Update #32

Manufacturing and Software Updates

Our production line is humming along, with the daily output creeping upwards to 1,500 Pebbles per day (PPD). Overall, it takes about 2 weeks for a single Pebble to be manufactured, assembled, boxed up and shipped to our distribution centers, so it took us a little while for the whole process to be ironed out.

There will be a one week interruption in output from the factory next week during Chinese New Year. We've taken steps to reduce the effect of CNY by stockpiling necessary components at our factory so that assembly can resume promptly after the holiday. In particular, to increase output before CNY, we've shifted some subassembly manufacturing to a facility in Taiwan for the most important assembly in the design, the optical adhesion of the LCD module to the lens. Building will be paused during CNY, but shipping will continue as we have a backlog of manufactured Pebbles to ship out.

Color Pebbles

As you can see in the graph above, we're on track to have manufactured 15,000 Black Pebbles before the beginning of Chinese New Year (Feb 8) (more data available on After the holiday, production of other colours Pebbles will begin. In order to avoid delays, if you have a requested a Black Pebble as part of a multi-Pebble reward pack we will also be trying our best to fulfill that portion of the reward separately. We had to modify our shipping software to break down rewards into separate colors, so this hasn't started yet.

Software Updates

If you already have your Pebble on-wrist, keep your eyes peeled for updates to Pebble Android and iOS apps. As backers send us support requests and let us know about bugs and other problems, we will be publishing updates that fix issues you may be experiencing.

Software updates to the Pebble operating system (OS) itself will also be published regularly. The Pebble app on your smartphone will let you know when an update is available, and prompt you to install.

Known Issues

Pebble users have already reported several major issues that we're working to solve.

iOS email
When Pebble's Bluetooth connection with an iPhone or iPod touch is broken, the iOS software module that sends email notifications switches off. We've brought this issue up with Apple's developer support, but we can't expect a solution necessarily from this pathway. Currently, there is a workaround method to reenable email notifications (link) but it means toggling a switch after a disconnect. We are working to solve this problem (this is our #1 priority iOS task), and we'll keep Pebblers updated about this issue. To help us out, if you're an iOS Pebble user, please fill in this survey about your email usage.

Other issues that we're working to solve
- Email notifications from the default email app on HTC and some other Android devices are not being delivered to Pebble yet. On other default email apps (Samsung in particular) do not transmit email contents. Working on it.
- Some Pebbles are rebooting after receiving some notifications. If this happens to you regularly, use the Contact or Email support button inside the app to send us debug logs.
- iOS Caller ID. We've identified a bug that prevents a caller's name from appearing on Pebble. Will have a fix in the next iOS Pebble App version.
- Android two factor authentication - click here for instructions
- Watchfaces not loading on iOS. Fixed in the next version of the iOS app.
- Battery indicator: we're seeing reports of Pebble battery lasting from 2-7 days. It seems to be related to the variety of different Bluetooth connections on different phones. The first thing we're working on is improving the battery logging and how Pebble alerts you when the battery is almost empty. Then we'll move to improving battery life across the board.
- Android ROMs: we'll do our best, but unfortunately we cannot promise support for the entire wide world of Andriod ROMs out there. We're testing with stock devices from HTC, Samsung, Nexus (among others) and always on the stock OS.

- Pebble seems to interfere with Siri on iOS devices. Working on this problem.

Thanks for all your support, Pebblers! It's awesome to see the first users post pictures of their Pebbles in the wild. Keep the #PebbleTime coming!

I agree - and would hope that with an element of dual-running between Taiwan and China, the daily max of 2,400 units will be reached quickly, or even exceeded [i'm now going to wash my mouth out with soap!!].

Hopefully tomorrow will shed more light on things!!

@Mike, Pebble did mention that the Taiwan site were doing parts of the production process and we definatley seen an increase in thw production numbers on the run up to CNY, and the 1st day back.

The missing part of trying to make sense of the current production figures could be the work in progress figure. i.e How many Pebbles do they are almost or part finished ?

IMO part of the problem are the limited amount of jigs they have for the gluing process as this was one of the most time consuming parts. Hopefully if we see even part of the process being taken care of in Taiwan the 2,400 figures will be acheivable. I would hope Eric would share some of this with us all tomorrow.

I wonder if the factory in Taiwan will come on board so there are two sites of end to end manufacture? If they've shifted some processing during CNY, how much additional effort would it take to enable the site to process full manufacture?!

I got my pebble last Friday and I love it so far. I was concerned about the battery life but so far so good. My only disappointment is that those gps based apps used in the advertisement videos don't exist yet. I wanted the watch more for those kind of apps than for the notification and music ones.

@ William Stone - I dont think the current production figure is anything to celebrate. They are not making headway. Not yet anyway !!

@ Crispin- I like you will reserve judgement until after Update 33 (Which we will hopefully get tomorrow) but there is definately something we are not being told !

One thing to bear in mind is that Pebble continue to relay the message that all KS backer pebbles will be complete by Mid-Late March. We will see what the next update brings !!

"We didn't order a pebble we backed a company"....excuse you. Legally you are wrong, the moment pebble gave you an order confirmation showing what you are charged for, took the money as well as SHIPPING, it is an order .

    10. Missing_small

Creator Dr. Crippen on February 19, 2013

William Stone has mentioned a possible 20,000 more built by the end of February. Not sure how you've calculated this as they have built a little over 400 a day between 15 -18 February: this would lead to another 4,500 or less before the end of February. However tomorrow we are due another Update, so perhaps there will be some indications of the problems encountered in manufacturing that has led to this drop in production and consequent delays in supply, and hopefully some indication that this will ramp up again.
I'm still looking forward to receiving this, but one of the attractions was the timescale, knowing this would be far ahead of any competition (Apple included), something that is clearly no longer the case....

At 19,000 pebbles made, they are at just over 22% of the KS fulfillment. They are making headway each day to increase production. So, this is (I think) something to celebrate. At this rate of production, they will achieve roughly another 20,000 units of fulfillment by the end of February. THis will be almost half of the KS obligation. Not bad. If you backed on May 1 (as I did) we should all be in Pebbledom within another 6 weeks. I for one am already thinking of getting a second red pebble once the KS backers are fulfilled.

      Rock On!!

I am so sick of the people who keep telling us that we did not buy a pebble but backed a project. We gave people money expecting to get something in return, not with the "hope" that we would be getting it. And to the pebble team, maybe they should just communicate a little more with the people who backed you. If this is ANY indication of what your future customer support and relations is to be, then this will be the first and last pebble purchase for ALOT of people. You should understand that the frustration of waiting comes from your inability to talk to the backers on more regular basis. Stop taking a Apple approach to dealing with your backers/customers and HIRE SOMEONE to handle customer relations... YOU have millions, you can afford it , what you cant afford is to continue your HORRIBLE first impression as far as PR.

As mentioned before, we backed a project, we did not purchase the Pebbles, they are given as a reward. I really wish I had mine and am only agitated because I want it and am mildly patient. I doubt they will say what order the color batches will be because even if it makes the most logical sense, many people will be upset with their color being last or not first.

Another thing to take in consideration, they took in 10x the amount of money as their goal. Now lets say that means 10x the watches (it is probably more with multiple watch orders), how do you expect them to create so many watches within their time frame they gave? They would need 10x the production they sought. Yes it took longer to develop than they expected, they are also a start up. And often with start ups they miss some simple issues that might arise or make a small time frame that correlates with 100% efficiency. Even Disneyland had many problems when they first opened. Slightly different than what is going on here, but the point remains the same...

Matt, I'm glad that at least one other person here understands how the website works. Nobody has "purchased" a Pebble. They have backed the PROJECT. In that way, what we are all waiting for is a reward for helping back them. It takes a long time to make products for a first run. I'm ashamed to see so many people who are demanding answers about a reward that the Pebble team is taking it's time on to finish manufacturing!

Thanks for the update Pebble team.

Unfortunately I'm one of the Grey Pebble backers so I know I'll be waiting quite a while.

This is less of a complain but more an advisement to backers — I know that making "estimated delivery" claims that are far from your KS project launch date may deter some backers, but ultimately I think that whatever time you think you are going to deliver add on at least another 3 - 5 months to that estimate.

KS is not that old, and every one is new at this — both project creators and backers alike. But mental anchoring is why so many people are taking issue with delays.

At any rate. Good job so far Pebble team on the development on the product — after the KS project is over you guys can invest in a PR department, customer service dept., or a logistics team, etc.

      Eric Migicovsky

I understand how KS works and so far, I have tried to understand the decisions that you felt you had to make. What I don't understand is the following:

I and others ordered on April 11th as backers that loved your idea and had faith in you. When I went to give you my backer money, the $99 black watch was sold out. I decided then and there to get the red one (my favorite color). I then saw the pictures of the final colors and MANY backers made fun of the red color. You gave a choice to change, I chose not to.

On three different occasions, including on the day of announcement of your idea, you stated the first backers would get their shipments first. That was three times. Then your word meant crap as a business man, you changed it to the black ones. Ok, I didn't like it but fine, your word is worthless.

Now several, including I have asked:

When will the colored ones be manufactured and in what order of color do you expect to make them. You have not had the balls to give a straightforward answer.

I promise this to you. In every comment section that comes up when these watches are out to the public and people review them, I will state: Eric Migicovsky words mean crap as a business man. He cannot even give straightforward answers. He is vague when HE HAS TO SAY SOMETHING and ignores the rest when the media isn't the one asking. As a tech that works in the internet industry, this will stay with you for a good seven years.

I found this statement truthful to how you have been:

"Pebble ships “less than 500″ units

      ON JANUARY 23, 2013

Pebble, the smartwatch that raised a bunch of money on Kickstarter and then got delayed over and over again, is finally shipping! Oh, except it’s shipping “less than 500″ units (which is a weird way of announcing a shipment. Basically, Pebble is shipping insert-number-here units. Could be three. Could be 499! Who knows?) and the iOS app still isn’t in the App Store. So."
