Update #32

Manufacturing and Software Updates

Our production line is humming along, with the daily output creeping upwards to 1,500 Pebbles per day (PPD). Overall, it takes about 2 weeks for a single Pebble to be manufactured, assembled, boxed up and shipped to our distribution centers, so it took us a little while for the whole process to be ironed out.

There will be a one week interruption in output from the factory next week during Chinese New Year. We've taken steps to reduce the effect of CNY by stockpiling necessary components at our factory so that assembly can resume promptly after the holiday. In particular, to increase output before CNY, we've shifted some subassembly manufacturing to a facility in Taiwan for the most important assembly in the design, the optical adhesion of the LCD module to the lens. Building will be paused during CNY, but shipping will continue as we have a backlog of manufactured Pebbles to ship out.

Color Pebbles

As you can see in the graph above, we're on track to have manufactured 15,000 Black Pebbles before the beginning of Chinese New Year (Feb 8) (more data available on ispebbleshipping.com). After the holiday, production of other colours Pebbles will begin. In order to avoid delays, if you have a requested a Black Pebble as part of a multi-Pebble reward pack we will also be trying our best to fulfill that portion of the reward separately. We had to modify our shipping software to break down rewards into separate colors, so this hasn't started yet.

Software Updates

If you already have your Pebble on-wrist, keep your eyes peeled for updates to Pebble Android and iOS apps. As backers send us support requests and let us know about bugs and other problems, we will be publishing updates that fix issues you may be experiencing.

Software updates to the Pebble operating system (OS) itself will also be published regularly. The Pebble app on your smartphone will let you know when an update is available, and prompt you to install.

Known Issues

Pebble users have already reported several major issues that we're working to solve.

iOS email
When Pebble's Bluetooth connection with an iPhone or iPod touch is broken, the iOS software module that sends email notifications switches off. We've brought this issue up with Apple's developer support, but we can't expect a solution necessarily from this pathway. Currently, there is a workaround method to reenable email notifications (link) but it means toggling a switch after a disconnect. We are working to solve this problem (this is our #1 priority iOS task), and we'll keep Pebblers updated about this issue. To help us out, if you're an iOS Pebble user, please fill in this survey about your email usage.

Other issues that we're working to solve
- Email notifications from the default email app on HTC and some other Android devices are not being delivered to Pebble yet. On other default email apps (Samsung in particular) do not transmit email contents. Working on it.
- Some Pebbles are rebooting after receiving some notifications. If this happens to you regularly, use the Contact or Email support button inside the app to send us debug logs.
- iOS Caller ID. We've identified a bug that prevents a caller's name from appearing on Pebble. Will have a fix in the next iOS Pebble App version.
- Android two factor authentication - click here for instructions
- Watchfaces not loading on iOS. Fixed in the next version of the iOS app.
- Battery indicator: we're seeing reports of Pebble battery lasting from 2-7 days. It seems to be related to the variety of different Bluetooth connections on different phones. The first thing we're working on is improving the battery logging and how Pebble alerts you when the battery is almost empty. Then we'll move to improving battery life across the board.
- Android ROMs: we'll do our best, but unfortunately we cannot promise support for the entire wide world of Andriod ROMs out there. We're testing with stock devices from HTC, Samsung, Nexus (among others) and always on the stock OS.

- Pebble seems to interfere with Siri on iOS devices. Working on this problem.

Thanks for all your support, Pebblers! It's awesome to see the first users post pictures of their Pebbles in the wild. Keep the #PebbleTime coming!

I understand the early bird offer that's great they went in a day. So yep get them out. From the look of the replays all pebbles they have been made are black. Does that mean they may find a problem with the colour pebbles when they make them? If they do how long will it take to fix? No one has said if they had a large wrist strap how way it was to change. I know we will get them at some point but still can we have a video of you changing the straps to see how easy it is. As backers we made this project work should we not be told about possible buy out from apple? As the device could change and be better if they buy the company out and the pebble?

9 days! Try 11. Production to start back on the 17th. Last set of pebbles produced on the 6th. The end date to this just gets further away by the day.
Closer to 2 weeks interuption, now tell me they didnt know this was going to happen in advance, yet still make an announcement that it would be a week.

I just got my Pebble too! Not much to add to what Ritesh said; I backed on the 15th; it's black; it took two weeks to get it to the US, two days to get to NC from California, go USPS! Took me a few minutes to pair it, if you're on Android, just ignore whatever it says for a pairing number, Pebble doesn't care; and go to Settings -> Accessibility and turn on the options for Pebble, and all the settings in the Pebble app. Looking forward to the updates and SDK, and love it so far!

      To Daniel Batchelor:

Thank you for your very thoughtful analyses below. I think it is very fair to say that the experiences below will not only affect whether the backers of this project will ever back another Kickstarter project again, but whether others who learn of this experience will back another Kickstarter project. Not long after I backed the Pebble project, I backed the Lumi Project, and they were true to their word and shipped their product not long after they promised. That was a very good experience. But this project has had so many false expectations set (which led to the very large number of backers and the anger expressed in this forum) that I think it will have negative repercussions. Thank you for your post.

That's true, but what I can tell you is that they have a mailing list set up that you can join, which will let you know when there is any information about app development available. They have repeatedly said that SDK has been delayed a bit until they get shipping out under control.
You said earlier that their customer service was terrible, and yet you were looking for developer information. That is an entirely different complaint.
When there is anything to say about apps, I am sure they will announce it to the world, so everyone can develop/request apps. I bet they're more excited about the prospect than you are. Have patience!

Well since you don't have a watch yet, what else could it be for? Also, the support button in the app is to report problems with the app once you have a watch, so most likely that is why you do not see it anymore.
Regardless, there are any number of ways to reach the team if you wish to continue to harass them. Every time I have contacted them, either via email or twitter, they have responded within a few days--sometimes sooner!
They have been nothing but polite and responsive to me, which leads me to believe they have answered your inquiries already through some other means as I suggested earlier.
If you have not had a response yet, then that means there is no response to give at this time.

    23. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Thomas Shields on February 15, 2013

@alan Most likely, the reason no one has responded to you is because whatever you've asked/demanded of them has either been discussed ad nauseum in a kickstarter update, the forums, twitter, reddit, pinterest, etc.
The alternative is that whatever you've asked/demanded of them is unreasonable, and responding to you would be a waste of time. A cursory glance at your previous comments shows you backed a bit later, and should expect to receive your watch a bit later.
They are being made, and they are being shipped. I can't imagine what else you expect of them right now, but they are rather busy to reply to people who email them demanding to know where their watch is when any reasonable person who can read the updates would have no higher expectations then 'when it's my turn.'

      @simon
They have to keep a good amount. That should be obvious why. Say you get yours and it does not work. Do you want to wait 8+ weeks for everyone else to get theirs before they can make a replacement for you?
Or do you want to go into the returns pool and get one they hold for that in a week?
The latter is what you will hey :P

But the fact is the amount they say they are or could make in a day, the working days the total backers and the 6-8 weeks to ship them all at only two shipping lots a week.
The math just simply does not add up and they wont complete this until double those weeks.

There censoring everything. They don't have the production running. Why not ship what u have already made? It makes no sense not too

Actually it does make sense from a financial stand point. They trickle out watches to see if there is an underlying fault that could cause the recall (replacement) of thousands of watches. It is far cheaper to do it this way than to ship everything they have all over the world then have to pay double shipping themselves to replace them, instead of just unboxing everything onsite to rework it.

Not saying i agree with it but it is a common practice in mass production. Considering the PPM they have, following forum posts and Twitter, for them it is,t a bad idea.

I've been a Pebble cheerleader since day one, I've backed multiple Kickstarter projects, and I am excited to get my watch. I am, however, disappointed with a few aspects of the delivery. The delay until production? Doesn't bother me. The lower than anticipated rates of production, the slow shipping, the ambiguity regarding color and multipack orders, and the lack of an SDK as promised does disappoint me, though.

I'm sure the watch will be awesome. I'm sure the SDK will be awesome when it comes out. But as a backer (not someone who's done a project of this scale), I wish that things had gone differently.

Daniel Batchelor, I thought your post to Justin Steed was excellent. Neither Kickstarter nor Pebble could possibly have been prepared for what has happened. However, I hope neither fail.

Pebble should keep its nose to the grindstone and just deliver, telling the pre-orderers that they should cancel unless they are prepared to wait until at least June for the first pre-orders to be filled. Pebble's first obligation is to its KS backers and the great majority of us need to have the products on our wrists working as promised.

Kickstarter should put a maximum pledge limit on each project, maybe 5 times the minimum. More than that is more than a kickstart.

Backers who say this project has demonstrated strong demand for wearable tech are probably correct, but that would have happened anyway and the most it has done is advance things a bit. In the scheme of things, that is bugger all.

I don't think it is just the sheer number of units that has caused the estimated ship date in September to slip. I'd say the fact that substantial changes were made in the design specs of the device during the Kickstarter drive was actually the more important factor. The fact that that caused less than a 6 month delivery slip surprises me.

      @Justin Steed,
Really not the point of my post, but your response was anticipated.

I actually get the whys and hows of what's going on with Pebble and the delays. But I also understand the frustrations of some of the harsher posts here. Fortunately for Pebble, for every disgruntled backer, there's at least one backer who'll defend Pebble regardless wrong or right.

Unfortunately, as has been pointed out here numurous times, many of the backers of Pebble are first time backers and kickstarters, and consequently, last time backers. As has also been pointed out, most projects tend to slip on promised delivery dates, which in my mind is a problem with kickstarter as it's clearly (now) well known that most projects never hit their estimated ship dates. Here's something to ponder, if a project factored in a pessimistic ship date, would they have recieved as many backers? For example, if Pebble indicated they would be shippig in Feb. 2013, do you think they would have recieved $10M in backing? Also, in the case of Pebble, since the issue with meeting the "estimated delivery: Sept. 2012" was the sheer number of backers, should kickstarter require that a product has to limit the backing to a number that can realistically be accomplished by the estimated date?

Most backers, even the disgruntled ones, will forgive the delays once they have their Pebbles assuming they work as anticipated and Pebble will move on to either succeed or fail based on competition and their own merits. Kickstarter, on the other hand, lost a lot of potential future backers due to their experience with this project. People can point to the kickstarter terms and conditions and fault backers for not really understanding what they were getting into, and, as has been done numerous time here, belittle them as fools for not know, and say good riddens to them. But what these people need to understand is that, most people will not shell out cash for something that doesn't exist, and of those that were of the mind to, that number has been greatly reduced. It will be very interesting to see if any other project ever hits this kind of funding in the future.
