. Now they are using al kinds of social media on which I have to actively search if they have posted something new.

It is all about using a clear channel of communication. And for them using the kickstarter update as that tool would make a lot of sense. One update reaches all the backers....

And no I don't need them to confirm that that the Pebble has a certain promised feature. But they as a company have to be careful if the wrong stories get posted on the internet (by for example Ifixit which should have first contacted Pebble before posting their tear down to make sure they get all their facts straight.)

This is called a communication strategy and for a young newe firm it is of vital importance that they nail that communication strategy. They cannot afford unsubstantiated rumors that can potetnially harm their product.

A lot of people follow Ifixid, and the other before mentioned sites and take what is posted their as a holy grail.
So a lot of new would be customers might read the title of the post on 9 to 5 mac which states: "First Pebble teardown claims watch is unrepairable, lacks Bluetooth 4.0 support (Update: Pebble responds)" and may conclude :"Oh well it does not have BT4 support I'll let the pebble pass and take my chances with the next smart watch.

I hope you now understand my suggestion to the Pebble team. It is all about providing some insight into communication strategy and providing advice and there is no whining intended here.

    14. Paul Roodenburg on March 13, 2013

      Dear Team pebble,
Why don't you post information like the information about the BT LE support issue on the kickstarterpage which would lead to an automatic email to all of your backers.

Which in turn would ease communication and prevent a lot of anxiety, disbelief and outright animosity.

Kickstarter is the only forum through which you should always communicate with your Backers.

Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and the Pebble forum are second order communication means at the best.

@ Daniel Batchelor, my apologies the last link has the pebble info provided as well

    17. Paul Roodenburg on March 13, 2013

@Daniel Batchelor these are all just quoting ifixit.
Pebble explained the problem on Reddit.

The chipset is 2560A hardware with 2564 Firmware installed. This makes it BT4 LE capable. I

fixit clearly states that they found no hardware evidence for BT 4 LE support. If they would read the chipset and discover there is no 2564 Firmware installed then it would be proof that there is no BT4 support. For now I am wiling to believe Pebble.

    18. Paul Roodenburg on March 13, 2013

@Daniel Bachelor. Pebble has just posted on Reddit

That the chipset indeed supports BT4 LE protocols. The whole story can be read there.

I got my pledge in on the day it launched and I haven't heard a peep from anyone. You'd think if you pledged on the VERY FIRST DAY, you'd at least be notified that something was going on with your Pebble. The lack of information on this is disheartening.

For anybody in Canada, how long did it take for you to get your Pebble once it shipped? Mine shipped last thursday and CanadaPost still shows it as "Left country of origin and is en route to Canada", but it's been almost a week, so I'm a bit worried it might have gotten lost in the mail ( just my luck!)

    26. ozmars on March 13, 2013

Part of my frustration is that I feel like a dickhead for ordering this vapourware in the first place. I was excited to be part of something cutting edge and special. The wait until September would have been fine. I told my mates what I was doing and they laughed. "Geek", "nerd" they said. "Just go and get another watch. ". I laughed at them. Told them that I'd have the cutting edge device by Christmas. Forgot to say what year!

    29. Ken Jones on March 13, 2013

@Conal Just out of curiosity, since you're claimed backer date of May 18th seems to be causing some consternation among earlier backers who haven't yet received their address confirmation emails, are you certain that was the date you backed Pebble? It was the last day of the KS campaign (so the one when they'll have taken your money) but I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that your actual pledge date was much earlier.
You can check by going to and checking the date in the "Pledge" column. That will be the day you actually backed the project and will give a better indication of where Pebble are up to in the processing order, e.g. I pledged on May 6th for two colour Pebbles (one grey one red) and haven't had the address confirmation message yet - hard to say if that's just because they haven't reached orders for that date at all yet or if it's because of all the apparent holdups with colour production.

"we will post an update every 2 weeks"....

    36. Paul Roodenburg on March 12, 2013 has been updated: 38780 produced sofa. That is 4281 watches build since the last update. That is a wopping 713 watches a day. At this rate it will take another 64 days to build the remaining kickstarter watches. that would be May 15th. just short of a year since the closure of the kickstarted campaign. Take two weeks for shipping and delivery then the last watch should reach final destination 1th of June. The next update better contain really substantial answers.

For what ever it's worth at this point...I backed on May 1 for a grey Pebble. No word yet but I just received a black pebble I bought on ebay (I know, spent way too much but I was going to get a black one anyway). I love this thing and the best part is that this will only be the beginning. When (if) the SDK is released and new apps are written, this will only get better and it's pretty great out of the box.

    38. Missing avatar

Daniel Batchelor on March 12, 2013

@Alexis - I just don't see Pebble being acquired by another company. There's just nothing there that's proprietary technology, i.e. it's essentially off-the-shelf tech. As far as I can tell, there are no patents e.g. COOKOO Watch, MetaWatch, etc. are all essentially the same concept - notificaiton from a smartphone. Granted, IMO Pebble has the best concept out of the lot thus far.

My guess for an update is that we might be given another clue as to why things are so far behind, an actual schedule for color production, maybe positive news about component inventory constaints being resolved (a suspicion of mine, maybe Sharp). Long shots are starting a second production line or announcement of some infusion of cash, perhaps a venture-capitalists.

@Aaron, there has been something very fishy since the beginning about who & when folks get their Pebble. Just among the black Pebbles, it is clearly not in the order in which you backed the project. This is one of the many bald-faced lies coming out of the Pebble folks... Shameful...

Maybe the lack of updates and information is due to them being acquired. Eric said he is announcing something later this week, which is why he missed last Friday's update.
